Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

I finally got an opportunity to start the second (Super) half of Ninja Steel, and have to say that Echoes of Evil is a pretty fun way to both kickstart a new storyline and restore the status quo for the Rangers.

Continuity is one of my big attraction points when it comes to Power Rangers, and so it was nice to see Sledge and at least two of his crew again (seeing Fury and Curio again would've made things even better). Having Sledge back also gave the writers a fun way to introduce Badonna, who kind of reminds me of a combination of Scorpina, Vypra, Camille, and Dayu even after only having seen the one episode with her.

I do have to say in closing that as juvenile as Victor and Monty escaping the Warrior Dome because of farting was, seeing the gag carried over and actually paid off is honestly the kind of goofy silliness that gives Power Rangers some of its charm, and so I didn't really mind it.

Update. Superhero time will be taking a hiatus. I thought it was just next week but it's going to be three weeks at least

https://news.tokunation.com/2020/05...-super-hero-time-hiatus-due-to-covid-19-67058

TV-Asahi has announced a hiatus of sorts for the Super Hero Time programming block- which currently consists of Mashin Sentai Kiramager and Kamen Rider Zero-One.

This hiatus is due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak and the extended state of emergency in Japan.

For the next three weeks, alternative episodes will air in place of the usual Super Hero Time lineup-

*Kamen Rider Zero-One will release a two-part Presidents Special recapping the events of the series from Kamen Rider Zero-Ones’ perspective, followed by a Shooting Special shot from Kamen Rider Vulcan’s point of view.

*Mashin Sentai Kiramager will air the Episode ZERO special originally released in theaters, followed by Directors’ Cut revamps of the series’ first two episodes.

Zero-One #35: Poor Aruto. Everyone else is doing his joke thing now and he can't get a word in.

You can nearly always count on Kamen Rider to have shifting allegiances and sympathetic villains, and now we see Horobi and Aruto starting to move toward an understanding. It's the first time Horobi has acknowledged the possibility that Humagears and humans could coexist, even as a "We'll see." Meanwhile, we have Fuwa talking Naki down from his rather cataclysmic move in last week's cliffhanger -- probably a bit too easily.

I would say that things were coalescing around Gai as the ultimate villain here, the one behind everything bad that's happened, including the creation of the Ark. But the revival of Raiden/Ikazuchi at the end had the feeling of the debut of a new archnemesis -- just from the way it was staged and presented, and because if we're seeing the start of Gai's downfall, that opens the door for the final boss to arrive. On the other hand, Raiden was an ambiguous figure in his first appearance, seeming like a decent guy until his MJ.net programming took over. So I'm not sure where they're going from here. And unfortunately it'll be a few weeks before we get an answer.

So Fuwa's secret is out now -- at least Yaiba now knows he breaks up at Aruto-style puns. But will she tell Aruto?

He's basically become a meme

Another week and another beat down for Gai

They really blew the budget for this pre-hiatus episode. Metal Cluster Hopper using the nanobots to form platforms in mid-air to account for his inability to fly was some serious writing genius.

Also. We need one more member to properly do a BSG "Final Five" joke

Did they just "The Last Jedi" Fuwa? He thought he was special but he's not

I must've missed that part. I sometimes lose focus during the fight scenes, since I'm more interested in the story and character stuff.

Kiramager episode 10

Well. Last episode review for quite sometime unfortunately.

This was quite a weird episode in typical Sentai fashion. We also got some hints at a Sayo/Iyo relationship. A first in Sentai?

Shiguru was HILARIOUS today. Got some good laughs with his over-reaction.

Sayo played a big part in saving the monster's victims. She was smart enough to find him, to destroy his emblem, she could have easily saved Iyo if the footsoldier didn't protect the monster, and she basically forced Shiguru to face his problem. This episode just show how competent she is once again.

We also got the fight song for Kiramejin

In a meta scene Iyo's fan has a pillow with Shigura's picture from the opening credits on it

Watched episode 6 of Jetman, Get Angry Robo!, this afternoon.
I've been looking forward to our first giant mecha appearance, and we finally got it today. The fights with the House Dimension were OK, they just both ended up pretty one sided first in the Dimension Beasts favor, and then in the Sentain team's favor.
The mouths appearing in the walls and the tentacles grabbing people was actually pretty creepy.
I didn't expect there to be so much conflict within the team, it adds a nice little bit of drama to the episodes.

I should rewatch Jetman now that I can actually see it subtitled. I first watched it back when you had to trade VHS tapes to watch sentai and trying to suss out what is happening. Dairanger works surprisingly well without subtitles though I don't think I have the wherewithal and patience to ever do anything like that again. I liked the feel of Jetman, it seemed different to me than most of the series.

