I thought all the Doctor did was make it compatible with humans?

He made the memory wiper "compatible with humans".

I thought he specifically asked for a human compatible one to be brought into the extraction chamber..

It's possible he didn't fiddle with it himself, but the "human compatible" line was about this device, rather than the Mire medical chip.

No he didn't fiddle with the neural block device, he just asked for a human compatible one. It was Clara that fiddled with it trying to be clever one last time.. She didn't want her memories wiped..

I think The Wormhole believed the Mire device was made human compatible by the Doctor instead of modified to keep fixing Ashildr forever.
It was.

"Battlefield medical kit. I've reprogrammed it for human beings."

Indeed. And since "reprogramming it for human beings" is the only modification the Doctor spoke of, it stands to reason it operates in the same manner it would for the Mire, so the question of why the Mire aren't the dominant race in the universe, or at least more of a power than they seem to be still stands.

I'm not sure of that, because when he and Clara talked about what he'd done as they returned to the TARDIS he didn't seem completely sure it would even do what he thought. It's at least possible it might have had a more robust effect on human physiology than Mire.

But even if so, it was only death by senescence and reparable injury that it prevented; grave injury would still cause death. The Mire seemed to battle everyone and didn't seem to be quite as good at it as they liked to think, so it would make sense that eventually they'd die out thanks to this warlike nature.

Well, regardless given all the Doctor did was reprogram it for humans, it should still have worn out eventually. Maybe it could keep Ashildr alive longer than a typical human lifespan, say several hundred years. But over 100 trillion years? And how did she overcome the psychological issues that resulted in everyone else becoming either Future Kind or Toclafane?

Well as it was it was a piece of kit that was external to the Mire helmet, whereas once he'd reprogrammed it it was actually absorbed by Ashildr. I think he did more than just reprogram it for humans, or at least you can easily assume he did.

I do agree with you that it keeping her alive until the end of the universe is something of a stretch given even Jack didn't last that long.

Well finally gotten around to watching the last few episodes of this season. I'm still not sure how I feel about the finalé. I want to like it but something prevents me, it's not a bad episode but I feel it's just lacking something or something is off slightly. Perhaps it's just how the make Clara's death seem cheap and cheat it.

Well, she's superb at everything. Maybe, once she got used to immortality, she began upgrading and maintaining her own chip.

I agree. Also, I thought it was funny when Ashildr said that some of the other immortals didn't make it. The immortals died?! I guess they didn't know the meaning of the word! Inconceivable!

Series 9 Grading and Discussion Thread

Will there be a thread now for discussing this series on the whole, or are we waiting until after the Christmas special?

If you think being "immortal" necessarily means one can never be destroyed under any circumstances, you must have missed (among other things) Highlander and, like, every vampire story ever!

And they never engaged in a deal with a sicillian :D

(I think I messed up that quote)

Moffat just can't seem to kill some characters and it's highly unnlikely IMO that we'll see Ashildr and Clara again since both actors are on other shows.

I always find these questions rather strange, like when a review thread hasn't been created and people ask if there will be one and not make one themself.
