Hated it

No you aren't alone, but you posted in the NuTrek apologist/rabid fan forum, hence the hate-flame posts.

No one has "hate-flame"-d the original poster. If we disagree we are apologists and rabid? The OP clearly has no idea what an alternate universe is and it shows in his/her posts on the subject.

Yeah, no rabid fan boy here. I just don't agree with the OP. Disagreement is hatred?

On another note, why is it, in the discussion of the Abrams film about parallel universes, no one talks about the Mirror Universe? That is the same thing, the crew's lives unfolding in a different way than what had previously been portrayed.

In that universe, Amok Time may not have happened, Sarek may have died because Spock was serving the Empire, etc. Why is that treated differently?

So Spock and Uhura were dating on TOS, and having whiny lovers' quarrels on duty? Gee, I must've missed that.

That's not the history of the Prime timeline, it's the Abramsverse timeline. They didn't change anything about the history of the Prime.

And that was some collective hallucination we all experienced, thinking that "Amok Time" happened on a planet that no longer existed, and how about "Journey to Babel"... Ghost Amanda looked pretty real. For a dead woman, that was a very solid slap she gave Spock in Sickbay.

 Why are there so many posters who don't seem to get the idea of an alternate timeline?

That I like them too is like you said, a bonus. Yes they've lost a little soul in the process but what re-make/reboot doesn't to a certain degree?

The thing is, I think the Abrams films have more soul than the Berman-led spinoffs.
That's...

...not a bad point.

Now I love TNG and DS9; can tolerate Voyager, Enterprise I have a few I can watch. I don't really dislike any of the spinoffs, but they don't hold the same place in the heart that TOS and the TOS movies do. By the end, it was paint by numbers Trek.

The new movies added back a level of excitement, of fun. Yeah it was over the top at points, but so was TOS. And part of TOS's charm was the over the top moments. But above all, the characters felt like characters. They didn't feel like actors hitting marks and spouting off techno-babble. It wasn't dry.

Where's Doc Brown and his chalkboard when you need him?

They're stuck in the darkest 1985. :(

Am I one of the only ones who hated the Trek reboot?
I hate them, too.

I hate them for being too infrequent, and for being so damned entertaining. And now, the next one isn't until 2016?

Damn them! Damn them to hell!

Damnation JJ, get to work!

I agree. I really cannot wait for the next movie, I hope the 50th anniversary creates a good buzz. It's what happens after this that I'm fearful of.

Soul? Eh, debatable. More effort and investment? Oh, hell yes.

Yeah, I don't think they have more 'soul' at all. In fact, I'd probably argue the opposite in so far as they are movies designed to put as many asses in seats as possible in a broadly cynical way by pandering to lowest common denominator cinema tropes and ideas largely derivative of superior material.

this is what I hope for trek in 2016.

Star trek 3 (50th anniversary) = James Bons Skyfall (50th anniversary)

Needs more lines adding. There's a universe created when Nero arrives and then there's another universe created when Spock arrives later. Presumably, there's also another universe created when Vulcan is sucked into a black hole and its remains are spewed out somewhere.

Oh, and there's also the universe created from the remains of the Nerada too.

The post Spock arrival one is the one that matters. You could probably add a dozen lines to the Prime line too, given all the temporal hijinks in TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT.

No - Spock, for whatever reason ( the vagaries of red matter blackhole time travel ), ends up in the universe created by Nero's arrival. This is presumably because they went into the same red matter black hole as opposed to different ones.

Still in a place called "complete irrelevance to the Trek franchise", as usual. :techman:

If you think about it, if you really wanted to have a open discussion about either of the Abrams Trek movies, the Star Trek Movies XI+ forum is probably the last place you'd want to do it.

Problem is, if you do open a thread specifically about the Abrams movies in the General Trek Discussion forum, the mods will likely move it here. End of open discussion with multiple viewpoints and opinions, a (usually) polite give and respond debate.

If the board members who basically live in here would tone it down, it would be a much more entertaining forum to visit.

:)

Exactly, it spat both of them out into the same alternate universe.

How are the discussion here not "open"? We've seen all sorts of opinions presented here. The only ones that get shut down ( no matter what side they fall on) are the ones that violate the rules.
