Harsh Realities of Rewatching Deep Space Nine

To stay a bit in the whining spirit of the original 'harsh realities' threads ...
(please don't take these too seriously) ;)

1.. Not all episodes were equally great. In fact, some were mediocre, or downright silly, and on rare occasions even offensive (Profit and Lace)!
2. While DS9 is known for its political nuances, the last season degenerated into 'cosmic fight between Good and Evil' territory, complete with onedimensional red-eyed Gul Dukat madman...
3. Were the series made today, there would be an outrage on social media about Vedeks not respecting aural integrity. #myeartoo !
4. So what did those wormhole aliens want with Bajor or Sisko? We never found out and this is arguably one of the most important points of the series!

Most of my issues with "Deep Space Nine" are similar to my issues with "Next Generation" and "Voyager". However, I must add that I honestly disliked how the show dealt with the Dominion War during Seasons 6 and 7. I thought Dukat's portrayal had evolved into a dumpster fire and the Mirror Universe episodes had gradually declined in quality by the last three seasons or so.

In a real fight to the death I think Worf would have beaten Jadzia, but in a practice fight, Worf restrains himself more than Jadzia.

Worf can take more damage, too. Even though he's down to one synaptic system, he still has three lungs, an eight chambered heart, and lot of other useful Klingon redundancies.

I think that was shown in the series finale, the dialogue was something like this:
WORMHOLE ALIEN WHO ONCE TURNED SISKO'S BIOLOGICAL MUM INTO IT'S MEATSUIT: Can you take this book and throw it down that hole?
THE SISKO: Sure, why not.
DUKAT: No, stop. That book is the key to the Pah Wraith prison and if you throw it down that hole then they won't be able to escape. Except that time one used Keiko's body and escaped.
THE SISKO: Couldn't I send in a bomb disposal robot to do this job, but like one with big guns and a bomb? Or just level this entire cave with a phaser strike from orbit? And then use a version of that Prophet killing weapon that Fake-o was building in that episode?
WORMHOLE ALIEN WHO ONCE TURNED SISKO'S BIOLOGICAL MUM INTO IT'S MEATSUIT: No.
THE SISKO: Fair enough.

Granted, some episodes were better than others, but there was not one episode that I didn’t like. Profit and Lace was great, it was the “threshold” episode of deep space nine… I think Bashir directed that one. I could not stop laughing. Plus, Henry Gibson was in it. Sluggo Cola! This is Mad Magazine material we are getting into, It was hilarious.

there were other instances where Kosst Amogan “escaped”, One of them took over Jake, but that was for a shootout between wormhole aliens on the promenade. Kai Ratchet interfered with that, otherwise, the show would have ended right then and there. And then Dukat broke open that Kosst Amogen action figure and became possessed by it, but that one used Dukat to get into the Orb and ultimately into the celestial temple, Killing Jadzia on the way…

and I would not say that the one that took over Keiko had actually “escaped“, otherwise, they would have been able to move back-and-forth between people. I think whenever they quote possess” a person they are stuck there until they decide to go back into the fire cave, or the book or try to get into the celestial temple.

also…

WORMHOLE ALIEN WHO ONCE TURNED SISKO'S BIOLOGICAL MUM INTO IT'S MEATSUIT:

-HAHAHAHAHA!!!

It would have been nice to see the Federation deal with the consequences of "In the Pale Moonlight" and/or the attempted genocide against the Founders. And I could have done without the issue with Gowron that popped up in Season 7, or the whole mess with Dukat and Kai Winn.

I’m not really clear on this “Harsh Reality” thing. To me the only harsh reality I know is how old I feel from when DS9 Aired. With all this new trek I remember that time fondly and that was 30 years ago. It was exciting, fun, and I didn’t know about social media to the point where I saw Ben Sisko and thought he was the coolest character ever and his sparring with Picard was just two people having a disagreement, especially when one of them couldn’t get over the death of his wife. It wasn’t until later when I saw it was controversial but to me it was purely human nature.

I saw “Profit and Lace” partly as a Bugs Bunny cartoon at points. And honestly, Quark was experiencing some payback.
As for the rest, Dukat going full on villain was fine with me. He was never going to be sorry for what he did.

Yeah I'm not sure what this "Harsh Realities" series of threads is for. List bad things about each series, and what? Am I to stop liking the series? Stop watching them? Well, I like watching TOS and DS9, and I'm gonna keep watching them.

It's satire. The others are for concern and, apparently, misogyny.

Mmm. Have to agree that DS9 had a lot of misses. I never quite got into Avery Brook's scenery-chewing acting style, and the resolution of the Pa Wraith material was just "blecch".

(On the upside, it inspired me to create a comic book that resolves DS9 the way I want it to!)

I really disliked the Pa Wraith story arc. It's one of the reasons why I never liked Season 7 in the first place.

DS9 made way fewer missteps than Voyager, but it made a few. Can't decide which is lamer...
1. Building up a fascinating culture in the Ferengi... then demolishing it.
2. Introducing Section 31... then having Sisko decide to do the exact sort of job they would do only one episode later.

Although I am most easily replaced by AI, I am a real person. But go ahead, have fun in your responses.

AI is still too busy saying one of the best Atari 2600 games is Pac-Man, despite the decades'-old infamy accorded that game's reaction to the general public... Okay, 2600 Pac-Man is actually playable, and some - including me - actually liked it as a kid, but we're not all "mainstream", whatever that is. Mainstream customers hated it so bloody much that the "no refunds" policy was introduced as a result, and any 2600 Pac-man, complete in box, with the 4"-diameter, big-*** "no refunds" sticker on the flap, on auction sites, fetches an amusingly high price because that is the genuienly rare one! :guffaw:

I don't agree. DS9, VOY and TNG are my three favorite Trek shows. But if I must be honest, I believe all three had its set of flaws that made it impossible for me to decide which was the best among them. I thought DS9 could have been the best, but the writing made it hard for me to accept that in the end.

I do think Deep Space Nine has faults including that the Dominion was pretty much just the 3 big species (and with the Vorta nearly just Weyoun and the Founders nearly just the one Female Founder) and that the writers got pretty bored with and abandoned the internal situation/developments on Bajor aside from Winn personally going from bad to worse and worse. And that Sisko's controversial decisions were generally not exposed or backfired is at least a missed opportunity.
