Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

And now Io9 has posted a short history and overview of the Kamen Rider franchise, starting with the first series and going up to Zero-One.
I hope we get more of them beyond just the first one. As curious as I am about the older show, I'm honestly more interested in the newer stuff. I'm a little nervous about sites that post stuff unofficially, so I'm kind of paranoid about watching stuff like Zero-One or Kiramager.
I'm planning on watching the next Jetman tomorrow. Do you guys mind if I continue posting my thoughts it on here, or should I start a separate thread?

It's neater than a bunch of threads on Kamen Rider/Sentai/ clogging up the threads. This is also General Tokusatsu discussion

Kamen Rider Zero-One episode 28

Things are certainly ramping up. I was worried about the black humagear. It could gone south real fast but it wasn't so bad. The rap was an interesting way once again to showcase all the past humagear and their duties

Big revelation about Fuwa. There was that one scene some eps back where Fuwa went into a deserted warehouse and then he was missing from the rest of the ep..

I wonder if Aruto really will lose his company

Oh damn. Why Yua? Her raidriser for looks modeled after Anubis

There was an interesting theory on reddit about the show

Yua lost her own agency, symbolized by her giving her Rushing Cheetah progrise key to Gai and becoming a dog for Zaia, with the Hunting Jackal key.

Fuwa lost his agency, which is central to his whole identity ("That's who Kamen Rider Vulcan is") by finding out that not only does he have an AI chip, basically making him a machine, but also revealing that he literally lost control of his own body due to that chip.

Aruto lost his agency with MCH, regaining it only to lose it again due to the public opinion making the future that he fights for almost impossible.

Talk about a darkest hour

Well, things have taken a turn for the worse, as one would expect in the penultimate episode of the arc. I've wondered for a while if we'd get to a point where Aruto lost the company. That might be close to happening. I wonder, would Aruto and Izu end up running an Underground Railroad for Humagears, fighting to save them from destruction?

The revelation that ShotRiser users need interface chips in their brains offers a possible new perspective on Yua's strange obedience to Gai. Perhaps that obedience is programmed in. Or at least she knows that it could be, that he could take control of her if she doesn't obey him voluntarily.

Valkyrie's Fighting Jackal Raider form is pretty cool, and she had some good moves, though as usual she was crowded out by the focus on Zero-One and Thouser. I wonder, since she's using a Raidriser, does this not actually count as a Kamen Rider form?

I followed my plan and watched episode 4 of Jetman, The Fighting Bride. I didn't enjoy this one quite a much as the others, watching it today, some of the stuff with Kaori felt a bit sexist. The stuff with her fiance did give her some nice character development, and it was nice to finally get a giant monster, and to see the Jetman team fighting together in their jets. I'm looking forward to getting to our first giant robot vs giant monster fight in the next one.

Kiramager episode 3

This was okay. Nice bit of continuity from episode 2 with Sena and the doppelganger plot.

A bit bummed that the MOTW this year are throwbacks to an earlier era of Sentai when they were super simple and cheap looking along with the Becha grunts. We do get a giant monster that is half related to the MOTW motif. This is a trait that "Go-busters" started. It's sort of a mix of new and old techniques.

They're really hammering home the dual roles for the team this year. Last week blue and pink had to leave for their jobs. This week Sayo needed to get back to the hospital. It adds a bit of realism that they can't be Kiramagers 24/7

Good debut for the five piece gattai of Kiramajin. The night time setting and lighted parts of Kiramajin really make the fights stand out

Kiramager episode 3

I quite liked this one. Some excellent character work. Shiguru's struggle to retain his stoicism was funny, and it was lovely the way Jyuuru found a way to simultaneously let him save face and convince him to step back and trust his teammates. That was a deft piece of writing.

I liked how the subtitle format changed when they cut to the "widescreen" movie shots.

