Has Anyone Ever Regretted Getting a Cat?

Kestra, my husband and I were in a similar situation last year. I begged and pleaded for a kitten, and he was reluctant. He finally conceded around Christmas. I got my cat, Violet, in January. We bought her at PetSmart, which got her from the shelter, and she was two months old at the time. Now we both love Violet as if she were our child. Honestly, I think my husband may love her just a bit more than he loves me.

Just be aware that kittens have two modes: asleep and crazy. No in-between. :) However, we had a little room for her to sleep in (and she still sleeps in there, with her food and water and toys and litterbox), so that helps us when we can't keep her under constant supervision.

Like everyone has said, cats have different personalities, but Violet is mischievous and needs a lot of supervision. We can't just leave her alone for hours at a time because she'll find something to mess with. She has never been destructive, but she likes to get on surfaces and knock stuff down, so I can't have much in the way of decorative items on tables or shelves. That's the only regret I have, but I certainly wouldn't trade her for the ability to decorate flat surfaces.

Thanks for all the personal stories, guys. I know every cat (or any animal at all) has a different personality and the stories here are good examples of that. One of the reasons for getting a cat now is that my husband works from home and so could take care of a kitten in a way that we couldn't if we were both out of the house full-time.

I came home today and told him he could get a cat. And his response was "This is a trick, right? What do you want?"

My friend kidnapped a friend of his cat. I tried to get him to keep it the owners are assholes. Anyways the cat was in the house for like 4 hours, my friend stuck some winter sand down (no salt of course) and the cat found it within minutes. That is because cats are much smarter than dogs.

I find it funny that I dated someone last month who will be 20 in January, he is only one year older than my cat would have been. People still don't seem to understand why I love my cat.

^ Hmm yeah, my one thing is the timing ... we could probably find a semi-out of the way spot for a litter box but either way that's not going to help us sell our house.

If you'ri trying to sell the house, it might be a wise idea to wait until you get a new place. Mind you, not necessarily settled in and unpacked, but at least until you get the new place.

Don't discount adopting an older cat. Kittens are cute and all, but like children, older animals (dogs or cats) get passed over at adoption time. They have just as much love to give and just want a warm, dry home.

We've had our Cat now for over three years and no, we don't regret it. Don't get me wrong she can be difficult at times, fussy, moody, attention seeking but it wouldn't be the same without her.

(though cats catch on to potty training much quicker than dogs do).

It's actually kind of eerie how quickly they catch on.

I found a month-old kitten roaming around and brought it inside my apartment for an evening. It found my current cat's litter box within 5 minutes.

Yeah, when my family got two kittens a long time ago, we just went to the neighbor's house, got some kitty litter, put it in a cardboard box, and they started using it right away.

Kestra, my suggestion would be to get a kitten. I know that might sound a bit selfish (and it probably requires more work), but they're very adorable to start with and then they grow to get used to your personality (and you to its).

Oh, and cats do hate moves. If you are moving soon, I would recommend waiting until after to get the cat.

Cats hate it when the furniture has been rearranged as well. My Calico goes nuts, especially when I've kicked her out of the house for a couple of hours and rearrange the living room

I had to replace my nasty second hand couch, and I got a sweet deal at the furniture store for a couch/ loveseat combo.

But they were about 6 inches higher off of the floor. The cats were PISSED when the guys delivered them. In fact, Beverly hid under the old couch, and when they lifted it up they found her hiding place.

She was too fat to jump up on the new furniture and I had to pick her up and put her on it. They sulked for about a month until they realized they liked the new stuff better.

I have four cats, all male. They are the best.:)

I love it when they are running around the house and they start growling at each other.

If you want the responsibility get one.You will not regret it.

Cats puke. They just do. And they shed, and they generally like to cuddle only when it's inconvenient for you. Vet care is expensive. But they are sweet, intelligent little animals. If you can deal with the occasional puke cleanup and some extra vacuuming, and have money to burn on medical necessities as they age, then a cat is a great, low-maintenance pet. I have two of them.

Vet care is pretty minimal for a cat I've found. We just take ours in once a year for his annual checkup. Nowhere near as expensive as dog ownership.

I like cats well enough, but wouldn't be upset if I didn't own one. The one we have now is unfriendly and will bite you for no good reason if he feels like it. He has no interest in playing or spending any time around you. We just got a clunker.

Ya, we had a cat once... ONCE..... He kept biting my sons feet.. So i took that little fucker for a ride..
