Has George Samuel Kirk been Chucked?

Kirk (in the original timeline) may well have called George Junior "Sam" to distinguish him from his father. Indeed, I share my father's name, and have been known by my middle name since birth. I didn't even know my first name until the first day of Kindergarden, then the teacher called someone with my last name at roll call.

Since in the alternate timeline, George Senior is dead, Junior is the only George Kirk left.

As for the "I lost a brother" line in Star Trek V, I see that as an oversight on the writers. They simply forgot about Kirk's older brother George - I mean Sam - I mean... well, you know what I mean!

Kirk's line in TFF doesn't preclude him having lost another brother that he didn't get back, either.

I wish my parents would have been so wise as to give me a middle name, as I share my father's name, too (we're both Michaels). Although I must say that there never have been any problems, since my father is called Micha while I am called Michi (I hate that nickname).

...You don't have a middle name? (And what's wrong with Michi?)

At least you don't have an embarrassing middle name... :shifty:

Until he went in the Army (and had to get his birth certificate), my dad thought his middle name was Julius - naming him that had been his parents' intention. No offense to any other Juliuses out there, but let's just say he was not enamored of that name. He in fact loathed it. So when he found out that somebody had forgotten to include Julius on the birth certificate, he was delighted. For the rest of his life he went happily by Firstname (no middle name) Lastname.

What was the OP again? Oh, that's right - Sam Kirk. Yes, I've known lots of people who went by their middle name, either to prevent confusion, to avoid being "Firstname Jr." or "little Firstname," or because they just liked their middle name better.

Edit: There was a middle name thread in Misc. a few weeks back. Stuff moves fast in Misc., but it might still be there. I can't remember if Praetor reported his or not - I did, though. But then, I like my middle name. ;)

Good idea, but he's not in this one, Marie. :(

I would. "We're with Starfleet. We don't lie."

...or, better yet, "As a Vulcan, I am incapable of lying."

:)

Snip

...So now three full names coined by Vonda McIntyre in her Trek novels have become onscreen canon in the movies: Hikaru Sulu, George Kirk (Sr.), and Winona Kirk.

Except Vonda McIntyre got the name Hikaru from the series bible written by Gene Roddenberry. Not to mention the same series bible said that Uhura's first name is Penda, not Nyota, so getting Nichelle's approval is moot.

None of that is remotely true. I've read the series bible. My copy of the series bible is in my lap as I type this. The characters are identified only as "SULU" and "LIEUTENANT UHURA."

McIntyre did indeed coin the name Hikaru in her 1981 novel The Entropy Effect. Prior to that, the favorite conjectural first name for Sulu in fan circles was "Walter." "Penda" was also a fan conjecture, supplanted when William Rotsler coined "Nyota" and popularized it in the book Star Trek II Biographies.

Then how do you explain George Takei at the Denver Star Trek convention in 1990 telling me and a crowd of 3000+ that GR had told him during production of TOS that Sulu's name was on paper as being 'Hikaru'? I'll take GR over Vonda McIntyre and William Rostler any day. It was his baby.

Gene lied to George? (Well, maybe not "lied." BS'd in the classical Great Bird tradition, more like.)

Or, George might have lied. But I can't think of anything... well, anything that he's been caught lying about directly. :p
