There were many problems with the 87 film the foremost probably being that it took place mostly on Earth. IMO Frank Langella's performance as Skeletor saves this film from being a total piece of crap. He's brilliant and from watching interviews with him in the past...he enjoyed doing the role and has never regretted it.
^ Skeletor's speech when he becomes a "god" is classic. It still gives me goosebumps watching it.
Agreed. I think all the parts on Eternia were fantastic. It was only once things switched to Earth that even my young, optimistic brain went "WTF?!". Skeletor was done perfectly, as was Evil-Lynn IMO.
A new film should be set completely on Eternia, no Earth crap (unless you want to use it briefly when talking about Queen Marlena). I want my Battle Cat dammit!
Could not agree more. I want Battle Cat, Orco (not some Hobbit wannabe), Man at Arms, and Teela. I would also love Prince Adam and He-Man to be played by different people.
And I think the second and third installments (come on, trilogy!) should be an epic story about He-Man reuniting with his twin sister as they fight Hordak. "Secret of the Sword," anyone?
The one thing that I wished would have been kept in was a deleted scene where they find an old NASA patch dated 2030 or something like that and it was supposed to tie in with Marlena's origin. Yeah I first watched the MOTU movie with my brother and we were both WTF when they suddenly shift the story to Earth.
He says the same thing 15 different ways and doesn't shut up for about five minutes. Even Dolph looks like he's saying "Get the fuck on with it!" under his breath. I'll admit he stretched every bit of acting credibility possible from that terrible dialogue, but the entire scene is just as shitty as the rest of the movie.
LOL - if somebody hasn't written up a spoof based around that yet they really need to.
I'm hoping that they deal with Skeletor's origin as Keldor in any upcoming movie.

It could be done very well. A scifi and fantasy "sword and sorcery" film all mushed into one. With the right cast, it can overcome its more cheese filled origins (or embrace them whole heartedly).
I do miss the early 2000's series. Like the current "Thundercats" it was a great example of how to redo a whole new series based on a classic property.

I read the much lauded Justin Marks draft and it was pretty decent but not as great as reviewers of the time were praising. I also read a draft of a treatment done a couple years ago and it wasn't great. They're getting there but still far off from being what the majority of fans would want to see in a film.
One has to wonder if the success of Thor had anything to do with keeping this project going.
I know if I was in a meeting I'd point to it as an example.
I'm sure "Thor" had a lot to do with it, combined with the fact that Mattel's MOTU Classics line is selling like hotcakes. As a major MOTU fan myself I can say that most of us are concerned that if it is finally made that it doesn't resemble the original 87 movie or this summer's "Conan: The Barbarian". We want to be a box office success.
Ugh, I hope they don't get the great idea to have He-Man come to Earth...again.
None of the drafts had anything to do with Earth and most of them were origin stories.
