Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

In the one of the issues of the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/MMPR crossover comic, the two teams will be switching places with the Turtles becoming Power Rangers and the Rangers becoming Ninja. The designs for the two teams have made their way online, and Io9 has them.

the Rangers becoming Ninja

Not for the first time...

One thing I realized after seeing the ninja-themed Sentai shows (Kakuranger, Hurricaneger, Ninninger) is that the makers of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles really didn't know much about ninja lore. All we see is the Turtles doing martial arts and sneaking around -- they never do any of the fantasy jutsu that are common in Japanese ninja fiction, like creating illusions, multiplying themselves, switching out with decoys, burrowing underground, walking on water, etc. I wonder what Japanese audiences think of the TMNT.

Ryuusoulger episoder 47

Pretty neat how they framed the beginning of the episode. It was almost like a mainstream TV show in America. Last episode ended with a bright flash of light and now Koh finds himself in a dream.

I think a digimon episode began like that.

Nice to see Nada again. It was a clever plan(albeit gross) for Melto to have Kreon make a minusaur so that they can escape

The last half of the episode was the actors pouring their heart and soul into the scene, It's likely the last episode will be very CGI heavy and won't have many moments for them to shine

So Canalo wants to go back into the "Matrix"? lol

Yeah, Ryu 47 was a pretty effective episode. Interesting you mention Digimon, because the design of Heras's ultimate form and the captured people linked to tendrils of energy reminded me of the very creepy design work from the climactic arc of Digimon Tamers. Really eerie and visually striking stuff. The story was pretty potent too, getting dramatic in a way the show has done too infrequently of late. And Asuna's big tearful speech at the climax was poignant and powerful. Ichika Osaki is an amazing actress and she's been given too few chances to shine lately, but this was spectacular.

By the way, it turns out that Heras's voice actress, Romi Park, was Dayu in Shinkenger. I thought she sounded familiar.

Zero-One episode 24

"Humagear.....assemble"

Way to go Izu. Oh They're definitely going to sell that secretary Izu progrise key. I guess this was a covert uprising.

"Lethal Weapon" ? No Danny Glover?

Gai finally got what he deserved too

Chair! You had one job! Now Horobi is loose and we've got burning falcon form tonight

It's an ad for a special AIMS premium bandai set, with a wolf key that doesn't open, and a spinner for the cheetah key

Between releasing one of Taro's abs and a functionally useless Shooting Wolf, P-Bandai is going far for fandom in-jokes.

I missed last weeks of Beast Morphers return. Clips from today's episode

Zero-One: This was great. All the HumaGear Aruto has helped clapped their hands real hard and made a wish and turned Metal Cluster good again! So sappy but so awesome! And what an entrance for Izu bringing it to the rescue! That flip she did was really cool -- but it paled next to that ominous sidelong "Now you're in for it" look she cast in Gai's direction just before Zero-One went at him. Izu is the real star of the show at this point.

I was expecting the reformed Metal Cluster to look different from the evil one, but the only difference seemed to be the new sword. It's ironic that its announcement said "Changing to lethal weapon" when it's actually just the opposite, a weapon that heals Ark-infected HumaGear rather than destroying them. I'm glad they finally made that breakthrough.

Interesting that Izu's full name is apparently just "Secretary Izu." And I think it was actually spelled "Secretary Is" on the Progrise Key.

Yeah. For 70 dollars it can't even be broken down into individual zord parts. Where's the fun in that?

Although it doesn't have articulated fingers I believe

The original giant robot costumes most often had solid fists anyway, so no biggie there. On rare occasion on would use the actor's gloved hand to hold a sword or something even though in other shots it'd be a big Hulk toy fist sort of thing. The Dekarobo comes to mind as an example.

I get that they wouldn't have these toys able to break apart and thus compromise poseability... In any case, $70 is a tough one to swallow, even with all of those neat swappable headpieces!

Yeah, that was so silly. Once I started to see it, I couldn't unsee it. And it was there from the start of Power Rangers, with the Dino Megazord/Daizyuzin.

I must have been half asleep. I misspoke. The left hand of the zeo megazord looks like might have articulation like some transformers do

Also Hasbro will be releasing their take on the original dino megazord

https://pwrrngr.com/2020/02/22/toy-fair-2020-mighty-morphin-buildable-dino-megazord-4554

The Mighty Morphin Rangers call upon their powerful Zords to lead the Rangers into battle. The BUILDABLE DINO MEGAZORD Assortment includes the TYRANNOSAURUS REX DINO ZORD figure, TRICERATOPS AND SABERTOOTH TIGER DINO ZORD 2-pack figures and MASTODON AND PTERODACTYL DINO ZORD 2-pack figures. Combine all figures to build the DINO MEGAZORD.

