Happy Singles Awareness Day, everyone!

Many of us guys are conditioned to NOT give chocolate. If we do, we run the risk of being accused of 1) thinking our girlfriends or wives look fat, or 2) trying to make them BE fat. :shifty:

Are you saying my husband didn't give me chocolate because he thinks I'm fat??!? :wah:

No according to MLB logic, if he DID give you chocolate it would be because he thought you looked fat.

Cause that makes perfect sense.

Especially since there is nothing actually romantic about Valentine's Day, which is just an excuse to sell candy and cards and flowers. Real romance is 24/7/365.

Funnily enough, 24th of July 365 AD occurred at the time of Roman emperor Valens. So it was literally Valens's time. :bolian:

I am available for weddings, funerals, christenings and bar mitzvahs. :D

Zion Ravescene... and here I thought all those hours on Wikipedia had served me well. That was crazy and I never knew.

Destroyer of worlds, indeed.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone. :adore:

The Warnings for creepy behavior will be handed out shortly. You know who you are. ;)

Ladies, feel free to get all creepy on me. ;)

You shouldn't be hotlinking. It's a Warnable offense.

So to combat the dreaded "Hallmark Holiday" I have chosen to celebrate an alternative to love, Science Fiction. Instead of idolizing a single simple human emotion, I like honoring the drive and endurance of the human spirit, our indelible quest to obtain knowledge and understanding of our universe, and ultimately ourselves. So, when the rest of you pass around chocolates and cards, I choose to celebrate the ideas and ground-breaking themes of Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein, Bradbury, Sagan and Vern. I watch or read about Flash Gordon, Superman, Buffy, Robbie the Robot, Kirk, Spock, Morpheus, Deckard, Doctor Who, Muad'Dib, Ellie Arroway, Doc Brown, John Sheridan, Wonder Woman, Mal Reynolds and Luke Skywalker.

I also find it a great time to indulge myself in the most horrible third rate SciFi films, a little low-brow to go with the high-brow.

Recently I have been seriously considering creating a website to help the newbies celebrate the day properly and to get the word out. It would include e-cards, movie and book lists and a wealth of historical information on the subject. I would love to make SciFi day as popular as Festivus!

So... HAPPY SCIENCE FICTION DAY!
That's fantastic. I actually have a section on my store devoted to Sci Fi Day (which I forgot to open this year-- I blame the flu). :alienblush: Keep me updated on that website idea; I'd love to see it and even help out.

I used to date this one girl that hated Valentine's Day. I mean she loathed it. So I would buy her flowers on the 15th. While she still didn't exactly like that, she would at least accept the gesture.

On a different note, today is my Mom's birthday.

I do agree with the sentiment that Valentine's Day is hideously commercialized, which is why I usually make whatever gifts I'm giving for it. I think a small, thoughtful gift is a lot more meaningful than just dropping a couple hundred bucks on something flashy.

I hope someone fertile marries you and together you produce dozens of children to keep these sentiments alive into the next generation.

That probably sounds creepier than it should but I'm very tired.

But you told me I was sensitive. :(

Yes you are a sensitive flower and I love you too. And I think we've scared everyone off from this thread.
I'm sensitive too, Dimitri. I'm very sensitive. Alright, you're more sensitive than I am. But I’m sensitive as well. I am as sensitive as you are, Dimitri. Don't say that you’re more sensitive than I am, because I am capable of being just as sensitive as you are. So we're both sensitive, alright? Alright!

BTW, at first I thought this thread was about “Shingles Awareness Day.” Great, another disease-charity-of-the-month.

Hey, I'm trying. I've already got a few kids.

Herpesviridae were bound to get a mention sooner or later in such a thread as this... and rather appropriately, the day after. :D

If you dislike Valentine's Day, be happy that there is still just the one day devoted to it, unlike in Japan where it has somehow become two separate days, the regular Valentine's Day (when women give gifts to men they like) and "White Day" (when the men give gifts to the women, but only if they themselves received a gift on Valentine's Day).
That sounds... complicated.

Are we going to get a shingles forum?
Yesh.
That shounds... Scottish.

Anyone with the vaguest interest in nerd humour should watch Day9's Valentine's Day Funday Monday. I just finished watching the archived copy and it's comedy gold. Skip the Starcraft bits, if they're not your thing (they're not even any good in this video); just listen to his hilarious dating stories.
