In the film, there was a number of references to 'them' - the tormentors of John and Mary who appeared whenever either of them weakened. Who were 'they' supposed to be?
It was heavily implied that "they" were just the normal humans who were jealous or terrified of the powers they possessed, and/or those they had punished in the past. Much like what we see in the movie with Hancock's "arch-nemesis" coming back to try and kill him and the public as a whole calling for his head.
Them refers to the racist folks in the south when Hancock got hurt and lost his memory. They got messed with because they where an interracial couple in florida(IIRC) in the 30's. Very bad idea at the time.
