I just saw "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2". I was very impressed by the strong characterizations in the movie and how it emotionally developed the main characters.
On the other hand, I was not that impressed by the plot. I found it rather lame in compare to the 2014 film. Despite the weak narrative, I still managed to enjoy it. I gave it a "B" for the characterizations.

Aside from Ego consuming planets, the CGI in this film was fantastic. I especially liked the CGI work on Rocket Raccoon.
Of the main characters, Rocket Raccoon and Yondu were the ones who benefitted the most in this film when measuring character growth. The worst? Drax. Yep, he was humorous; however, he did not have much growth. (The newer characters, like Mantis and Ayesha, were not developed much. They were there for the plot. Maybe the next film will see these characters grow.)
The small details, like the Sovereign's appearance on Contraxia being marred by a glitch in the roller, fleshed out this universe. And, for someone who has been wanting to see drones in space combat in the movies and having only the dismal Star Wars Prequels, with their poor characterization of drones, it was wonderful to see the drone fleet in this movie.
My favorite song is the Wham Bang by Silver (the Sovereign fleet's appearance at Ego's Planet). Least favorite is Inferno (end credits).
Though some have described this moment as "pedantic", I enjoyed Ego's interpretation of the song Brandy. I like it when characters comment on something cultural, like this song or Bill's views on Superman from Kill Bill Vol. 2

The villain in this one was very well done and made memorable as opposed to the villains in most of the other MCU movies.
I know, it was a simple parapractic typo.
I loved the movie.
That Ego was the bad guy was pretty predictable and the music was less awesome in my opinion.
And I feel a little bad for the Sovereign, who didn't start the incident but lost a lot of ships because of it

That was a lot of fun. Some awkward moments where the pace screeched to a halt to have an exposition-fest, and that funeral at the end was dragged out way too long. But I liked the characters and I liked the action, and I was pissing myself laughing at several points. I think my favourite part was the whole 'has anyone got any tape?' bit.
It's still absolutely Farscape, though. I know it's based on comics that came way before Farscape but there are so many things that are the same that these movies are basically Farscape on the big screen. I can only assume that casting Ben Browder in a bit part was a tacit acknowledgement that they are aware of the similarities.

I absolutely agree on Pierce and I found Cross to be very interesting - certainly better than most people seem to give him credit for. I also really enjoyed Baron Zemo, as well. Nevertheless, I do tend to agree that Ego may very well be the best one-off villain so far.
Loki, of course, is far from a one-off.
The team of Guardians from the movie was put together in the comics in 2008, well after Farscape. However, I think the Farscape connection comes more from the choices and style made in the movies than the comics.

SHH: This is a shot in the dark, but did “Farscape” inspire this movie in any way? Because I see a lot of that show in this movie, both in Peter Quill and in the way that the universe is presented.
Gunn: Well actually, people ask me about every show you can imagine. They ask me about every single science fiction show, but Farscape is about the only one… The only science fiction shows that I think I ever really watched were “Farscape” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

