Kiramager episode 4

Not a good sign to start the series with a mecha battle in the beginning. Usually something bad is coming

Saw the ruse coming a mile away with Garuza.

So far I like that the series has a bit of continuity. They brought back the doppelganger doll. However they added an unseen adventure between episode 3 and 4 with that neandethralian monster

Interesting to learn that Jyuruu shares a connection with the Crystalian King.

Nice red solo fight with the first general of the series. You could tell it was Koichi Sakamoto's style

Garuza was really proud of Smog Joukey's chainsaw tail.

Smog Joukey's burn blacker attack was part Godzilla and part Zyuranger tyranno attack homage

In light of KirameiRed's actor having tested positive for the corona virus a large outpouring of support from past sentai alumni has come wishing him a speedy recovery

Kiramager episode 4

This was pretty good. At first it looked like we were heading for an episode about Tametomo and Sena's petty bickering, but then it swerved into a pretty major story establishing Garuza and some key pieces of the series arc, and becoming pretty dramatic. It's good that they're not glossing over Mabushiina's grief over her father.

Was this consistent with the movie? I don't remember if Jyuuru dreamt about the king's assassination as shown here, or if Garuza actually made that laughing sound.

Interesting to see a mecha that's also a monster, though I guess we've seen ones before like Dragon Caesar (DragonZord) and GoZyuJin (Q-Rex Drill) in GoZyuRex mode. But Garuza made a big tactical error by letting his anger get the better of him and destroying his own side's monster, rather than teaming up with it against KirameiJin. Maybe the reason he retreated was to save face after realizing his mistake. That erratic, impulsive behavior is a weakness I hope the Kiramagers notice and take advantage of.

I suspected it was a ruse, but I figured there was a chance it might be really true, since we've seen a number of seasons where the supporting villains were brainwashed loved ones, like Rie/Maria on Jetman or Mahoro/Jannu in Abaranger (or Karone/Astronema in Power Rangers), or decent people turned evil like Rouki in Gaoranger. It would've made for an interesting arc if it had been true.

More like an unseen first act to this episode, since it was the Jamenshi linked to the Jamenju that was featured here. I guess they got it out of the way offscreen so they could focus the story on Garuza.

Oh, that explains the random explosion behind them while they jumped in slow motion. ;)

But there was some intriguingly frenetic use of drone cameras and spinning viewpoints. I thought it might be the work of that director with a reputation for making viewers motion-sick.

Toei's global youtube channel is now online

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7pddu3yyzkzFEiXfQLex3w

Some have noticed there are few bugs to work out. The channel only has 60 of the 70 shows advertised. "Battle Fever J" is blocked virtually everywhere too.

"Kamen Rider Shin" for the first time I believe is subbed. During that time Kamen Rider was trying to emulate the horror that David Cronenberg's remake of "The Fly" had.

There's also Space Cop Gavan(The inspiration for Robocop)

Well that was fast. Toei's own copyright bots took down their own official channel LOL

Toei's upload of Gavan is victim of copyright... By Toei themselves

LMAO. Well it seems it will be an easy fix to get the Channel go back online at least ;) Looking forward to watch a plenty of these shows, especially the Winspector related ones eventually.

I'm not sure of that. Wikipedia says "In response to a lawsuit from Viacom, video sharing service YouTube developed a copyright enforcement tool referred to as Content ID which automatically scans uploaded content against a database of copyrighted material ingested by third-parties." So it sounds like it was YouTube's own safeguards that overreacted.

And it's weird, because I just watched Gavan episode 2 a short time ago. Although it's not as weird as Gavan itself. What a weird, weird show. Why does a space sheriff have a robot dragon spaceship? And why does he stand on its head rather than inside the ship where it's safer? And if the bad guys have a device powerful enough to make Earth spin backward on its axis just to open a portal to Makuu Space, isn't that a more devastating weapon to blackmail Earth with than any of their plots-of-the-week? And let's not talk about how the hijacked tanker in the first half of episode 2 inexplicably turned into an antique sailing ship in the climax.