Yeah, we've seen previous seasons that used giant robot duplicates of the human-sized kaijin rather than growing them -- Battle Fever J, Goggle V, Fiveman, Hurricaneger -- but those were exact duplicates, whereas the giant evil robots in Bioman and Dekaranger (and occasionally in Boukenger and Kyuranger) had no thematic relation to the kaijin that drove them. I guess Go-Busters was the first to have two simultaneous monsters with related but non-identical designs, and this is the second.

And it's a good idea, because it allows a greater variety to the action scenes, like the rather fun tug-of-war sequence here. So I'm glad to see it being used again.

I wonder if it's also for budgetary reasons, to save on actors' screen time.

Finally got to see the newest Garo movie today. It has a lot of the same problems that Raiga's series did, in terms of not really breaking new ground. But Raiga remains likable as all hell, if a tad dull, and Mayuri is divine as always. Plus, getting to see the whole Garo family go to town on the best villain the franchise has ever had didn't hurt any.

Man I love this franchise. Now to see if the new series is any good. Looks fairly radically different, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing at this point. And it can't be any worse than Jinga, which was just dull and unsatisfying despite it's lead.

I've heard of Garo since 2005. It's very mature with it's first episodes containing nudity. Japanese horror never appealed to me though.

It's like Tokusatsu if it was on HBO right?

Not nearly that extreme, no. There is a bit of nudity, as number of the female monsters are unclothed in addition to whatever weird makeup or cg effects are added, though it's rarely fanservice and feels a little less exploitative than it probably is. Also there is a very small bit of "blood," usually obviously cg'd into the scene after the fact. Honestly, I've seen worse violence in classic Kamen Rider. It's definitely not something you'd see adapted over here, but it's not like it's Game of Thrones or anything. If PR is the Fox X-Men films, Garo is more Logan than Deadpool, if you see what I'm saying.

It's tone definitely leans more horror than superhero. But the action is no less over the top than anything in Rider or Sentai. It tends to go a little bit more wire-fu than the others, and there is usually a lot of out of suit fighting. It also heavily uses CG for monster and suit action, which isn't always a strength though it's rarely so poorly done as to completely undercut the action.

The highlights are the monster designs, which are absolutely amazing. Very much horror inspired, as opposed to Sentai's more humanoid creatures. I love the world, or worlds I suppose given the various continuities. And at it's best it pushes a lot of buttons that work for me. Family, personal sacrifice and just a tiny undercurrent of romance.

Edit: As a point of comparison that may or may not be useful, Garo is far less graphically violent than something like Kamen Rider Amazons, for example. But it's definitely a little harder edged than the darker-leaning mainline KR series, like a Ryuuki or a Kabuto.

Kirameired's actor tested positive for corona, Kiramager shuts down production for at least a month.

Oh, hell. And I'd heard that Japan was keeping its infection rate pretty low because it's common to wear masks in public. It just goes to show that nowhere is completely safe. Well, I wish him health.

Anyone know how far along they were in production?

Just as an FYI, Season 1 of Beast Morphers is now available in its entirety on Netflix.

My watch-through of Ninja Steel was waylaid by some unforseen happenings in my personal life, and then I just kind of drifted into other stuff, but I finally got back to it and have watched up to Echoes of Evil, and I find it interesting that, pacing-wise, the season just sort of stayed Episodic and made a two-part "finale" out of two largely standalone stories. I also found it interesting how kind of underplayed Galvanax's defeat was compared to the last two times the franchise has gone with having the "big bad" defeated midway through the overall story.

I haven't actually watched Echoes of Evil yet, but it presents me with a conundrum in that, since Samurai, I've chosen to not consume the franchise's Holiday Special episodes because I find them to be "forced", and yet the fourth of said Specials for Ninja Steel resolves a story thread that Echoes of Evil introduces with regards to Sledge and his crew, leaving me torn on whether or not to watch it.

Thoughts?

For the Power Ranger adaptation of Ryuusoulger we could be headed back to highschool

Well, the first two dinosaur-themed PR series were high school-based. So it's in keeping with Ryusoulger's highly derivative nature.

