Heading to Philadelphia...

I thought that was a pretty cool place when I was there as a teen. I didn't have much money at the time, but being able to buy some uncirculated coins at the end of the tour was kind of neat too.

I miss a lot of the food there. Italian hoagies - I like mine with oil, no more than that.......yep that's good. Then a mix of hot and sweet peppers. I love cheesesteaks. And don't forget to sample some Tastykakes while you're there!!

Anyone who gets a hoagie with mayo on it should stay away. Hell, I go to Subway and ask for oil, and have been frustrated that many of the Ontario stores don't carry it anymore. They want to put sub sauce on it. Blech.

In the end, even the rolls aren't the same. If I ever find a vendor from which I can get Amaroso rolls up here, I'll shave my own beef to make a cheesesteak.

I know that I'm going back to Toronto on Monday with a suitcase filled with TastyKakes and Goldenberg's Peanut Chews. :shifty:

My mom read an article in the Inquirer that the reason the rolls are impossible to make anywhere else is because of the uniquely terrible Philly water they use to make it! So the "Surekill" has some benefits, after all!

It's so weird to see two Philadelphia transplants in Canada (Middle Earther, I used to be from Havertown, btw). If I ever head up to Canada, I'll bring some some kandy kakes and amarosso rolls (They don't stay fresh for very long, though, so no promises about their quality).

I will confess I'm guilty of putting mayo on hoagies, but I'll acknowledge it's not a true hoagie, I just happen to like mayo (and I won't put it on Italian hoagies, just turkey).

Go to the Franklin institute, independence hall and check out the Comcast building. Appearently the lobby is something to see. You can also see the mint and the whole historic section. If you are into music and other off-beat type things there is South Street.
You may want to also check out Penn's landing. I did a lot of that when I was at Children's Hospital for Children at UPenn when I last had my open heart surgery in 2002.

I married a Canadian; that's how I ended up here. (Love the health care, btw! ;))

You shook me a little with the mayo thing, but I guess turkey's OK. I just can't imagine mayo on an Italian, though..

I love butterscotch krimpets the most, though. (Thought I'd put in my order!)

I grew up in Delaware County, just outside of Philly.
I'm from Delco, too!

Longwood Gardens is a bit of a drive - maybe 45 minutes southwest of the city - but it's a gorgeous garden and one can easily spend a good part of a day there. Also there's Valley Forge National Park.

Oh, a Krimpet, a Krimpet....my kingdom for a Krimpet.

In my case I married a Canadian resident, too, though she wasn't a citizen at the time. Agreed on the healthcare.

Grew up in Horsham (MontCo), myself.

And at this moment I am VERY frustrated because the weather cancelled my flight home! Since this means I'll miss the funeral that was the reason for my trip I'm no longer travelling down for the weekend, and my dreams of a stash of TastyKakes and Peanut Chews will have to wait a while longer. :scream:

The Philly Zoo is relatively large and pretty good. There's also the Camden Aquarium (it's on the other side of the river of Philly I believe), I haven't been there lately but I think they added manatees or something in the past few years.

The Philly Zoo is the oldest zoo in the United States. A pretty good one overall (although I think the price is getting higher).

I haven't been to the Camden Aquarium in probably 10 years, unfortunately.

I do love the zoo, although I was disappointed the last time I was there and I saw that they got rid of the monorail. I loved that! They did have a big hot air balloon you could go up and down in, though.

I was in Philly last weekend and the Star Trek exhibit was still up and running at the Franklin Institute (so, naturally, I spent about three hours in it). I even took pictures, though I was instructed not to do so.
