Happy Back to the Future day!

I find it hard to think of them as anything but all one movie - but it's pretty hard to make a case for Part I not being the best. It is simply a cinematic masterpiece. Part III is special to me as it becomes Doc's story.

On Wednesday I found myself very aware of the local time that Doc and Marty would be arriving*. I've been watching that film for years and years and knew roughly where they were at which point in the day. According to the film, they arrive in 2015 at 4:29pm when they land and do the switcheroo with Marty McFly Jr. Maybe all that lasts about an hour, hour and a half tops. Then they take the jammed skyway out to Hilldale to retrieve Jennifer (love that plot excuse to see Marty's future home!) and ultimately end up leaving 2015 at 7:28pm, for a total of 2h59m spent in the future, in stark contrast to the week spent in 1955 and 1885 respectively. *(Ignoring time zones of the original being in California)

Anyway, yeah I was busy obsessing over that on Wednesday. It was fun.

The great thing about Part 3 is something that is lost on a lot of big budget movies now: The big action set piece at the end where everything has to work to get back to the future.. everything was built up so well. Every single shot, every damn frame, helped to tell that story, and there wasn't a wasted frame in that whole scene. Nothing gratuitous. Zemeckis and his team worked hard to create an action scene that is so focused and I think it is lost on the filmmakers today.

Word. Same with any of the jokes and such. They all played into the story as a whole. That's in part why the films still hold up as well as they do imo.
