Heading to Philadelphia...

Thespeckledkiwi

Vice Admiral
It was Philly or Nashville (again) but Philly won out since my friend is opening up an art gallery there. So what should I see in Philly while I'm there?

They have this bell with a big crack in it, people like to take pictures of it.

Cheesesteaks

The Rocky Statue is at the bottom of the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, so see that, then run up the steps like every other tourist does.

And well, that's about all Philly has.

I think first I'd have to know what interests you. Philadelphia is fairly diverse, so I don't want to recommend something and find out it's not something you're a fan of.

For example, it's famous for its history, so I could recommend all the cool history stuff, but, if you have no interest in history, I won't.

EDIT: The Rocky Statue is still there, it's just not on top of the stairs at the Art Museum, but to the side of them (it does give the impression that the museum is ashamed of it, but it's still there for tourists. And you can run up the stairs yourself and take your own picture).

Ya, I went back and edited, remembering they stuck it at the bottom.

It's so Iconic, they should have kept it up there.

Going to a lot of art museums. I'm a major in history, so I can't wait to visit.

Liberty Bell ;) Awesome.

If you don't come back and post a picture of yourself next to Rocky I will be very upset with you.

I am not really...camera friendly. :p

But we'll see.

Philadelphia Art Museum is a must in that case. Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are good places to visit, but I'm pretty sure they require tickets in advance. If you have an interest in American history around the Revolution there's way too many places to name. Elfreth's Alley, Independence Hall, Ben Franklin's House, Betsy Ross's house are a few places. I think there's also going to be a Revolutionary War museum because sticking it in Valley Forge was too controversial and Philadelphia didn't have enough revolution stuff.

You could also do one of those historical ghost tours or duck boat thingies (get driven around and then get dropped in the Schuykill river or maybe the Delaware river, I have no idea). It's a different way to see historical sites, I guess.

Depending on how quickly you get to Philly, the Franklin Institute might still have the Star Trek exhibit here. If not, it's still a pretty cool science museum.

Oh, and there's the new Constitution center, but it's kinda hard to take the writing of a document and turn it into museum form (it's a very modern museum, though).

You could also go see City Hall and stop by LOVE Park real quick (nothing major, but still cool looking. Philly has lots of interesting public art and LOVE Park might be the most famous).

Franklin Institute! The history and cultural stuff around Philly is fantastic, wonderful stuff. But if I was gonna pick one thing that's not the standard history/cultural stuff, it'd absolutely be the Franklin Institute. :bolian:

Plus, you get to walk inside a giant human heart.

OK, maybe grown people don't do that, I'm not sure.

They've rebranded it to just calling it The Franklin, nowadays. It really is a great place, as is the Museum of Natural History.

I have to say, when I was home last year I LOVED the Constitution Center. Thought that was a great experience, and had my picture taken with the statue of John Langdon, signer for New Hampshire, because I am related to him.

But we'll see.

That statue has magical powers. It turns anyone who stands near it into a champ!

One of my favorite avs, from the unveiling of the statue:

Okay, if you're going to Philly, and like fucked up stuff, you have to go to the Mütter Museum. It's not very big, so it won't occupy too much of your time, but you'll also never forget it in a :wtf: kind of way.

I'm not a Phillies fan but I would take in a few games at Citizens Bank Park anyway. I hear it's a nice place.

And while you're at it, go piss all over Lincoln Financial Field. Dogs will love you for it.

I grew up in Delaware County, just outside of Philly. I envy you, since there is (I believe) there is a Star Trek exhibit at the Franklin Institute now.

I also once took a walking tour of historical Philadelphia with my wife. I believe we got the free guide from...Mellon Bank? I think. It's worth doing. We saw some things that I never knew about before and ended up at the Liberty Bell. It was a fun day.

I miss a lot of the food there. Italian hoagies - I like mine with oil, no more than that.......yep that's good. Then a mix of hot and sweet peppers. I love cheesesteaks. And don't forget to sample some Tastykakes while you're there!!
