In the early 1980's I met Deke Slayton at an airshow. Shook his hand. Unfortunately, I didn't really know who he was at the time. The people I was with just told me, " he used to be a test pilot". I remember mainly thinking, "what the hell kind of name is "Deke"?" If he'd been "Bob" Slayton, I'd probably never have remembered him later. I appreciate much more now having gotten to meet him. I just wish I hadn't been so naive at the time.
