Help Choose the 100 Essential Trek Episodes!

Elemental

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Just to clarify, the 100 "essential" episodes are not necessarily the 100 best/favourite episodes. By "essential", I am asking for help finding the 100 episodes that would give a newbie the fullest possible experience of the Star Trek franchise. For the sake of argument, this list will only include the live-action series (no TAS).

Please feel free to submit your suggestions in whatever manner suits you. Don't feel you need to list 100 episodes by yourself but if there are a few real standouts that you want to make a case for, by all means, list them and your reasons. Or, if you consider yourself the expert of all things TOS, then perhaps you'd like to just list what you feel needs including from that list.

By my count, there are 704 hour-long episodes divided as follows:
TOS: 80
TNG: 178
DS9: 176
VOY: 172
ENT: 98

I think there should be just a few general rules to ensure proper representation:
-Each series should be represented roughly by their total proportion of episodes (this means about 11 TOS, 25 TNG, 25 DS9, 24 VOY, 14 ENT)
-Each series should have NO LESS than 10% of its episodes represented (this means no fewer than 8 TOS, 18 TNG, 18 DS9, 17 VOY, 10 ENT)
-Major/monumental episodes that greatly advance either plot or main character development should be included (this means including most series premieres/finales, many season premieres/finales, episodes containing main character introductions/deaths, episodes with developments which are pivotal to understanding most of what comes later)
-Each season should have at least one episode to represent

Proportionate by series? Let's see. I'll do this one series at a time. No way can I do this all in one sitting.

TOS
1. The Cage (fantasy vs reality)
2. Where No Man Has Gone Before (Gods)
3. The Enemy Within (inner conflict)
4. The Naked Time (surpressed emotions)
5. Balance of Terror (Romulans)
6. A Taste of Armageddon (avoiding war)
7. Space Seed (has man changed?)
8. Errand of Mercy (Klingons)
9. City on the Edge of Forever (time travel & emotional dilemma)
10. Amok Time (bond between main characters)
11. The Ultimate Computer (man vs machine)

I believe each of these emphasize different points for what the series is about, either first or best.

Thanks! Good list. I forgot to mention in my original post that I'm hoping each season can have at least one episode representing it... is there anything from season 3 you figure is as worthwhile and might replace something above? The Enterprise Incident perhaps?

Personally, I'm not as certain about #3 and 6. As far as essential episodes, I think Mirror, Mirror needs including. Other good shows are This Side of Paradise, The Trouble With Tribbles, Journey to Babel, and maybe even A Piece of the Action.

Granted, that's 115 more episodes than you were looking for, but I really think these episodes are essential to get a good overview of all five series.

TNG:
1. Encounter at Farpoint (humanity's progress)
2. Elementary, Dear Data (mind over matter)
3. A Matter of Honor (cultural exchange)
4. The Measure of a Man (is Data sentient?)
5. Q Who? (what's really out there, how safe is it?)
6. Who Watches the Watchers? (technology doesn't equal Godhood)
7. The Defector (hoping for unlikely peace between the Federation and Romulans)
8. The Offpsring (raising artificial life)
9. Sins of the Father (corruption among the supposedly honorable Klingons)
10. The Best of Both Worlds, Part I (the overwhelming threat of the Borg)
11. The Best of Both Worlds, Part II (see above)
12. Family (personal lives of the characters, aftermath of BOBW)
13. Reunion (sequel to "Sins of the Father", cultural conflict within Worf)
14. The Wounded (Cardassians, feelings after a long war)
15. First Contact (cultures emerging into the interstellar community)
16. Redemption, Part I (continues from "Reunion")
17. Redemption, Part II (see above)
18. Darmok (working together despite language barriers)
19. Ensign Ro (Bajorans, a third-party world ravaged by a former enemy)
20. The First Duty (duty vs loyalty)
21. I, Borg (recognizing individuality)
22. The Inner Light (a life that could've been lived)
23. Tapestry (how choices in life make you who you are)
24. Rightful Heir (spiritual legacy and the return of a Christ-like figure such as Kahless)
25. Preemptive Strike (the dilemma of choosing a difficult turn in life)

These are based on a combination the strongest and most prominent themes and important storylines.

