HAWAII 5-0 Season 8 Discussion

Anyone else watching this season? I thought season 7 was the best season they've had since the first, but season 8 is pretty good, too! I was really worried about how the show would be without Chin and Kono, and while I do miss both of them, I really like Tani and Junior.

But my specific reason for starting this thread is about last night's set of episodes, so if you haven't seen them, go watch and come back! :)

So in the first of the two--the guy who shot Danny. WTF? I am so here for this mystery! Danny didn't remember him but there's obviously more to the story since they found the picture of Danny in the hotel room with "he deserved to die" written on it. If not for the guy asking Danny if he remembered him, I'd suspect a "strangers on a train" scenario where this guy got hired/talked into killing Danny for someone else. There has to be someone else involved, right? I can't wait to see how this plays out. Anyone have a theory?

Other things I loved: all of Danny's hallucinations. They were fun and happy and sweet. I love that he imagines he and Steve growing old together (and apparently living together, since Steve answered the call from Danny's granddaughter). I love their restaurant! I'd totally eat there.

Also, clearly I'm not the only one picking up on romantic vibes between Tani and Junior--Danny saw it, too! I love the idea of them together. There's serious chemistry there. I love the idea of that being explored.

The second episode was cute--the idea of Danny telling a story about a case to Charlie was so cute. And the ending with Steve showing up at his house, "breaking in" and eating the cookies Danny baked was adorable. I love this show!

There were! Blue Bloods didn't air an episode last night. Make sure you watch them in order or you'll get spoiled on the first one with the "previously on."

I loved the interaction between Grover and the Bomb Squad lead about what McGarrett was likely to do if they didn't come up with plan.

And Danny's explain nation to Charlie was cute "Uncle Steve talked and he fell asleep"

Was never a big Adam fan (at one point wished the Yakuza would knock him off) but he hasn't been to bad.

I thought for sure they were going to kill off Danno (given how little he's around anymore, given Scott Caan's limited filming schedule), so I was kind of surprised he survived. Loved the hallucination in episode one, and loved to see Dog bonding with Steve's dog in the second episode.

I have no theories on why this guy wanted Danny dead. They didn't give us much information on which to go.

I lost track a while ago - where is Rachel? Is she still living in Hawaii? I remember that she and Stan were going to move to the mainland at one point, but she and Stan ended their marriage.

Think she's still on Hawaii. When Danny was shot, Eric mentioned about Rachel being on the mainland with the kids.

Yeah, I think she is, too. I was wondering if she and Danny were going to get back together but I guess for now Steve and his very vocal objections are winning that battle. ;)

That cracked me up, too! I was like, yeah, Steve would come up with a crazy plan. I liked that we got to see Steve really on edge though--I don't know that we've ever seen him so upset before. The way he snapped at Tani and was just sort of freaking out in general was different from his usual attitude. It added to the tension.

I laughed big time when they cut away and showed Steve had shot the guy. Danny's general commentary about Steve was funny.

I've always liked him, but I'm surprised at how well they're integrating him with the team. It felt like an odd choice at first to make him a regular--not that I'm complaining. I love the actor.

I'm really glad they didn't. This show needs both Steve and Danno to make the magic work. Their relationship is at the heart of the show. I wouldn't want to watch it without either one of them.

I know! I really hope they play it out over the course of the season and it ends up being really interesting. I'm definitely super curious. Danny is my fav, so it's about time he had a really good mystery/arc built around him.

So what are the numbers of the episodes? I lost track this season after episode 1... I really hate that Daniel and Grace were paid less especially as it seems Scott's appearances are less.

The ratings this season are pretty good--about what they were last season, maybe a tad lower. I definitely think it's a bummer about Daniel and Grace--they'd been series regs for seven seasons... you'd think asking for salary parity wasn't unreasonable. :( They were definitely undervalued. I like the new characters/actors a lot but the way Daniel and Grace were written out definitely casts a shadow over the show for sure.

Which number episodes would you guys recommend to view..I don't have time to binge watch but interested to see what is up

I would say definitely see the first episode, the third (I think that's the first one with Junior--someone correct me if I'm wrong), the fourth (picks up on a thread from the first ep), and the ninth and tenth (sort of a two parter, and the second one is the one where Danny gets shot, which seems to introduce a new mystery). The second episode brings back a character from season seven, so if you have time for it that's a fun one too. The others are not essential viewing, though overall the season has been strong. But if you're looking to catch up quickly, start with the ones above.