The movie was very good. I'm someone who thought that GotG was very good, but not spectacular or the best of the MCU like some people. I think this movie blew the first out of the water. Everything was better, from the characters to the villain to the story and the humor. I cared about basically everyone, there were some surprisingly emotional moments that worked very well (the only really emotional moment in the first movie for me was Peter's Mom dying).
The movie managed to make Yondu and Nebula into characters I really enjoyed, after being neutral toward them in the first movie, and part of that was getting more backstory and characterization from them, along with just some great action and funny moments. Yondu dying as a hero and the realization that he was basically
Peter's dad (and that he hadn't been a bad guy to keep Peter in the first place) was a very well done emotional scene. Same with nebula and her reveal about what thanos did to her and how she just wanted a sister.Mantis was fine, she had a few good moments but didn't have all that much.
The main cast got some good stuff. Peter and his Dad worked great, both when they were having fun and when Ego was revealed as a villain who killed Peter's Mom. Drax got some great lines, I wish he'd gotten a bit more be3cause of how great all his stuff was. Gamora's relationship with Nebula was great, all their stuff together was very entertaining. Rocket was another character that got some very funny moments and some heartfelt character development. Groot was the only one that really didn't get anything. He wasn't as actively irritating as I expected, he even got a laugh from me when he brought that toe to Rocket and Yondu. But he was mostly pointless, and it was his stupidity that annoyed me more then them trying to make him "cute". He could have been completely removed and not have effected the movie (his only useful scene could have been changed easily). Hopefully he's adult Groot in Infinity War/GotG 3.
Ego was a great villain. I kind of figured he'd be evil, but what exactly he had done and what his plan was surprised me. When he admits to killing Peter's Dad and Peter just freaked out was a great scene. Kurt Russel played the character well, and he was easily one of the best "one-shot" villains in the MCU. I wish we'd seen him as a face on the planet (they kind of hinted at it, but didn't really commit), but besides that he worked very well.
Talking about some other leftover stuff, Stallone was interesting. He didn't get much, but he was ok and I liked his mid-credits scene (I hope that team shows up in GotG 3). The credit scenes were interesting. The reveal of Adam warlock was great, I never expected it even though the movie set up the gold aliens as genetic scientist who give birth through pods, which should have been a blatant reference. Teenage Groot was ok, I mostly just hope its leadi ng to adult Groot again. My favorite mid-credits scene (and in-movie cameo) is Stan Lee and the watchers. I didn't think that Marvel had the rights to the Watchers, so seeing them and Stan Lee was amazing. i especially like Lee mentioning his cameo from Iron man (2 or 3), probably connecting all Stan Lee cameos (in the MCU at least) as actually being one character. Howard the Duck's in movie cameo was also fun.
So, overall, this was a great movie. Not quite my favorite MCU movie, but easily a top 5 and maybe top 3 or 4.

Just saw it It was good but not better then the fist one. For some reason toward the end of the movies it reminded me of Star Trek V! If you seen the movie you probably no what I am referencing.
Ah, thanks for sharing that! I also wondered about possible Farscape influence. Seems safe to say now that Ben Browder's cameo was a deliberate nod.

I think I liked it more than the first. Ego was a much better antagonist. Actually, he's one of my favorite Marvel bad guys to date. The humor was really good. Loved all the cameos and post credit teases. The soundtrack was excellent. Some eye rolling speeches, but bearable. All around, just a better movie.

IMO - MUCH better that the first installment (which I thought was okay overall, but wasn't very enthused about.) This one had a good balance of seriousness, humor, and outright silliness at times; but (IMO) they balanced it all out well - and the result was a VERY entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable film.

I was sorry to see they killed the Yondu character 
; LOVED how they've now actually put the 'Watchers' into the Marvel Cinematic Universe; and also LOVED the MCU take on the MAD Living Planet, Ego. And I have to wonder how many old Marvel fans got the Adam reference at the end? I remember when they first introduced 'Him' in the Fantastic Four comics back in the 1960ies - and had to explain it to the other people why I laughed and whispered "Wow, okay know we know where the Soul Infinity stone will come from...", when they had the line, and Adam's Sarcophagus appeared on screen.

However - Ego, been portrayed and insane since he first appeared in Thor comics (again back in the 1960ies). For me, this film was the first time they showed him taking a human form, and I'd avoided all spoilers for the film before seeing it, so when I first saw the character in Human form, I was like - "WTF are they doing here because the only 'Ego' I remember from Marvel WAS the 'Mad Living Planet'?..." - so once they got to the 'planet' and Ego started explaining his 'origin' - I was like, "Okay, I get it now; I'll bet Peter's mother's cancer was CAUSED by Ego himself, and he's going to reveal whatever insane reason he had for conceiving a child; and Peter and the other Guardians will unite to defeat it in some way -- and yeah, that was pretty much it -- but again, it worked for me - paid homage to the character and it's history quite well. YMMV.

Something I was just thinking about, I hope that the Zune doesn't ruin the soundtrack for GotG 3 (which I'm sure we're going to get). By that I mean I hope they don't just go "Now that he has more then a couple of old cassette tapes, let's fill the in movie soundtrack with stuff like rap, dubstep, death metal, country, generic modern pop hit #4567", etc. The music of the first two movies has added to their personality and has been generally enjoyable, so I hope they don't just go modern now (and not just because I generally loathe 99% of music made since probably a decade before I was born).
