Hatin on TFF

Center of the galaxy was definitely crappy planning.

The chief complaint, IINM, is that the Enterprise (and the BOP) shouldn’t be able to travel that far in any reasonable time period.

That point could have been addressed with some technobabble about a wormhole (possibly an unstable wormhole, adding urgency to the mission) or a technological solution like Barclay in The Nth Degree. Although it might have helped from the perspective of nitpicking geeks, mainstream audiences would likely find have found it pointless and perhaps alienating. That may be why Shatner decided to ignore the pickable nit.

Good call or bad?

I think bad call. You're right that it's an easy fix, just have Sybok discover some wormhole that leads there, like you say. When the script neglects things like that, it just comes off as either sloppy or lazy.

I'm going to have to admit that I don't hate this one all that much. Far from it, in fact. I think the potential here was considerable. Unfortunately it was not lived up to.

I still like it better than The Voyage Home. That movie, despite its popularity, is my least favorite Trek film ever. And I include the next gen movies in that pile. Even Nemesis, despite its ample flaws, didn't leave me walking out of the theater feeling insulted to my very core.

But back to TFF. The humor was misplayed rather than misplaced, I think. Too over the top "oh look at me, I made a funny!" type of delivery. I agree that the lost navigator and engineer head bump were good in principle, but carried to far in an effort to force the laugh.

Sybok was a poorly written character that the actor managed to lend a certain intrigue and dignity despite the script and direction. Kudos.

The single most glaring flaw of the film was it's lack of a central theme. It was a disconnected series of incidents loosely hung on an insubstantial framework that can in no way be dignified by the appellation of "plot." Shatner may have had a good idea to begin with, but he let himself get carried away with "wouldn't it be neat if" to the detriment of the story arc.

The special effects sucked.

But I loved a couple of things about the Enterprise in this incarnation. I for one loved the bridge layout. I also loved the forward observation lounge (except for the ridiculous "long range emergency transmitter.")

And Kelly never gave a better performance. Bones was simply awesome throughout, despite clumsy writing and denigrating direction.

Overall, not the worst Trek by a long chalk IMHO.

I agree, I like Final Frontier better than Voygage Home (at least in it's time travel bits. I'd like to cut out all the whales and time travel stuff just to have the conclusion to the TWOK storyline). The relative success of the comedy in IV is what led to it's misplaced and over usage in V. Humor should definitely be a part of it, but shouldn't ever be a driving force and usually fails more than it works in most Trek.