The youtube channel is now back online. Might take a peek at Jiraiya

I think I'd rather go through the Metal Heroes shows in chronological order, if I bother to stick with them. Although I suppose it probably doesn't matter except for the groups that are directly linked, like the Space Sheriff trilogy and the later police/rescue trilogy. I gather Jiraiya was more self-contained (and is kind of a weird inclusion in Metal Heroes to begin with because he's a ninja rather than a tech-armored hero). And I am curious because I saw the character's return on Ninninger.

I'm also curious about Android Kikaider, since I saw the reboot movie and its tie-in episode on Kamen Rider Gaim.

I'm really interested in the channel, but with only three episodes subbed of most shows on there I probably won't be bothering with it much. I do like the idea a lot, though, and hope they expand upon it as time goes by. If they give me the ability to watch any of those shows all the way through, I'd definitely take advantage of it.

With a little help from the humagear in Kamen Rider Zero-One a classic Toei series is returning as a new movie. Humagear are the future of the new era!

https://tokusatsunetwork.com/2020/04/new-robocon-revival-movie-announced/

Ganbareiwa!! Robocon.

EUeBuhCUYAEEwbm.jpg

Created by Shotaro Ishinomori, Ganbare!! Robocon debuted in 1974, close to the debuts of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, and ran for 118 episodes until its end in 1977. The story follows the titular Robocon, a robot student at the Gantz’ Robot Academy that aids humans as part of his studies. He often makes mistakes, but tries his best for the sake of all robots.

It would be rebooted in 1999 as Moero!! Robocon, running until January 23rd 2000, one week before the premiere of Kamen Rider in the Heisei era.

The producer of this new film, Shinichiro Shirakura, had this to say about the new movie:

“Kamen Rider Zero-One, which depicts the world of working robots, was a stepping stone in reviving Robocon!”

I decided to try out Jiraiya after all. It's interestingly different from most tokusatsu I've seen, since it's focused more on human combatants and ninja intrigues than monsters or sci-fi weaponry (though there's a bit of that), and more on stunt work (fairly impressive so far) than special effects. There also seems to be less of the formula of destroying a foe at the end of every arc; the villains tend to retreat at the end rather than being killed, though not in every case. I guess that goes along with having mostly human villains. There's also a fairly strong female presence through Jiraiya's sister and a couple of kunoichi, and several characters with ambiguous agendas rather than straight-up good or evil. Might well be worth following.

Zero-one episode 30

This was a great episode. A lot of great character and character relationship moments. It's really sad to see people toss Humagear away though.

I thought Aruto's plan was funny and he actually looked clever. Thank you Security guard Mamoru.

I was hoping rising hopper would finish off Gai but obviously its no match and Aruto switched to Metal Cluster hopper

I thought Izu couldn't be backed up?

Did Gai get rid of Siesta? Probably just shut her down.

We also get some rider troopers in the form of A.I.M's members BattleRaiders. The key they're using is the Invading Horseshoe Crab key

Izu creating a loophole by quickly making another company was neat as well.

The Magia grunts were based off trilobites and horseshoe crabs are the closest living thing to them still alive today.

The fight choreography in this episode was actually really good for a change. I especially like Aruto closing the Attache Calibur to defend himself and spinning the thing around before opening it back up and unleashing his finisher. It's such a cool detail that's so fast you'd miss it if you weren't paying attention. Not to mention his Metal Rising Impact not only seemingly calling back to Faiz's finisher, but visibly throwing Thouser into a cliff was such a satisfying detail.

This was a really impressive episode -- a lot of drama, shifting allegiances, revelations, etc. I never expected to see Jin start to shift from enemy to ally, though I guess I should've seen it coming, since he always had kind of an innocent-waif quality. He's kind of reminiscent of Parado from Ex-Aid.

It took me a few minutes to notice that once Izu was reactivated, she referred to Aruto as "Aruto-san" rather than "Aruto-shachou" -- "Mister" rather than "President." But of course, as always, Izu turns out to be the real hero of the show, since it was her insights and choices that saved the day by creating a new company for Aruto to be president of, and establishing his right to the Zero-One Driver and associated tech. Interesting tightrope she's walking -- she still seems to be bound by her programming to be subservient to the president, but she chose to arrange things so that she would serve the president she preferred. So it's hard to say whether Gai was correct about her reaching Singularity.

