Yes I know you're thinking Dune, But I just got done with Hellstrom's Hive. A book to make you shiver!

What is your favorite Herbert novel?

God Emperor. How drearily predictable!

I'm also fond of his ConSentiency 'verse. Particularly the Bureau of Sabotage and its function as a productive outlet for the kinds of folks who are otherwise a menace to society.

Heratics. Miles Teg FTW. I'm actually rather fond of the 'Destination Void' series; especially the ones about a revolution on a planet called Pandora where there's this avatar thing and plants with a collective consciousness. So unique and I've never seen anything even remotely reminiscent of it...nope, nothing at all... ;)

Incidentally, anyone caught any recent news on the latest attempt to remake Dune? I lost track after the bloke who directed Kingdom bailed.

LOL too true. Ship is no joke, and we did it to ourselves! Have you asked your cell-phone what it's up to lately?

I love God Emperor. One of the most fascinating books I've ever read. For a book where almost nothing happens, I couldn't put it down. It tied together things from the first three Dune books in new and interesting ways, and all the philosophical meanderings were engaging and thought-provoking. I usually find that sort of thing very dry, but Herbert had a knack for language.

Is the Destination: Void series any good? I'm particularly interested in The Jesus Incident, since I understand Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is pretty much The Jesus Incident: The Video Game.

I have a strange love for Under Pressure (Dragons of the Deep), An interesting character study -slash- cold war military drama. Herbert appears to just make up technology as the story moves along, very well written.

You might wanna fix your quote, dude!

I think I'll pick up The Jesus Incident on my next bookstore trip. :D

Good choice. The way the series is written, each book is pretty independent of one another so it really doesn't matter if you haven't read the one before it. As with the Dune books there's a considerable skip ahead in time with each story, so it makes it easier to pick up and go since each spends time re-introducing the world along with a new set of characters and circumstances.

On a related note: does anyone who read 'The Dosadi Experiment' understand what the hell the Gowachin legal system is all about. I've read the book twice and still can't get my head around it.

Heretics is my top choice, the war with the Honored Matres was really good.

I've read a fair amount of Herbert's non-Dune books, out of those it's a toss up between Hellstrom's Hive and The Dosadi Experiment. I tried to read The Jesus Incident, didn't make it though. That was a long time ago, maybe I should give it another shot.

EDIT: Been so long since I read Dosadi I don't remember the specifics of the Gowachin legal stuff. I don'tklnow of a good fan-made wiki for that book.
