Hatin' on Supernatural

Julie Benz. Mmmm. Daaaaarlaaaaa......
I saw her on the street here in Vancouver, actually. She was sat on a bench, talking on her cellphone and had her dog with her.

I wonder if her presence here means she's guesting in Supernatural again...

Oh... Checkmate, I'm sorry you are so emotionally upset about something. There seems to be some pain or anger there, and I don't know what it is. I wish I could help you, but I see no benefit in continuing a dialogue with you.
<shrugs> I wasn't the one living in denial and then stomping off with my fingers in my ears when proven wrong. Good riddance and fare well.

Had I been proven wrong, yeah. But as I said, you are welcome to be blinded by your personal whatevers to the issue.

And I am done with you. Feel free to make any claim or suppositions you want.

To add to that, I sat next to Joss Whedon in Starbucks here in Vancouver today. With the addition of Julie Benz and the fact that I served Alan Tudyk (Firefly's Wash) in HMV the other day, I have to wonder if something's going on in "North Hollywood."

Served him, eh? I'll be in my bunk.

I recently got into Supernatural.
(...)
he's an IDIOT. He's all id, on two feet.

Am I misreading this?

What's the appeal of a character like that?
Watching him get away with it. SFF smartass pretty boys always do, and that's what's fun to watch.

Although I confess that in the midst of all that, my favourite Supernatural episodes (from the first 3 seasons - S4 hasn't been shown here yet) are the ones where it gets really hot for them with the law. That kind of close calls. In contrast with the rest. But it shouldn't be like that all the time. It's not The Fugitive, it's Supernatural!

Edit : Also, most of the people Dean fools are women. Honestly, they don't care if he is an impostor.

Yeah, what the hell was up with that? I've never seen anyone wear their hair like [Sam] did in S1.
I have, but they're aged 16 at the most. Sort of the age of the main target audience.

(...)Everyone knows that Bin Laden deserves to burn. That wouldn't be a surprise to any of the characters.
Exactly.
If I might ask, AJBryant, (assuming you're still around) what is it about this show that you do like? Me, I like the fact that the characters really do seem to grow and change and are truly afflicted by their circumstances. (...)
If I can judge from the OP, AJ wolfed down 3 seasons over one week and perhaps didn't have much time to think twice about it. Not that I think about it much myself after I've watched it... :D I just like the 2nd-degree, the occasional self-parody, the supernatural element, the cheekiness, the character arcs, the thickening of the plot season after season, and Jensen Ackles' good looks. (Not necessarily in that order.)

Now haven't we all been faithful to a show we found much fault with? The more we like a show, the more we rant about its weaknesses. Hell, that's what the TBBS is all about. :p

In other words, you like everything. ;)

I love my show. Even in a hatin' thread, there's lovin' going on for it. :D Good call about AJ maybe not getting a chance to think about it all and let it sink in, ria 75. You haven't seen season 4 yet? You're in for a treat. Talk about a deepening of Dean's character. And they do get away with things because they're good looking and charming, but isn't that true in real life as well? Seriously, good looking people can get away with murder.

Kripke isn't writing for 16 year olds. He may have been at the beginning, but he changed his tune once he realized that his leads were capable of much more with better material. Part of the reason Dawn O wanted to cancel Supernatural was that it skewed too old and too male. Nielsen ratings bear that out. SPN has a lot of "over 34" fans. There's something going on there that appeals to more than screaming teenage girls. Some of the teen fan girls have been a little miffed with what's going on this season. They want their nice safe snuggle bunnies back but they're not getting them. Hell, Padalecki will be 27 in July. He's way past being a teen idol and having a god awful haircut like he had in season one. I prefer Sam as a grown up to him as a kid with a dorky haircut. God forbid this show were like Smallville where Clark is stuck in perpetual college age youth and never moving forward.

There's an appeal to the family dynamic that a lot of shows just can't duplicate. The sense of camaraderie. Whether that's writing or the fact they caught lightning in a bottle with the casting I'm not sure. They sure struck gold with the leads' chemistry.

Actually, when I said "the supernatural element", I didn't count the most horrific bits. I don't like horror per se. But the show has enough redeeming qualities to make me overlook that.

From what I've read, very few people posted in this thread as haters.

Very true. So it's not that unrealistic.

I'm a no-nonsense 33-year-old Frenchwoman. :D

Yes, what's up with that? Clark should know he looks better in black leather, and possibly a stubble, by now. Trying to blend in, huh? Red is not exactly a discreet colour. Audiences grow up, don't they know? That's what makes the success of Harry Potter, among other things.
If they think they have a safer bet on brand new young viewers, rather than the faithful fan base, by season 10 or something, they probably have it wrong.

Me, too. Unless I'm paying bills. Then I'm 107 and change.

Apparently they don't know. Welling is a year older than Ackles, but he's playing 10 years younger because Smallville must be "before Superman." There's an expiration date on playing an early 20ish kid. At least Sam and Dean are allowed to get older and their relationship to change and struggle.

Speaking of "After School Special," according to the posters from across the pond at sn.tv, (courtesy of digital spy) it beat Lost in the ratings for the week on one of Britain's ITV channels. 675K to 664K. Pretty cool.

Yeah.
Elsewhere, ITV2's Supernatural took 675k (3.1%) at 9pm, overtaking Sky1's Lost, which had 664k (3.1%) over the same period.
I think they're probably always pretty close if you add ITV2 and ITV2+1 ratings.