It's around the same size as the 2010/Legacy version.

The proportions of the combined mode are pretty great. The elbows are a long time coming, and this is about as "suit accurate" as one can get in this price point.

Ryuusoulger 48

It's finally here. The end of another season. I like how it wasn't the red ranger/Koh that took down the final villain here. Where did Towa get that burst of speed from?

Did Koh end up in the upside down?

Glad to see Ui return

I'm surprised they had the courage to kill off all the Kishiryuu. That was unexpected. Surely they'll be back somehow'

So Hera's is Thanos? Some of the dialogue was reminiscent of Thanos

Some series thoughts

-Canalo is probably the worst 6th ranger yet. His marriage subplot was terrible. He had no bearing on the series plot whatsoever unlike Noël from "Lupinranger VS Patranger"

-Unlike Kamen Rider the characters never break out much from their 2 dimensional background

-At least Bamba warmed up a little. I don't think Towa advanced that much from the beginning

- Ichika Osaki continues to shine even though the series never brought out Asuna's true potential.

"She eats alot and has unexplained super strength"

- I feel like they didn't do much with Koh. He had more rage filled side that never truly got explored. He just grinned alot

I was doing some research on Ryusoulger, and apparently Toei just copied and pasted the core team color scheme from Kyoryuger/Dino Charge, which I think is lazy.

I thought it was a pretty good finale, with some nice heroic speeches and potent acting moments and the like. It was interesting to see a giant battle staged on location, something that doesn't happen often, particularly with so many combatants. The henshin sequence with the determined slow-motion walks toward the camera was great. And I loved how Koh's final confrontation with Heras was, characteristically for him, so gentle and hopeful and humanistic.

Still, in retrospect, Samurai, you have a point. It was an enjoyable series, but it didn't develop the characters as far as it could have, and after a strong start it just kind of settled into a status quo that didn't evolve except to add new toys and gimmicks.

Also, there's a dark aspect to the finale I only just recognized. Last week, Heras destroyed nearly the entire city in one blow, and the giant battle here was waged in the resultant wasteland. Now, I expected that eventually they'd use that Ryusoul they have that restores destroyed things and put the city back together. But they lost the use of all their Ryusouls in defeating Heras. Which means the city is still destroyed and probably millions of people died.

Plus, Pricious showing up inexplicably alive at the end and getting carted off by Wiseru and Kleon was weird. I guess they're saving them for the reunion movies.

Some little sentai tropes I had hoped they would have used in the finale but didn't

-Cracked helmet. Perfect opportunity to use it when Koh was stabbing Heras with the Ryuusoul Caliber

-Helmetless role call

Yeah aside from two generals of the druidon they're not really defeated! Next week Kleon could infect someone(disgustingly) to grow a minusaur and the ryuusoulger can't stop it!

Except for some shiny celebrities and one imaginative high school student waiting in the wings. I guess we'll leave that for the VS.

Speaking of Kiramager. I liked the passing of the torch moment for end of Ryuusoulger and beginning of Kiramager

Also it's not my business to pry but I think Ui's actress is reacting to some medication she took. She doesn't appear to be showing a baby bump. Anyways.

It will be interesting to see what Hasbro has in store for Ryuusoulger now.

Could have been familiarity and somehow they hoped it could help with revenue

There was a helmetless roll call of a sort, with the slow-motion striding toward camera and announcing while they transformed.

I think my wording didn't completely convey my point, which is this: based on the research I did, Kyoryuger/Dino Charge and Ryusoulger use the exact same color scheme for their core teams (Red, Blue, Pink, Black, Green, and Gold), which is, IMO, a lazy decision on Toei's part, especially given the shared dinosaur theme of both series, as well as blatant copy-and-pasting.

Practically everything about Ryusoulger was a rehash of ideas from the previous three dino-Sentai. Ancient human tribes who were alive in the age of Dinosaurs? Zyuranger. Talking dinosaur robos, including a red tyrannosaurus who appended "Tyra" to his sentences? Abaranger. Collectible items that each have a different weird power? Kyoryuger. Villain that's a sentient suit of armor possessing different wearers? Both Abaranger and Kyoryuger.

So reusing the color scheme strikes me as just another homage/borrowing along with all the others. Lots of Sentai seasons intentionally reuse previous color schemes -- for instance, the anniversary season Gokaiger used the same color scheme (red, blue, yellow, green, pink) as the original Sentai series Gorenger.
