He shaped TNG as well. RIP

"A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory."

Leonard Nimoy

Leonard Nimoy did, in fact, encourage and support tying-in TOS and TNG together. He wanted more than just a transition between the two; he wanted them to be part of a whole. On my TUC Bonus Features, there is an interview with Nimoy, where he expresses that. What exactly his intentions were are unclear, but he might've been thinking about crossover opportunities, or maybe he was thinking about just the one-off with Unification and was trying to put a good face on it. I just don't know. But the Data character was obviously in the mould of Mister Spock, in a lot of ways, and Spock's father was even a part of the legacy. The episode "Sarek" is one of my favourites and that it ties into Unification so well, with that great payoff where Picard let's Spock touch his memory of Sarek's mindmeld with him was very touching, indeed. Unification has its problems, to be sure, but it also had its many pleasures. And having Leonard Nimoy guest starring in TNG is not the least of them ...

For once, I can wholeheartedly agree with a 2takes post ;)

"Unification", in concert with "Sarek", was an incredible part of TNG - unforgettable, really.

I'm not even being flippant or cute when I say I'm still grieving. I'm not sure how long it will take to shake off the mourning process. A few days, I guess.

The hurt, the missed opportunities of cross-overs--the loss of talent--that will never leave us. But we can get through it.

As with any great loss, we never leave it behind, or overcome it, or pass it by. We cope, learning to function as before, adapting to the presence of the loss so it does not negatively affect our ability to continue.

The learning process is the difficult part. And it will take some time. Kirk's log entry at the beginning of SFS comes to mind. :(

I just wish they had a better story for Nimoy to be involved in. While "Unification" isn't exactly terrible, it isn't exactly good either. If not for Nimoy, I don't think it would be remembered even as a mediocre episode that many fans see it as.

Nimoy's presence showed just how terrible an actor Denise Crosby was. I still don't know what they were thinking using her in it.

I know Unification gets a lot of stick sometimes, but for me it's completely worth it for Spock finally touching his father's thoughts, albeit through Picard. Nimoy sells the moment so well. That burst of uncontrolled emotion on his face says everything.

We'll miss you Leonard. Thank you.

and thank you, Tosk

These posts are most excellent, and go a long way to help with my process... :sigh:

I'm sorry for what you're going through HIjol. As I recall, you lost your father over the Holidays. Hopefully, your grieving process will not be a protracted one, because Life is still calling you - and you've got to live it to the limit. All the best!

I watched Unification last night and while it's not my favorite two parter, I loved Spock in it, especially the Sarek scene and the scene that was posted with Spock and Data. It is a shame Reunification was never realized in Trek, unless it was finally dealt with in the novels.
