The High Evolutionary might be the most hateable villain in a movie since RoboCop.

Thanos at least seemed to feel bad about what he did.
They pointed in different directions…

What Rocket said in sparing The High Evolutionary shows we all rage at how things should be rather than how they are.

That or he read Brin’s uplift series one too many times…

So while it probably won't hit what the previous two made, the movie has already shot past Ant-Man III's lifetime total by about $50m and looks like it will finish up safely in the black. What a difference positive word-or-mouth makes.

Saw it Friday night 7:30 during the NBA playoffs expecting a near empty theater. Nope. Full.

I enjoyed it. Great send off for them. The music didn't quite hit like the previous two movies. By now it felt forced somehow.

I know some folks can't wait for the 'next one' but I'm hoping this is it. No more GotG. Gunn is gone and he really had the heart of those movies. Disney/MCU would try to make it all 'jokey'(bad humour) with none of the heart like what we've seen recently(Thor, Ant-Man, etc....).

That some of these characters will appear here and there is inevitable, especially newly introduced Adam, but these characters' story has been told. Finito. A great way to end.

I think the reason why the music doesn't work as well this time is because the first two movies really made the music feel integrated into the story with the whole concept of Peter's walkman and how obsessed he is with the music on it. Even when the walkman wasn't in the scene, it still felt like it should be because it's literally the core of Peter's character. The issue in Vol. 3 is that Peter's character is both way less central and also so depressed that the music doesn't really feel like a part of him anymore, which kind of kills the integration and makes the music feel like just any other musical cue from any random film. With the main exception being the opening song, which actually works really well because it does do exactly what the first two movies did, only with Rocket instead of Peter, but then Rocket is unconcious for the next 45 minutes and that leaves the music hanging.

That was pretty good. Better than 2, not as good as 1.

I was very bummed that Gamora and Peter did not get together…until they showed her returning home to her people. That was incredibly well done.

The post credit scene was total WTF?

Five stars, no notes. We are Groot!

Seriously though I loved it. The best MCU film in a long time. Funny, exciting, heart-breaking, tense, life affirming.

The only negative I'd give it is that the soundtrack wasn't anywhere as near as good as the others. I didn't even feel like Adam was tacked on and it's always good to see Will Poulter (who my GF still refers to as Son of Rambow)

Just wonderful. Marvel really need to find a new Gunn.

I don't recall if I mentioned this when I posted my thoughts....

But I do agree that not all the song worked. Even songs I love by themselves, felt odd during scenes. I did love the use of No Sleep Till Brooklyn!

Saw it today.

Agree that it was better than 2 but a far cry from 1. Gunn did take the story full circle, and to full closure while leaving the door open for future endeavors. Could have knocked off about 20-30 min and not lost anything along the way, I think.

Enjoyed it. Most of the music was good for me but there were a couple misses. I can't say my opinion differs greatly from most of the reviews I've read here and other places.

Even though the film is Rocket's story first and foremost, every single Guardian member has a touching story that neatly ties up each of their character arcs, while leaving the door open for further adventures. Naturally, Peter's story weighed the heaviest between him trying desperately to reconnect with Gamora after her continuous (and understandable) rejections, while also finally realizing he needed to go back to Earth and rekindle his relationship with grandfather, Jason.. It was a difficult story to unfold but I'm actually really grateful James Gunn allowed Peter to accept the new state of his relationship with this version of Gamora and have him move on from that drive for romance with her.

The rest of the core members had their own satisfying conclusions to their stories, particularly Nebula who finally was able to find peace after her lifelong traumas by becoming the new caretaker of Knowhere with all of the humanoid and animal orphans. Drax likewise was able to move on from his vengeful Destroyer title to return his fatherly roots when he demonstrated he wasn't a simpleton but a man with a good heart deep down. And I love how Mantis was able to push back finally against the continuous putdowns from both Drax and Nebula and decided to go off on her own to find her oneself, separate from others who sought to control her, for better or for worse. While smaller story arcs, even Groot, Kraglin (with a Yondu cameo!), and Cosmos all have their wonderful character beats that brought smiles to my face.

While I enjoyed the vast majority of the film, I have to admit (to my honest surprise) that Ravager Gamora felt like the weakest link. I felt like that was one area that dropped the ball, since this is a somewhat different Gamora than the one who was killed off by Thanos to get the Soul Stone. I think it's perhaps fair to say she's developed a personality more similar to early Nebula, but for my part I felt like that didn't work very well. It doesn't mesh with her history and personality as we've seen it in the prior movies, and we don't get enough background on her membership with the Ravagers to justify it. By contrast, elements like Nebula still being a dick but also learning how to show genuine joy and affection feel more earned (to me). I think also the film would have benefited more from actually exploring the awkwardness of having to deal with a different Gamora (for Peter especially, but also for the other Guardians) vs. basically just showing us the after effects.

It's kind of like how this version of Groot is clearly not the same one from the first Guardian film, he's been reborn and evolved in new ways, but he still has some of the essential aspects that fit the character. I was kind of surprised to hear him actually speak normal English at one point, but it worked in the context of that scene. :D

Yeah, it took my off guard for a second because none the Guardians reacted. But I realized, the Guardians always hear what he says. Gamora in this movie doesn't, untill the end. In that line, he basically still says I Am Groot. But we the audience can now, just like the Guardians, understand him. We're part of the family now too.

Got to see this yesterday. LOVED IT.

It felt odd at first. Slow, and the focus being so heavily on Rocket as opposed to Quill. But the steady ramp up into the action and the emotional pay offs at the climax really earned it. This was the best use for Drax in any of the films thus far.

Somehow Rocket's back story was even more tragic than I imagined it. The themes of being trapped in the past and unable to let go of your pain really resonated throughout.

My only real disappointment was Adam. Not sure what I expected, but it wasn't what we got. I feel like Gunn only included the character because he felt pressured to, and not because he had anything to say with him. He was a dumb gag, who never really went anywhere. The only beat that really landed was the last one, when Groot gives him his second chance and then he takes it and becomes a hero.

And, final thought: Cosmo really was a good dog.

Yeah, I saw that yesterday. I saw Gunn's explanation for why they cut the scene showing he survived, but I'm still surprised they chose to cut it, it's kind of a big thing to leave out.

The soundtrack had to change itself…the 80’s were over like the trilogy is over…thus the wistful look as Rocket went into 2000s music.

Change is in the air.
