Have You Met Any Astronauts?

In the early 1980's I met Deke Slayton at an airshow. Shook his hand. Unfortunately, I didn't really know who he was at the time. The people I was with just told me, " he used to be a test pilot". I remember mainly thinking, "what the hell kind of name is "Deke"?" If he'd been "Bob" Slayton, I'd probably never have remembered him later. I appreciate much more now having gotten to meet him. I just wish I hadn't been so naive at the time.

I met Jim Lovell (Apollo 13) once, briefly. I got his autograph.

Have you ever listened to the commentary that he and Marilyn provide for the "Apollo 13" DVD? You can tell she is close to breaking down on a few occasions, but JIm... he goes on in his normally bright and positive way.

That's quite a special and fortunate meeting, since he died in 1993.

Wow... color me impressed! What were the occasions?

I was in a small group of graduate students who got to have lunch with Mae Jemison once (the first black woman in space).

Well...since he died when I was in 8th grade. No. No I did not. ;)

I forgot to add Senator Nelson and unofficial astronaut Gene Kranz.

oops,

I meant that I met Allan Bean not Buzz at a Farpoint convention.

I'm getting too old for this non remembering stuff.

Buck Rogers

Yes. Whenever the Seattle Museum of Flight hosts astronaut talks or lectures, and I'm in town, my father and I go. We've met Gordon Cooper, Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, Gene Kranz. There's been a few others, but I'm ebarassed to say the names escape me at the moment. Meeting every one of them has been a true pleasure, even if we were only able to exchange a few words.

Lovell's golng to be the commencement speaker here at IC when I graduate in May. That should be fun, or at least, it will be fun for me the space geek. :p
