GR's thought of future Kirk and Spock

I was just rereading, "Star Trek Creator" by David Alexander. There's a letter from GR to concerned fans about the rumors that Spock was going to die in TWOK. He writes, "Even if Nimoy never plays Spock again, I think it would be wonderful years from now to see Star Trek come back with an equally talented new cast playing Spock and Kirk and Bones and Scotty and all the rest as they say tomorrow's things to tomorrow's generations."

There's no date on the letter but it must have been sometime in 1981. Interesting to see what GR had thought at that time about the future of Trek. How much of that was the dissatisfaction of producing TMP or some of the early struggles he had with Harve Bennett regarding his consulting role?

Very interesting. I would have guessed that at that time (1981) no one would really be anticipating the day when new actors would play the old roles. Despite all his faults, GR was indeed ahead of his time.

I think Roddenberry actually said something analogous to what Jefferson said about the constitution: that each generation should have their own version.

I seem to remember reading that GR was quite happy to recast the characters for the TMP?

Maybe Therin mentioned it over in the literature forum?

Well, new actors, new characters, new adventures are just the way it goes with a franchise. In a way, we've all been kind of spoiled with Kirk, Spock and the rest of TOS crew. I really can't think of any other actors from any other major franchises who were able to have only their interpretations of the character standing.

I'm not the least bit surprised GR said that.

Ummm...

Please help me out here.

What other "major franchises" are there in TV and movies where there are ongoing new installments, and roles have been recast?

Dr who.....Jame bond .....Batman.....Superman.

John Connor. Sarah Connor. Buffy. The Addams Family. Jack Ryan. Battlestar Galactica. Tarzan. Zorro. Dracula. Frankenstein. The Mummy. Sherlock Holmes. Saavik.

And apparently they're recasting Lara Croft as well . . . .

Any character that lasts long enough gets recast eventually.

I think the point with the first three (and maybe part of the fourth) examples is that they were recast but the ongoing story continued.

That is, until Craig and Bale came on and Richard Pryor and the Nuclear Man were wiped from continuity ... :)

From your list only John Connor and Jack Ryan fit the bill... (I refuse to watch the abomination that is Direct to Video Addams Family movies).

Ah, semantics...
