HBO's "Westworld", starring Anthony Hopkins/produced by J.J. Abrams

I got a serious Truman Show vibe at some point in the show, and then a Hannibal vibe at another.
I'm still confused.
But entertained.

A graphical Westworld timeline I've found:

So. That was the end of season one. I can't help feeling a bit let down.

All that philosophizing about consciousness and awakening and free will, and it ends in a head shot, a massacre, and an uprising-- composed mostly of non-awakened robots.

Ah, well. We got some revelations. Ford fought Arnold and won. Then realized he was wrong, and sought to carry on Arnold's work. That was a nice twist. And The Man In Black was confirmed to be William. Not much of a surprise. And Maeve's independence and free will had been programmed into her-- which means she had no real independence and free will. Or did she? Maybe independence and free will are something that's programmed into all of us-- or at least those of us who have it. And she did go back for the child. See, isn't all that more interesting than a head shot?

At least Bernard was resurrected. As was Clementine, apparently. I would have preferred if he had circumvented Ford's orders, but at least he's alive.

And... Samurai World? Maybe there's also Roman World and Medieval World.

Anyway, it was a great run. I won't let the mediocre ending turn me off of season two.

I hadn't noticed this myself (it was pointed out in the comments of the Vox review), but did anyone else see the post-credits scene? It features Armistice and her fate with the door trapped on her arm.
I did, although I was not sure of the point. Unless they just threw in a deleted scene for the heck of it.

Just a techie note - Delores fired a quite a few more than six shots from her six shooter at the end. :)

Even the guns were rebelling against their limitations. Maybe those wacky selective Westworld bullets can fire more than once to give guests the feeling of being in a Hollywood movie where they don't need to reload.

But yeah, I noticed as well, I don't usually notice much with continuity but I can't seem to help counting bullets sometimes. The best/worst I've noticed is Bond firing like 37 times in one movie and in T2 Arnies uses exactly as many grenades as are on his bandolier.

That said, I didn't notice other than it being over six, but I think some revolvers do have an 8 bullet capacity so maybe it could still work.

Some do, but the good ol' 1873 Colt Single Action Army she used holds only six.
But it's not the first time that's happened in a film or show.

It was the weapon Arnold originally had Dolores use to massacre all the hosts pre-park-open. It's not hard for me to believe that he would have chosen from a personal arsenal of futuristic administrator guns that just look like 19th century weapons. There's probably even a hidden button for mini-laser-guided missiles.

The possibilities for future seasons are endless, Cowboys vs. Samurai, Cowboys vs. Knights, Cowboys vs. Alie... ok, perhaps not.

Samurai World!
Ok that was a cool and unexpected reveal, though in hindsight as said above how the hell would that work?
On the subject of Hosts killing humans, how come Teddy was able to disable MiB this time when his bullets hadn't even slowed him down in episode 1?

Anyway, that was an interesting end to the season. I was slightly disappointed, but only slightly. The "Ah this was my hugely contrived scheme all along" falls apart if you give it any major thought. How could Ford predict everything that would happen? Just taking Maeve into account there are so many variables. How could you be sure Felix would be so supportive, or that his mate wouldn't blab all?

Ford's characterisation is a little all over the place in terms of his feelings and actions, and it is a bit depressing that the only way the Hosts can achieve sentience if through strife, and now the only way they can be free is through violence. I appreciate that's how it often is for humanity but if the Hosts are supposed to be something better then it's a depressing start for them.

So MiB was William, but that's been pretty obvious for a few episodes now, I held out for a while but there was no way it couldn't be. What exactly happened to Logan then? I'm disappointed, if only because it negates most of William's character who was decent and noble, basically until a girl was mean to him. I did like Ed Harris' smile at the end, so will season 2 be some kind of reversal? A dwindling band of humans battling an ever powerful Host army as the outside world wonder what to do?

Best bits both involved Maeve and Felix. First when he got paranoid he was a Host, then when she told him he was a terrible human but that was a compliment. So when she went back, was that part of her narrative or was that a genuine choice? The gun battle with Hector and Armistice was fun, now sure about the arm hacking bit!

What happened to Stubbs still seems a bit off, so I agree with others, there seemed no point to that bit.

All in all a very good first season, it's far too clever (or thinks it is) for its own good sometimes but one of the best things on telly and I can't wait for S2

One final bit, and I might be seeing (hearing) something that isn't there, but has anyone else detected a hint of the Boot Hill computer game music in the soundtrack? (sure it's a genuine tune that was just used in the computer game but given it's a western game...)

Stubbs suspected something was off with Bernard(Since he showed no remorse for Teresa being dead) and with Fords plan so close to completion he had to be eliminated before he could dig into it further.

It's TV. Unless you actually see the corpse the character isn't dead, unless the actor demands too much money during contract negotiations.