Wow, thanks! I tried doing this sort of thing once before and aimed for 200-250 shows but wondered if I could get away with less although I think it will be hard.

Just from a quick glance, I think Skin of Evil needs to be included and could maybe pull Conspiracy (although it is a good show). And I don't think that Spock's Brain needs to be included... :p

Starting with TOS, the Essential Eleven:

The Naked Time
The Menagerie Pt I and II
Balance of Terror
Space Seed
City on the Edge of Forever
Amok Time
Mirror, Mirror
The Doomsday Machine
Journey to Babel
The Trouble with Tribbles
The Gamesters of Triskelion
...yes, it's the stinker of the pack, but it's got disembodied brains in glowing orbs, thrall collars, quatloo-based sports betting and green-haired alien chicks in silver lame for Kirk to romance, so how can we leave it out? It's the one episode in all of Star Trek that I'd show a newbie, for sheer recognition factor. And it doesn't set too high of an initial standard.

I'll skip TNG, not an expert by any means. The Trusty Twenty-Five of DS9 tomorrow.

I think it does. The genuine drama and the absolute cheese of TOS go hand-in-hand with one-another. And if "The City on the Edge of Forever," an episode that highlights the legitimate drama, is on the list, than so too must "Spock's Brain," an episode that highlights cheese; elsewise, you won't have gotten a comprehensive overview of the series.

"Essential" does not mean "Good." It means, "Important to understanding the series."

The Enemy Within not only delves into what important traits are needed to function as captain, it represents the first time we see Kirk having to make a decision while being given input from Spock one way and McCoy another way. That's integral to the fabric of what the series is.

A Taste of Armageddon is one of the most effective anti-war episodes in TOS and there is a brilliant speech from Kirk at the end about fighting the natural predatory instincts within our species to kill. Deciding to take a civilized approach when someone less thoughtful would rely on more primitive and primal instincts.

A third season episode? I'll think of something that wasn't introduced in the first two or done better.

EDIT: I'll do this tomorrow.

Thanks, I don't know how I missed "The Menagerie"...

Replace "Balance of Terror" on my list with "The Enterprise Incident". It still draws comparisons between the Romulans and Vulcans but also involves Spock more personally.

Looks like I'm over an hour-and-a-half ahead of tomorrow.

TNG:
1. Encounter at Farpoint (humanity's progress)
2. Elementary, Dear Data (mind over matter)

These are based on a combination the strongest and most prominent themes and important storylines.
I very much enjoy the mostly theme-based approach you're using to select the episodes. I've been tending to look at things more from a plot and character point of view, but it's important to realize that Star Trek has always been about the themes. Especially TOS and TNG.

I'll have a crack at choosing my personal favourites from Enterprise:

In no particular order, just as they occur to me:
1/2. Broken Bow
3. The Expanse
4. Damage
5/6. Demons / Terra Prime
7. The Andorian Incident
8. Silent Enemy
9. Shuttlepod One
10. Home
11. Regeneration (I know that one's going to be controversial!)
12. Horizon (or Fortunate Son - purely because it shows life outside Starfleet)
13. Kir'Shara
14. Minefield

Some of them I've chosen just because they're our 'first' exposure to well known races, others because it explores the human condition specifically or has a major character change/development.

And Regeneration because I thought it was a good episode (a couple of flaws admittedly), and it links back in with TNG, VOY and First Contact.

I haven't slacked off on the rest of my list. I'll get around to DS9 and VOY soon.

As for ENT, um, I never really watched it, so whatever jongredic said. :p

Thanks a lot for the replies guys! I know I kind of let this die but now that I've got some good input (and spare time), I think what I'm going to do is make a poll question out of each series including all the episodes you all "nominated" and see what the majority consensus is for each series. I'll post links to those threads once they're up. If you have any last minute additions, get them in now!

Unfortunately, I've already made the polls for those series... Most of what you included is in there but a few are not. When you vote in that thread, please post and make a case for any episodes you really feel should be included in the essential 100 but aren't there to choose from.