Still disappointed by Yua, who remains complicit in carrying out Gai's worst orders. Fuwa is convinced she's being mind-controlled, but she insists she's acting of her own free will. I really hope they don't drag this out much longer before resolving the question. It does seem the long-term plan is to redeem her eventually, to convince her to break free of whatever influence she's under. Maybe that's why her worst actions are being done in Raider form, so as to save Kamen Rider Valkyrie as the form she reclaims upon her redemption.

I thought Aruto's plan was funny and he actually looked clever. Thank you Security guard Mamoru.

Except there's no way he could fit the data of (at a guess) tens of thousands of Humagears on his person, if there's one per Progrise Key. Also, who knew the keys were bulletproof? Well, I guess they have to be pretty robust to handle Kamen Rider combat.

I thought Izu couldn't be backed up?

I don't think that was a backup, I think that was her actual internal drive that Aruto was keeping safe until he could put it back in her head.

I, Rio Komiya, was discharged today, April 9th. I’m going to spend the next two weeks on standby at home.

I’m sorry for making my fans worry so much. I’m also sorry to those who were inconvenienced. I was incredibly encouraged by all of the warm messages from everyone supporting and looking forward to Kiramager. In particular, all of the kids who have always supported Kiramager. I received a lot of power and strength from the text messages and letters I got. Thank you!

I saw news of Fujinami (Shintaro Fujinami, the first Japanese pro baseball player to test positive for the Coronavirus) and I think seeing this allowed me to realize the symptoms I felt and made me able to convey my concerns.

In my case, my nose wasn’t clogged, but I could not smell or taste and it felt like everything I ate was solid. Even the bitter taste of coffee seemed like water. Although I had no fever, it became difficult to move my body, it was as if I was carrying heavy luggage. Even though I’m young, I was infected, so I hope this serves as a reminder that everyone is at risk of infection.

Everyone, please stay indoors, remember to wash your hands and gargle! Please wait just a bit longer and I’ll definitely be back as a healthy KiramaRed once again!

Kiramager episode 5

I noticed the Joystick Jamenshi phrase was paying homage to "Dekaranger"

"Aiming at your heart. Target Lock!"

This was an interesting way to keep an ongoing discussion about leadership (while the team is new and details are being sorted) and partners, without rehashing the previous debate exactly.

I'm confused as to why we have to "say red is the leader" and "fool Shovellow into believing red is a good leader" instead of letting red be a good leader or proving he's a good leader too. Seems like just another in the line of Kiramager ending with weird takeaway morals.

That doppelganger doll is really getting a workout

That was an interesting mecha fight with the claw of death though.

I'm surprised that we got voice actors for the auxiliary mashin. I don't know if we'll hear from them again outside of catchphrases

Tomorrow sees the return of Mammoth Ranger's actor from "Zyuranger"! and first focus episode for Sayo.

Another reasonably good character-driven episode. I'm glad they're giving the Mashin actual personalities and conflicts rather than just having them be catchphrase spouters like they were in the first couple of episodes. I think that was something I liked in Abaranger, Arakawa's first Sentai season as head writer, and it was also a strength of Go-Busters, and of Ryusoulger to an extent. However, the mecha's design this season doesn't lend itself well to giving them personalities, because they have no faces or anthropomorphic features. Not that I'd want a repeat of the goofy Engine designs from Go-onger, but it's hard to engage with a character that's just a wobbling rectangular prism or sparkly toy vehicle. The mecha designs work well enough as vehicles and robots, but not so much as characters. So that's a drawback.

The giant battle choreography this year is pretty clever, with some novel approaches to the action. Still, they did a remarkable amount of property damage this time. I hope the residents of those buildings that got uprooted had time to evacuate first, or else the Kiramagers killed a lot of people when they knocked away the buildings that were thrown at them.

Because this was Tametomo's episode. It wasn't a story about Jyuuru learning to be a leader, but about Tametomo coming to terms with not being one, and deciding to support the leader instead of just being resentful of him.

That doppelganger doll is really getting a workout

Yeah... on the one hand, it's good that they didn't just use it once and forget about it, but on the other hand, they're rapidly becoming too dependent on it.
