Hated it

I can see where KSoldier is coming from. And assuming his username and Ft. Bragg location indicate a serviceman, he has every right to his opinion, especially seeing as how it's guys like him who fight to protect our right to express ourselves. :techman:

Suggesting that KSoldier 'won't last long here' for stating a dislike of a couple of movies sounds a bit...conformist, for lack of a better word. He didn't post in an existing thread, disrupting a positive conversation about the movies. He started his own, clearly stating where he's coming from and if anything, his was "invaded" by "naysayers". He asked a simple question. We have tons of threads here both pro and con regarding the other series'. I'm mystified why the new films should be treated any differently.

As to the subject at hand, I don't like the new movies, but I don't hate them, either. I'm glad so many people do enjoy them, though. they're just not for me. I can't stand milk, and you couldn't pay me a thousand dollars to drink a glass, but that isn't going to stop anyone else from drinking it, and that's how it should be. Variety is the spice of life, and all that. :)

I'm not trying to knock anybody here, and the last thing on Earth I want to do is start a fight. :) I just felt the need to add.

This may seem off topic (briefly) but the milk comment made me think of this:

Also, I acknowledge other points of view but there can be fun to explore reasons why. I have heard the "Abrams has deleted the other series" and I just disagree with that point of view. Respectfully, of course :techman:

I think people have just got a little frustrated with his insistence that the reboot has 'destroyed all of trek' or that 'The Motion Picture can't happen' which is clearly not the case.

I don't think anyone has been particularly out of order to be honest.

A new version of an old story doesn't mean the previous version has been rejected and replaced.

There are multiple versions of Tarzan, Zorro, Sherlock Holmes, Batman, Dracula, etc. So a new version of STAR TREK, with its own brand-new continuity, doesn't wipe out the old versions.

It's that simple.

And you don't have to choose one over the other. I've written this before but, even as a kid, I was capable of understanding that the old black-and-white TARZAN movies, the new color movies, the TV show, the Saturday morning cartoons, the comic books, and the original novels each had their own continuities and were not necessarily consistent with each other. And I was fine with that.

The new TREK is not exactly the same as the old TREK. So what? The Hammer DRACULA movies are not the same as Universal DRACULA movies. Doesn't mean I can't enjoy both.

Same with the various different flavors of STAR TREK.

I took my kids to see Trek 09 when they were 10; they thought it the best day ever when I said we could go see it again. So I like it for the joy it brought them. It is not to my tastes as I've recorded elsewher on bbs, not that anyone should care. On DVD, I appreciated it more cuz I could turn down the volume, and because of the thematic stuff people had pointed out on bbs.

STID, yish. IMHO. NO need for it to be Khan; I'm sick of villains; I dislike action set-piece movies; the death scene was silly, unnecessary and unmoving. To me. YMMV, and if so, good.

It's been 70 years since the US military did anything that could reasonably be interpreted as defending anyone's rights. Since then, the opposite is closer to the truth.

What can I say? I really miss Amanda.

On other hand, it's possibly worth pointing out that Amanda appeared in exactly one episode of the TV show and later made a five-minute cameo in one of the movies.

So it's not as though she was the heart and soul of the franchise.

Harry Mudd got more screen time. :)

Am I one of the only ones who hated the Trek reboot?

It isn't my lack of devotion to the world of Trek that brings me to this intense dislike, but exactly the opposite. In my opinion, the reboot killed all that is Star Trek.

These movies pretty much destroyed all the stories that led up to it. Every bit of TOS was built upon the foundation of the Kirk, Spock, McCoy relationship, which in the reboot, has been totally redefined. Oh yes, a "new" foundation has been created, but don't fool yourselves, it is not the same.

Because of this (as well as the destruction of physical plot devices, planets, ships, characters, etc.) every bit of Trek has been erased. What were they thinking?

Thanks for warning me not to "fool myself"

I think Perrin ended up with just as much screen time.

I love TOS, TAS, DS9 the TOS movies, First Contact and the Abrams Trek movies. Each one is like a different food or beverage I can enjoy anytime I like. Now Star Trek Generations, I hate with a passion, but I don't go off on anyone who might happen to enjoy it. Who am I to pee on someone's parade for liking something I don't? At least I'm respectful to other's who have differing opinions.

The Abrams films are fun entertaining films that capture the spirit of TOS in an updated fashioned. It's why I can also enjoy all the James Bond films. Each one is unique, while still being good.

Think of JJ's films this way: Given the camp perception TOS has gotten over the decades. It could've been a lot worse. What we got was TOS, if it was made in the 21st century; not some over the top comedy that amped the sillier aspects of TOS.

Oh, Dark Shadows -- you poor, poor franchise...

They shouldn't be and, for the most part, they aren't.

I think I've got it covered. ;)

- Brett -, this isn't the proper forum in which to to have that discussion. Please drop it now.

1) Being a soldier has no bearing on his opinion of the Abrams' film. While his service is appreciated it doesn't give him any special privileges when discussing Star Trek. No one is denying him his opinion they're simply questioning his knowledge of the facts and giving counter opinions.

2) The comments about how long he'll last comes from how he presented his opinion, not the opinion it's self. Plenty of people have negative opinions of the last two film, but manage to express them with resorting to hyperbole and a refusal to accept facts that counter that opinion.

3) No one owns a thread. Once it starts everyone's contributions are welcome including the "naysayers". No one is treating these films differently than the rest. There have been plenty of threads discussing the pluses and minuses of both films.

I think it was the TAS episode Yesteryear that made me warm to both Amanda and Sarek.
They seemed better parents in TAS than was portrayed in live action.

Being in the minority here I didn't think Amanda was that great a mother to Spock in "A Journey to Babel". There's no way I'd (seriously) risk my son's life to save my husband (or my own). She was though I admit cute in her devotion to Sarek where she just ignored his demands on her to 'behave'

Thank you.

That was exactly my point, we have had a lot of constructive criticism of the films here over the last five and a half years, the OP does not look to be attempting one of them.

Starting out using the word "hate" is a good clue.

That was the serious I had in mind and I couldn't put my finger on it. I forgot that movie even existed

But, yeah, JJ could have went that way.

As I said, the new movies feel like what you get if they started relaunching TOS in the 21st century; without the other movies and series ever having happened.

I totally agree! :) One of the things that I enjoy, in fact, is so-called thread drift. It's very true-to-life as far as conversations go. It's just that with the new movies, the battles of viewpoints seems inevitable for some reason. They always seems to bring out the 'you got peanut butter on my chocolate/you got chocolate on my peanut butter' type conversations. I have no idea why that is.
