So if Peter was 8 years old when taken (if he was born in 1980 and taken in 1988). Isn't he a little 'too Earth-quippy' for an 8 year old kid?

I don't think there are many 8 year old kids who would have the knowledge to throw out something like paraphrasing "Good thing she didn't turn on a black light or it'd look like Jackson Pollock painting in here."

He's not still an eight year old, though. He would have to know what a Jackson Pollock painting was, I agree. But I see no reason they wouldn't have blacklights in space. Maybe his mom was a really big Jackson Pollock fan, I don't know.

How'd he know about the Maltese Falcon or the Lost Ark for that matter? I suspect some of his learning came from his grandfather since his mother was sick for a while.

Seeing as how I was born in 1979, though I wasn't abducted by aliens working for my father, I can use myself as a gauge for what he might know. By 8, I'm pretty sure I aw Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Maltese Falcon and Jackson Pollack might be a stretch. Though, Jackson Pollack was a favorite of art teachers, who love to tell you that (a) it's art and (b) because he did it already, you can't do it and pass it off as original.

I knew what a black light was, but I didn't know that it could be used for more than making posters and white t-shirts look cool.

It's pretty obvious that he's been back to Earth, probably many times. He also had a troll doll, a cassette player (at least two; a Walkman and the larger stereo), and several other knick-knacks scattered throughout his ship.

If you learned there was an awesome intergalactic space community where you were equally awesome and unique, would you wanna just stick around on one clump of dirt for the rest of your life?

I figured that the troll doll, Walkman, present from his mother, and other knick knacks were all in his backpack when he was abducted by Yondu. Don't know about the larger cassette player, though. I can't remember how big it was so I don't know if it could have fit in his backpack.

Peter always had the walkman, his grandfather put it in his backpack before he saw his mother. And I doubt if he ever returned to earth, he'd still be on earth if there the case.

I'm pretty sure the movie made a big point of him never returning to Earth. That's why getting a SECOND cassette of music was such a huge deal at the end.

The only problem with that story is the vintage cassette player in his ship. It's too big to have come from his backpack. Maybe he bought it in a trade bazaar from someone who picked it up from Earth. But then you wonder why he never got anything more modern...

Yeah, the hi-fi indicated somewhat to me he'd been back - but the instrumentation on it was in alien writing IIRC.

No reason to think he hadn't been back, though. Why would he be compelled to stay?

Well the reason it was a big deal was because it was from his mother, and it was Vol 2.

But I do still get the impression that he hadn't been back. Not because he somehow couldn't, but because he wasn't having too much fun being an outlaw in space and didn't really feel the need to go back.

I think it's more the same reason Vader refused to ever set foot on Tatooine or Naboo again. He didn't want to be reminded of his tragic past.

I remember once during a back story in an annual where Loki is getting drunk alone at a pity part, celebrating the Anniversary of HIS founding of the Avengers.

I should have said "arguably". :p

I think it may have been something put together by alien technology. Some planet probably had something similar. Pretty sure he would have had to replace the cassette tape at some point. I'm sure all of us who listened to tapes had them 'wear out'.

That's what I was just thinking. I suppose it's possible the larger player was some kind of retrofitted piece of alien technology. The person he got to adapt it for him probably thought he was crazy. :p

Well, more specifically, it's a second cassette of music that his Mom mixed for him before her death. No matter how many times he can go back to Earth or how far into deep space he travels, that's one thing that he can never ever replace.

At least, not without an Infinity Stone. (bam bam BAAAMM)

I doubt with the Walkman at hand, it was particularly difficult to get superior alien tech to build that hifi.

Yes, but it allowed me to use the word "disingenuous" in a post. It's a great word that I don't use enough.

If an alien race that can create ships capable of faster than light travel can't reverse-engineer a stereo from a cassette tape and a Walkman, they don't deserve to be called an advanced race. Hell, the original Transformers not only found a way to turn a skyscraper-tall robot into a portable stereo capable of playing regular tapes and tapes of other size changing Transformers, they did it twice, once for each side. ;)

And, I figure they either found a way to replicate batteries, or found a better way to power his Walkman.

Of course, why they would go through that process without digitizing the music, well that's another question. :vulcan:

^^

He wants the tactile sensation of the Walkman his mother gave him.

I'm sure there's an alien tech battery in there and never runs out or something.

And it could be that his tape was cracked or broken at some point and he took a job from some alien techie/tinkerer with his payment being that the tape be fixed, and made so it would never break or wear out.

The tape and walkman are easy to repair/replace/upgrade. But the content of that second tape is something that's irreplaceable, since it was personal and chosen by his mom, who had since died. He didn't know what was on that tape either until the end of the movie. You could make a 31st century tape for Quill but it's meaningless if you don't know what songs to put on it or the emotional attachment he assigns to them.
