Have any of you seen any Fan-edits and what do you think of them?

I just watched Adywan's Star Wars Revisited, a fan edit of the original Star Wars film. The edit fixes many of the changes made and not made in the special editions. It's pretty damn good. Have any of you seen any Fan-edits and what do you think of them?

I think the only one I've seen is Terminator 3: The Coming Storm which removed a lot of the worst parts of the movie (awkward humor mostly), IMO. I remember liking it more than the original film, though it's still only okay given the original material.

I may be looking at what people say here for suggestions of others to check out... One that immediately comes to mind: Any Matrix 2/Matrix 3 edits that make them worthwhile watches?

Dune: Third Stage Edition. Adds deleted/extended material to Lynch's 1984 film while retaining structure and composition. Can't deny it's improvement even if technically a bit ropey...

Somewhere out there is a fanedit of ST-TMP that was made around 1980-81.
It's called Star Wreck: The Commotion Picture. It isn't online anywhere that I've seen but I would love to find it...

The fan-edit I want is one of The Incredible Hulk, with the original arctic opening restored. Can't imagine there's much demand for it, though...

And yes, I've seen a number of good fan-edits. My favorite one is of Superman II (can't remember whose edit it is at the moment), that basically uses the Lester version as its template, but with all the Brando footage in place of the Susannah York re-shoots, and no "memory kiss" at the end. It's not perfect, of course, but it's much better than either the original Lester version or the so-called "Donner Cut."

I've seen Adywan's version of Star Wars. It makes a lot of improvements, but it goes pretty overboard in a couple of cases that make it fall far short of being definitive. Re-editing the lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan and Vader so that it is now composed of fast cuts with "The Battle of the Heroes" from Revenge of the Sith added to the score is just a travesty. And there's no need for some of the new shots added to The Battle of Yavin -- that new shot of the HUGE fleet of Tie Fighters flying into battle, for example, is especially out of place (especially with the "Imperial March" added to the score, which feels tremendously out of place every time it is heard).

I re-edited Minority Report once.

It is, however, not available online. :)

Heh, I remember that. I was one of the few who defended you. (As I recall. My heroicism is greatly exaggerated in my own mind :) )

Other than that bit of useless nostalgic history though. I find most if not all fan re-edits clumsy. Just cutting and pasting scenes/music with little to no skill.

The OP mentioned Adywan and his Star Wars Revisited. I think it is an insult to Adywan to call his work a simple "fan-Edit". Adywan took the whole "fan edit" to the umpteenth level.

I'm going to provide two youtube links.

Can someone please attempt to edit the PT into a coherent miniseries? That'd be totally wizard.

Watch The Clone Wars instead. There's no way to make the PT a good story until you do what TCW is doing: add the stuff they should have shown the first time around. Plus delete all the stuff we didn't need to/want to see. So basically, a near-total revamp. :rommie:

When all five seasons are done, you probably could edit out all the disposable episodes about fighting on this or that planet, stories about the Clones or stories focusing on minor characters, and come up with a very strong extended miniseries that finally tells a coherent, believable and worthwhile story about the tragic fall of Anakin Skywalker.

I was afraid someone was going to say that. :p Oh, and I do watch TCW. Good times.

Well, those are about as offensive and unnecessary as anything in the special editions. Though it is well done for amateur work.

I've read very good things about Superman Redeemed, which mixes Superman III & IV into something new and supposedly better, but I still haven't gotten around to seeing it.

There is a puritst edition out there as well that removes some of the things that Ady added. (The Tie-fighter imperial march, the battle of heroes music) but it is a lot better than the special editions. Basically it fixes what the special editions should have fixed. Also out there is a De-specialised edition of the original trilogy that gets rid of some of the changes made in SE.

Also on originaltrilogy.com someone is making a Ridiculous edit of Star Wars Episode I.

This is the only one I have seen. I don't think I'll be watching any other version again. :)

I found that one to be pretty effective from a pure standpoint, where it didn't try to deviate much but just improve the film. It's one where I'd feel comfortable only watching the edit from this point on.

On the other end of the spectrum, there's one that completely changes Star Wars into a grindhouse movie that is a lot of fun. It's one that is more of a fun experiment than anything else.

There's one that isn't as technically polished but has Kirk and crew fighting the bugs from Starship Troopers. Again, just a silly fun thing.