To date, we've actually had far more PR seasons dealing with adult characters than we have with teenagers.

* MMPR/Zeo: HS-age teens
* Turbo 1st half: Adults (plus the younger Justin)
* Turbo 2nd half: HS-age teens (plus the younger Justin)
* PRiS: Adults
* PRLG: Adults
* PRLR: Adults
* PRTF: Adults
* PRWF: Adults (plus the younger Max)
* PRNS: HS-age teens (plus the older Cam)
* PRDT: HS-age teens (plus the older Tommy)
* PRSPD: Adults
* PRMF: HS-age teens (plus the older Nick, Daggeron, and Udonna)
* PROO: Adults
* PRJF: Adults
* PRRPM: Adults
* PRS/SS: Adults
* PRM/SM: HS-age teens (plus the older Orion)
* PRDC/DSC: Adults
* PRNStl/SNstl: HS-age teens (plus the older Levi)

Kamen Rider Zero-One episode 29

It was sad to see Aruto and Izu struggling to garner support for their cause even in the pouring rain

No opening credits. I guess they needed to pack as much as they could in this episode

Definitely got shades of Ex-Aid with an artificial intelligence laying dormant in a human with MBJ.net member Naki

It occurred to me that with Jackal and Vulcan that Gai treats Fuwa and Yaiba like his dogs

There was a plot convenience that Izu didn't just run away when Yaiba was attacking Aruto. We've
seen Izu have a "speed" mode. On top of that Yaiba slaps Izu!

So......Yaiba by sheer will just overcame a chip in his brain? That was an iffy part.

Rampage Vulcan was a beast. I loved the touch where the ground broke as he walked

Really hated Gai when he pushed Aruto's desk items to the ground

I wonder if Aruto will start his own company now.

We now enter a new arc/chapter of the series.....

Kamen Rider Zero-One episode 29

A really potent chapter ending. I figured we might see Aruto lose the company about midway through, but it was still effectively handled, with lots of drama -- though it's odd that in many ways the focus was more on Fuwa and Yaiba than Aruto. But there was a lot of movement for multiple characters.

For one thing, they finally started to address the question of why Yaiba is so obedient to Gai despite her clear inner conflict. Yet they only asked the question; the answer remains a mystery, and her continued submissiveness is still frustrating. Although I am glad they didn't go the simple route of having it just be the chip in her head.

It's surprising to see the Secondary Rider be the one getting the upgrade form that combines all the previous powers. There have been a couple of cases where Secondary Riders had fusion forms based on multiple powers associated specifically with them -- Wild Chalice in Blade and Grease Perfect Kingdom in Build: NEW WORLD -- but as far as I can tell, this is the first time a Secondary Rider has had a fusion/super form combining a large number of powers from multiple Riders.

It was pretty potent to see the climax come down to a direct threat to Izu's life, a fight to defend a main character, and one that I've grown so fond of. All she ever does is try to help and support, so it felt really cruel of Gai to order her destruction.

It was also really cool to see Aruto transform during his fight with Yaiba in Raider form, to start struggling with her and then henshin. It was hard to tell, but I think it's possible they did the "transformation" live -- Aruto was spun around to the right edge of the screen just before the flare of light of his henshin, so it's possible they did a quick handoff from the actor to the stunt double just offscreen and hid it with the flash of light.

From the preview, it looks like we're in for a time jump between 29 & 30.

It was sad to see Aruto and Izu struggling to garner support for their cause even in the pouring rain

Yeah, but it didn't make any sense. He's the president of a huge corporation! He can't buy some TV time to give his speech to more than a few people within earshot?

There was a plot convenience that Izu didn't just run away when Yaiba was attacking Aruto. We've
seen Izu have a "speed" mode.

She's also profoundly loyal to Aruto. I figure she was just reluctant to leave him.

So......[Fuwa] by sheer will just overcame a chip in his brain? That was an iffy part.

But that's his whole deal, isn't it? Overcoming resistance through sheer force of will, like how he forces his Progrise Keys open. It's his theme.
