Spoilers Hawkeye -Discussion Thread

I love how the MCU is slowly laying the groundwork for the next version of the Avengers - so far we most likely have Yelena, Shang Chi and then it's Kate Bishop and i wonder who will be next. Marvel is staying true to their formula to build up characters slowly so when the big movie comes they don't need to waste time with character introductions.

We've got She-Hulk coming up, and she has a pretty extensive history with the Avengers in the comics.

In terms of her backstory, she started as an enforcer for the Kingpin. An encounter with Matt Murdock and then Daredevil (whom she didn't know was Matt) changed that and turned her around.

I read an article Marvel posted on their website that went through comics history, and now I'm curious if they go that route, who will play the Kingpin role? Unless they actually bring back Vincent D'Onofro, which would be amazing.

What if she's the Cosmic Madonna?

Mantis raised and trained at a Kung Fu Kree Temple?

Clint is going to freak when he sees the Swordsman.

Does that put the Mandarin back in play?

I can't really see them taking this in that direction, that would be a better fit for the Guardians of the Galaxy at this point, since that is by far the most cosmic MCU series right now.

The first two episodes were good. I'm never entirely sold by Renner, I've really enjoyed him in somethings and found him very drab in others, but he's really good value here, as for Kate, that's really the little girl from True Grit isn't it!

Stepdad is way too obviously evil, not saying he isn't evil but I doubt he's behind everything!

So are we figuring the idea is for Renner to step down as Hawkeye and for Kate to become the new Hawkeye?

Oh and I'm calling it now, that dog is more than it seems. Can Skrulls disguise themselves as animals? Who do we know with one eye? Nick Fury, Thor...Odin?

I believe the first Skrull storyline ended with them being permanently turned into cows.

She is replaced with a vegetable in the comics.

So is the Swordsman.

But they probably still do it like mammals do it on the discovery channel.

Rather he has to collect pollen from elsewhere to germinate in her budding flowers.

Nerys is correct, you're thinking of Cosmo, the Soviet Space Dog. Who has already appeared in the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy, though not yet with the love and attention the truly awesome character deserves.

This dog is Pizza Dog, proper name Lucky, and was introduced by Matt Fraction. He appeared in the same story that introduced the Tracksuit Mafia. As far as I know he has only ever appeared in Hawkeye comics, of both the Clint and Kate persuasion. (Every time I type that, I think it was mistake not to make her Cate. But maybe that's too on the nose?)

I've watched the first two episodes... I'm finding it a lot more entertaining than i thought it would be, which is fun. But I must be the only person who doesn't like Hailee Steinfeld as Kate. I really find her to be grating and I can't look at her and think, this is a character. She always just seems like Hailee Steinfeld playing Hailee Steinfeld to me. But I'm clearly in the minority on that one!

I mentioned I had some minor continuity issues with the Battle of New York sequence, but the dedication shown to continuity in this sequence more than makes up for any minor issue I may have had. This right here is awesome. The two sequences even slo-mo at the same time.

As a swordsman I just want to say, we aren't all bad guys.

The first Avengers movie is becoming a bit of a Nexus point for other marvels shows and movies, it's cropped up in Spiderman Homecoming, Endgame and now Hawkeye.

It was also the Nexus point for Agents of SHIELD and responsible for the low property values in Hell's Kitchen in Daredevil.

Hawkeye has always been one of my favorites in the MCU - a baseline human with insane skills and experience, just oozing coolness from every pore.

Renner delivers that aura with ease, and his being more grounded (referring to personality) than 98% of the MCU characters is a plus.

You're forgetting major players such as Captain America and Bucky (regarding Barnes, I believe it was either Sharon or Zemo who referred to Bucky as an Avenger).

Really enjoying this series. The first two eps. were both 10s.

I really like how they are being faithful to the character's individual motivations and nothing feels forced in a 'because it has to happen for the story to progress' kind of way that we sometimes see with these types of stories. The whole LARP bit in Ep. 2 was hilarious, but made in universe sense as I liked the line of - "We're a lot of RL Firemen and Cops, so if you try to break the rules..." - plus I loved the guy with the suit saying "Hey, just let me kill you and I'll give you the suit..." - and he did, no muss or ridiculous ulterior motive; Hawkeye played along and the guy with the suit kept his word.

All very organic with (IMO) the right mix of seriousness and humor that just makes the whole thing fun to watch; and no real 'idiot ball' tossing or other overused tropes so far.

Is the "issue" that he was out of arrows, then had a grappler arrow?


These first two episodes were really really good stuff. All 5 shows so far have had their own identity and have really nailed it for me. But suddenly six episodes is feeling a bit short, but it always does around this point.

I almost hate to say Disney has been doing an amazing job with this franchise. I don't ask for the world from a franchise like this, just to be entertained and to be reminded of the comics I read so long ago.

I'd say a pair of 8.5/10's so far.