Kiramager episode 10

A pretty fun episode -- nominally a Shigeru focus, but Sayo ended up being more impressive in it. Although the setup was weird. When the gang was getting excited about the creepy dead-girl video on the Internet, I thought, "What the heck, haven't any of you ever seen a Japanese horror movie?" I mean, the idol's name was Yodomihime -- Princess Yodon, essentially. How did they not catch that she was named after their enemies?

They did a similar plot on Kyoryuger, with Candelira in her human form becoming an idol and advancing the villains' plot with a song whose lyrics were blatantly evil yet somehow went unnoticed by her enthralled fans. That was a rather ugly song, though (basically just the villains' leitmotif with lyrics), and this one was better.

Interesting that Jyuuru isn't the only one who can use Kiramental to create things. I presume we'll see the other Kiramagers developing special attacks the same way. Although not until next month at least.

We also got some hints at a Sayo/Iyo relationship. A first in Sentai?

Not a relationship, since Sayo's not interested, but yeah, I didn't expect that twist. I don't think it's the first time we've seen a suggestion of same-sex attraction in Sentai, though it's never been more than a tease. I vaguely remember seeing a similar plot where the obsessive fan was male and transferred his devotion at the end from a female Ranger to a male one in much the same way. But I'm not certain.

I liked the feel of Jetman, it seemed different to me than most of the series.

Yep -- as JD said, it was unusually dramatic and emotional, with a ton of team conflict on both the heroes' and villains' sides.

Around the 35th episode mark of Sentai or Kamen rider the rumors start appearing for the next series. The first rumor for the next Kamen Rider series of the Reiwa era has popped up.

Grains of salt.

Hmm. Maybe a pun of "duo"?

D-O ?
Du-O?

Having a couple be a rider team would be interesting.

Rider 2- Did you do forget to lock the gate at home?
Rider 1- Not now when we're in the middle of a fight!

I guess Zero-One's Yaiba is slowly paving the way for a female rider to bump up in ranks to 2nd rider.

Again. Grains of salt. Some or none of this could be true. Maybe sprinkles of truth are seeded in like it revolving around animals

I hope some of that is true. I absolutely hate Zero-One's story so I dropped it when he lost his company, but I really enjoyed seeing a female Rider who was part of the main cast and not just a one off or barely appearing character (also having her be a fairly strong character and not a damsel in distress was great to see). If Zero-One can start a trend normalizing female Riders being a regular thing, then the show will have been worth it, even if its probably the worst written Rider that I've watched/tried to watch.

It sounds like this female Rider wouldn't be secondary, but a co-lead Rider, equal with the male lead, like how the Go-On Wings shared the Sixth Ranger position in Go-Onger. Sounds cool. It'll be a long time before we get a solo female lead, I expect, but this is a good step, if the rumors are true. I've been disappointed by how marginalized Yaiba/Valkyrie has been in Zero-One. I'll be glad if they advance beyond that next year.

I assume that they're talking about a two-Rider team, rather than "The two of us are a single Kamen Rider" like W.

This would be the second time we've seen a Rider based on Gashapon eggs (those little plastic eggs that come out of vending machines and have prizes inside). The first was Kamen Rider Birth in OOO -- also the second series of its era, "Phase II" of Heisei. That Rider System also had two users, consecutively at first but later simultaneously. And a "modified animal" as the driver belt sounds similar to Kiva.

IMO/ I think it adds a nice layer/next chapter to the series. Aruto has failed to hold on to Hiden Intelligence and he must come up with a way to survive( Hiden Manufacturing)

He used to be at the top. Now he's starting over with a smaller company and dealing with the fall.

Plus he started something on his own. It wasn't handed to him/passed down by family. Isn't there a moral in there somewhere? Like in "Inception"? Walk your own path

Izu's is "the Humagear who walks on the path of Heaven"

;)

I hope we don't have to wait 40 years. I think a sister duo(there's that word again!) would be interesting depending on how they write it.

Psychotic/ sadistic sister/sister team? or girly girly sailor moon version?

Apparently new episodes of Kiramager and Zero-One will resume sometime around mid-June. This based on an anime starting back in mid-June too

That doesn't make sense, how does Precure returning relate to Kiramager and Zero-One resuming production? There's literally no connection beyond all three being Toei properties but of course Toei Animation has absolutely nothing to do toku productions and anime can be more easily produced with social distancing. Animators can don't have to sit next to esch other and actors don't have to record their dialog together.

It's not about when they resume production (which would've had to be a while ago), it's about when they resume airing. Precure is part of the same Sunday morning programming block as Super Hero Time.

That doesn't really change what I said. Why does Precure airing new episodes mean toku will air new episodes? Precure stopped airing new episodes weeks before Kiramager and Zero-One, there's no reason to assume they'd return at the same time, they do not coordinate their schedules.
And the picture in the tweet only lists the show's titles, where does it say they're airing new episodes for any of those shows? I don't see a date either, how do we no this isn't a listing from april or even march?

No reason why they wouldn't either. Maybe they want to make an event of the return.
