Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

mount iwafune is the location where alot of sentai and power ranger battles are fought

Yeah, it's become iconic. In my toku-inspired Tangent Knights audiobook trilogy, I set a huge, important confrontation in Book 3 in a location that was based on Mt. Iwafune and implicitly might have actually been it (or an alternate multiversal counterpart of it). Once I decided to do that, I made sure to have the scene feature a massive explosion.

I recently rewatched Power Rangers SPD and RPM, and I noticed that they used a quarry location somewhere in New Zealand that was a pretty good match for Mt. Iwafune, so they could intercut new and stock footage and it was sometimes hard to tell the difference, except in wider shots.

I wonder when Iwafuneyama started to become a toku location. I haven't spotted its use in shows from the '80s or early '90s, but I recall seeing it in late-'90s Ultraman shows. So I guess it was sometime in the '90s.

New GARO project (Inheritor of Steel) started yesterday. Ryuuga getting another go. I liked GoldStorm a fair bit, so I've been rather looking forward to this one. No Rian, which is a little odd, but maybe they'll address it as the show goes on. New Horror designs are a little less off the wall than usual, but actually look great so far.

And, in a change, we appear to be getting official (though seemingly machine generated) subs on Youtube, similar to what has been happening with the Ultraman franchise. The GARO Project channel had the episode available right away yesterday. Not sure if this is going to be an ongoing thing or if it was just the first episode, but it was a nice change.

I've missed this franchise. Versus Road wasn't really my cup of tea, but I've generally enjoyed every other iteration they've tried so far. Might have rewatch some of the older stuff this week now that it's back in the front of my mind.

The first episode of the new series btw

looks like the guy in the monster outfit is pulling a double duty as camera man

I guess that's a shot of them rehearsing the fight before the helmets go on? Or maybe they're filming a close-up shot of the Boonboomgers' feet, since that's where the camera's pointing.

I briefly wondered if the helmets might be added digitally afterward, but if so, those head coverings (I don't know the right term) would presumably have tracking dots on them.

Seriously? Who thought that was a good aesthetic or functional choice?

The same person who thought sticking a big tire on the front of the helmet was too. We'll get used to it, like we've gotten used to all the other silly designs over the years.

It’s a balaclava

Actually this might be the perfect time to incorporate them into the show since they use them in racing

This is one of the few times where I'm really not likeing a Sentai Suit design.

I guess this is that year for me.

You could get used to it / like it, but I might never like this years design.

Hopefully next year/series design will not have such a goofy/bad design.

I don't mean "get used to" in terms of liking it, but in terms of learning to get past it and focus on the more important elements of the show. I've learned to live with a lot of silly toku costume, vehicle, and prop designs because I was invested enough in the stories and characters to look past the surface stuff that's meant for selling toys to kids.

Right. By now a majority are at the “Okay we get it they’re not the most appealing costumes but let’s move on now to other things”

Yeah... Still, what little we know beyond the costumes so far makes it seem like this is a pretty routine Sentai season, with familiar character types and the tried-and-true vehicular theme. It seems like they're playing it safe this time, so even if they do it well, a return to routine is likely to be something of a letdown after the bold experiments of the last two seasons, especially the grand, epic storytelling of Kingohger. But who knows? Maybe there will be some interesting twist to it beyond just weird designs.

The other aspects remains TBD (To Be Determined).

But given what info we have now, "The Aesthics & Images of the costumes", this is one of the few years where I'm thoroughly disappointed before the show even starts, and I've seen the majority of Super Sentai.

Hell, my own Mail Man has a better "Super Sentai"-esque design then this years abomination of a design.

And I couldn't even see his face in broad daylight because his Visor was "Black Tinted".
