Hats in Star Trek XI?!? Is there no God?

casualfriday.JPG

That's the worst-looking hat I ever saw. You wear a hat like that, you get a free bowl of soup!

What if there are helmets? Is that still a hat?

Ooh, helmets.

"The Helmet Song"

I can remember how it started
I'd follow the firemen
I'd dreamed of the astronauts
They looked so happy in their shiny metal headgear
I knew that inside they were smiling

My mother feared I was abnormal
I'd take out the colandar
And put it on my head
People are happy when they know that they're protected
Just let me tell you why I'm smiling

I've got my helmet on
Nothing can do me wrong
I've got my helmet on
Ya dop ba dop ba dop ba dop dop

In shining rows they sit in every beauty parlour
Down in the coal mines lighting the way
From distant battlefields to the tiniest motor scooter
There is peace on every single face

My friends all tell me I'm retreating
But how can they argue
With true serenity
If they would only try just once to wear a helmet
The world would soon be a better place

Come try my helmet on
Nothing will do you wrong
Come try my helmet on
Ya dop ba dop ba dop ba dop dop

In shining rows they sit in every beauty parlour
Serenity on every face
Come try my helmet on
Nothing will do you wrong
Come try my helmet on
Come try my helmet on
Nothing will do you wrong
Come try my helmet on
Come try my helmet on
Nothing will do you wrong
Come try my helmet on

Ya dop ba dop ba dop ba dop dop!

WHY are so many concerned about the look of the film?  They are NOT going to make it look like the 60's series. If anything it will look closer to ST: Enterprise. A show that I felt got its visuals right. Even when they did IAMD they made subtle changes to the Defiant interiors that made it look a little more texture. Im starting to think there is a group of fans out there that will except nothing less than a show or movie exactly modeled after TOS.
Why do a prequel otherwise?

For the story. Visuals should be the least concern. It doesnt have to match perfectly with TOS. Im not saying it shouldnt have some style connections to TOS. It just doesnt have to be exact. The fact that people are spazzing out over hats is a little extreme IMO.
Anything set during the TOS years should match, but there's room to show something that seems a logical progression in the earlier years. How logical and believable that is is what some people will react strongly to.

Enterprise got a lot of visual qualities wrong, looking more like a direct prequel to TNG than TOS, which immediately turned off many viewers I know (who in turn turned off the show). Coupled with mostly stinky stories and Scott Bakula's bizarre, wooden acting, the ratings plummeted. Abrams would be wise not to follow Berman's stubborn missteps. If they want to reboot "Star Trek," that's a different idea, but then just start all over. Or do the story as a book on tape, where visuals don't really matter.

For all the grief he took over lousy storytelling, George Lucas did a reasonable job of making the Star Wars prequels visually believable as taking place before the other movies. It would be nice if Star Trek does the same.

I am already imagining Chris Pine as Kirk, giving his moving speech to rally the troops to defeat the Big Bad:

(his arms waving like a lunatic, elbows at his sides, of course)

"We can... GO... when we want to. The night is YOUNG... and so am I. And we can DRESS. REAL. NEAT. From our... HATS. To our feet. And surprise 'em with the victory cry. SAY... We can act... If we want to. If we don't... Nobody will. And you can act real rude... and TOTALLY removed. And I can act like an imbecile."

Spock looks good in a hat.

Maybe, but Kirk looks like he's been hitting the donuts. (I don't even recognize the episode - what's that from?
"Assignment: Earth" -- the Launch Control Room

Not only are hats canon, but it can be implied from this that the intent was to have hats in any and all spinoffs, sequels and re-imaginings.

It they wore hats I probably wouldn't watch it. Or maybe I would, but I would be extra critical. >_>

Pike had a hat made for him in "The Cage", probably inspired by the hats used in "Forbidden Planet". Ultimately, it wasn't used in action, but you can see it sitting in his quaters.

You can't hotlink to images there. You'll need to provide a link to the page which contains it.

I'm disturbed the third choice is running neck & neck with "No", that says alot about Star Trek fans... nothing great either.

Sharr

Your post would seem to indicate Star Trek fans have no sense of humour.

KIRK:"Maybe I picked the wrong damn time to say this, Spock...but...

You look fabulous with that thing on."

Personally, I think the number one reason for the failure of BermanTrek was not enough hats. Hell, I was going to boycott the movie if there weren't hats. Now I'm going to boycott it unless everyone wears red suspenders.

Do you hear me, J.J. Abrams?! Red suspenders! Or else me and my imaginary friends boycott your movie!

Judges?

I'm sorry, the judges have ruled. We must continue the histrionics.

Next category: should canon be ignored. First question: should the Gorn be reimagined as the Geico Gecko?

Trek Canon: so dumb even a caveman could do it.
