Doesn't the tape deck built into the ship prove that he went back, or at least had some contact w/Earth after he was beamed up? He only had the Walkman with him. And integrating it into the ship means he might have modified the Walkman as well.

I think it means the second thing that he modified his old Earth technology. However, I find the former to be unsatisfying given the narrative. Things are more interesting if he never returned. Having alien technology repair any issues with the cassette works well enough without more to resolve any nitpicky realism issues for a comic book movie.

It seemed, fairly, implied to me that he never returned to Earth. So it's "possible" alien tech. has managed to preserve his cassette and make/repair tape players that do not damage the medium.

That or it's a comic-book movie where massive-sized aircraft carriers are capable of controlled flight and you can make a near limitless source of energy the size of your fist and implant it into your chest.

;)

Why, exactly, wouldn't he have been back to Earth? He has his own ship, and it's clear that Earth is familiar enough to the galactic community. Not to mention his "adoptive father" knew exactly how to get there, so it wasn't much of a secret at all.

Considering he has equipment that's clearly Earth-based, and is quipping references that an little kid wouldn't have known that much about... well, there's way more evidence that he's been back than he hasn't.

That said, the real answer for why the cassette tape survived is the Rule of Cool. It's the same reason all sorts of archaic devices still work just fine in fiction, including 5.25 inch disks, VHS (or even Beta) tapes, reel-to-reel computer tapes, and so on and so forth.

If Quill had returned to earth I think he'd rather stay than be a wanted man and a Reaver. Plus I do thik he'd upgrade his walkman, so the just simply allowed his walkman to continue to fuction longafter he should've fallen apart as well his tape.

Yes, because being an unskilled bum with no identity (issues he wouldn't know unless he went back), as well as constantly reminded of his dead mother, is much better than being a cool outlaw (which he was very eager to be) with his own spaceship and an entire universe to explore and profit from.

Also, he's been back to Earth multiple times even in the comics.

I'd say the character arc of the film is that he spent the last 20 years in arrested development, continuing to act like an 8 year old in a lot of ways, in denial about facing his past and moving forward.

There's no hint in the movie that Quill is either unskilled for a ob on earth nor a lack of indentity. The thing is he's only half human and I think deep down hae always knew that on some level, according to his mother's description of his father.

^^

Because he doesn't want to go back and be reminded of his dead mom.

Pretty much this. I agree that he has the capacity to go back to Earth, I just think it makes his character arc less satisfying. Earth only has unhappy memories for him.

If you want to make the argument that it has spare Walkmans, that's a pretty lame reason to constantly return to Earth (especially since he'd have to go to a Goodwill by now to have a chance to find one). I hope no one is suggesting he returns once a month to get spare batteries and they agree he at least uses alien technology to power to the damn thing.

Or he just scored some rechargable batteries and a recharger the last time he was there.

And your reasons for why he wouldn't go back are much better explanations for why he wouldn't stay there rather than never having going back.

If the rumors of an Avengers/GOTG movie actually happens Quill will have to deal with returning to earth at some point.

^ And I'm hoping his return to Earth in that scenario is the first time back. It would be far more meaningful than him regularly returning to replace walkmans and re-recording his cassettes before they wear out.

The Galaxy uses AC current and compatible outlets as well?

My grade for it is an A-. It's nice to see a fun comic book movie in an age where "dark and gritty" is such a popular formula. While the plot gets a bit silly and over the top, and a few jokes misfire, it's an overall fun movie. The Thanos cameo was awesome.

Why does everyone speak English in this movie? Or are we supposed to assume they're really speaking "Galactic" or something but it's being translated into English for the benefit of the audience?

Benefit of the audience, obviously, since there are at least a dozen different species present in the movie. Star-Lord, though, was stated to have a translator chip implanted into his neck in order to understand all languages in known space. Presumably everyone else has translator implants or translator-equipped equipment too.

Until I saw the debate here, I had just assumed he never went back to Earth. I had gotten the impression that he had spent pretty much his whole life out in other parts of the universe after Yondu took him from Earth.

My 1st grade son said that his friends at school asked him yesterday if he wanted to play Guardians. He opted for Groot. I think it's a good sign when it's reached the school playground!

that role kind of limits his lines, though.;)
