Heroes Virtually Cancelled

Reported by Airlock Alpha aka SyFy Portal

Reports from NBC sources confirm that Heroes will NOT be picked up for a 5th season and the team will be told to think of an ending come May 2010...

Sources at NBC have told Airlock Alpha that the inevitable is finally happening: Networks executives will ask "Heroes" producers to wind the series down, possibly with an overall finale by May.

There isn't much happening with this show in terms of audience, and giving it a 'final chapter' feel is something the network is considering to help allow the show to go out with a bang," said the source,

Heroes" might not be the only one saying good-bye this season. With NBC looking for a firm finish in fourth place among all the networks once again, the new guard coming in is looking to really change things up, including possibly a completely revamped lineup that could include the reduction of hours devoted to "Jay Leno

If true then am not surprised that the worldwide ratings are enough for NBC to fork the bill out for a 5th season. I also agree with NBC about Jay Leno that they need to cut his hours infact I would scrap all 10pm until things pick up and move Jay Leno to sundays only between the end & beginning of NFL season.

I'm curious to see what exactly NBC thinks they can put on the air that would do any better. :rommie:

They'll have to axe almost their entire lineup.

Oh look, a contrary story! This is exciting, battling blogs. :D

Will the current season be the last of HEROES?

I’m told: not likely, but anything is possible. First they’ve already cut the costs down and numbers are trickling back up as long as the cheerleader might be gay. Throw in the fact that the Peacock currently has nothing on the air doing a whole lot better as far as dramas go and you’ve got your answer when you combine that with DVD Sales & oversea sales.
I'll leave the [blank] the cheerleader, save the show jokes to you wags. :p

The question is will that air on NBC or somewhere else? I just don’t see this series dying with the solid DVD sales it provides despite the show sucking. The costs are getting low enough for it to live on cable. Can it pull a 2.0 on Cable? Yeah? That’s a success for many networks.

Turn it over to the tender mercies of FX and amp up the lesbian sororoty mayhem!

^ Something cheaper.

Frankly the ratings weren't that good and the show costs a lot. Even Trauma wasn't doing horrible considering it should be cheaper.

Like Temis said they already canceled everything! The only dramas not canceled... yet... are L&Os, Chuck, and mERcy (I do that because they should have down an ER spinoff).

Nothing has been confirmed by NBC yet. Although I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be true.

"There isn't much happening with this show in terms of audience, and giving it a 'final chapter' feel is something the network is considering to help allow the show to go out with a bang," said the source, who asked not to be identified.

One thing to stress, however, is that no final decision has been made yet, and likely won't be made until closer to mid-season. The source was not even clear if a wrap-up directive had been issued to "Heroes" quite yet. If it hasn't, it will.

"I don't think this should surprise anybody," the source said. "The writing has been on the wall for some time.

However, none of this has been confirmed by NBC quite yet, and should be treated as any rumor would.

I'd imagine that NBC will at least try to move the show to another timeslot before making a final decision. If they cancel Heroes they might as well cancel everything else which is doing worse (nearly the entire NBC lineup). NBC might want to give Heroes a 13 episode season next year to wrap it up and give it a nearly 100 episode count first.

I will bet that within NBC is a power struggle due to the state of the peacock network and Heroes probably has two vocal groups each with different views. I guess it comes down to what the main guy in charge of NBC lineup come May 2010 thinks.

The only way I would pickup Heroes for a 5th is with a 11-13 episode run to air Sundays at 8pm or 9pm after the NFL football season finishes (that would be 2011). I would tell Kring to make it a series closure story and to make it like 1 with Heroes banding together to stop Sylar. I want a beefed up Peter/Sylar ending battle for the ages.

With the international success could a movie be possible ? the world market is there.

NBC needs to think outside the box...The network is a joke, atleast The CW knows it core audience.

NBC should focus on Sports, Shows with hot girls and Buddy cop comedies.

They show NFL already and a show with sport in it "FNL" does poorly in the ratings and I am lead to believe so called hot girls are in that plus other NBC shows. As for cop shows too many already and the buddy ones are already taken.

NBC could make the best show and no one would watch because they are suffering an image problem. They need to clean the house of current managment, get some decent PR in to make people pay attention to them and pray when that moment comes they are actually showing some good.

The duelling blogs are funny. Ultimately we won't know until, like, NBC actually makes an announcement rather than some guy sitting in his underwear by his computer. That said, if it is true, then I do hope NBC lets the show do a finale. And once again, a 4-year run cannot possibly be considered a failure anyway. How long did Star Trek TOS run, again?

As for Leno, again if the rumors are true cutting back the number of his shows is the smartest thing NBC can do. Leno has already indirectly killed one show (Southland) and who knows if the next Heroes never got a chance to see the light of day because they'd plugged up their schedule.

I've no objection to Leno having a show, but it should be a once-a-week thing. Or, if they really want to give him a big presence on the network, why not give him all of Saturday night to fill up, since no one bothers to make new shows for that night anymore...

What, like that Spanish show Sabado Gigantica? Where the host rune 3 hours of straight programming on Saturday? That would be crazy....

You can not blame Jay Leno for everything, he had nothing to do with Southland being canceled. It's not like NBC realized that they didn't have room for Southland, they just canceled it because they are cheap.

Well if they kill off half the cast that would be cheaper and easier to write for the monkeys in the writing pen.

I gave up on Heroes at the start of season 3 when I noticed it was season 1-3 rehashed and nothing was ever going to happen. All those heroes coming in, going out, no one being safe, etc. never happened. The series took the traditional route at the season 1 finale to bring Sylar, the perennial villian, back.

Sure, they introduce a new villian now and then, Sylar jumps sides but it doesn't ever change. It sticks to the same convoluted plot as it always did. That's why it's going to be cancelled. Who cares about a series where nothing changes? Whether it's official this season or not I seriously doubt it makes it much further.

I'll plant a flag right here right now saying Heroes will NOT be canceled. No matter how terrible the writing is (and I love Heroes, but the writing is bad). I have no evidence or proof just a gut feeling.

How do you define canceled?

They might not be "cancelled" (I like spelling it both ways) and NBC will give them 4 more episodes to end the show the way they want, but that's still canceled.

I think it would be awesome if the last thing we see in Heroes is NYC blowing up. :)

I think it would be awesome if the characters (and writing) showed any signs of consistency.

Heroes will go another season at least. Even the show continues to shrink, it is established and in place. NBC will hold that line.

So for the big final episode to end the series, Hiro and Ando will find their true calling as heroes by setting lab animals free in New Zealand, Noah will be able to help some troubled superpowered teen who doesn't get dragged to his death, and the ultimate fight between Peter and Sylar will be three punches instead of two.
