HBO Original Drama Series LANTERNS Greenlit

Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof And Tom King To Co-Write And Executive Produce The Series

HBO, in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order for LANTERNS, a new drama series based on the iconic DC title. Emmy®-nominee Chris Mundy (HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” “Ozark”) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Emmy®-winner Damon Lindelof (HBO’s “Watchmen” and “The Leftovers”) and Eisner Award winner Tom King (“Mister Miracle,” “Supergirl”) will co-write the new series with Mundy. Lindelof and King will also serve as executive producers.

Logline: The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content, quote: “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern.’ As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era.”

James Gunn and Peter Safran, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios, quote: “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and LANTERNS brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’”

Credits: HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. LANTERNS is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof and King. Based on the DC comic “Green Lantern.”

I have very little interest in Green Lantern(s) as a DC franchise, but Tom King is probably the best comics writer ever IMO, so his involvement with this project is certainly promising.

The plot sounds like Green Lantern: True Detective

LOL--You beat me to it! That is exactly what it sounds like. It's a great decision to have an Earth based story as the first season. It gives viewers time to learn about the Corps and the GL power set before going all out space opera. I still believe if the movie had done something like this then it would have been better received.

I blame Blade 3.

Ryan Reynolds was a no one failure going no where, and that is never going to change.

It seems the thread title is incorrect; the show will actually be on old-school HBO, though it is expected to stream on Max eventually:
Lanterns is moving from Max to HBO and has received an official series order.

The redeveloped adaptation of the Green Lantern comic comes from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King.

It is part of a new strategy to move expensive scripted series from the streaming service to the linear network that also includes big-budget series such as Harry Potter and IT prequel Welcome to Derry. Obviously, all of these shows will subsequently air on the streaming service.

This is good news AFAIC, since I get HBO but don't do the streaming thing. Will definitely check it out on the basis of King's involvement, if nothing else.

Crave, in Canada, has aired HBO shows since before Max in a streaming format. I watched GoT that way, along with many others. I wonder how that will work. --although I can't imagine a huge delay in putting the program up for streaming.

Really, a mystery in the American heartland? Thats not really Green Lantern work, much less two GLs. Plus Tom King and Lindelof are involved? It sounds like something that is going to be horrendously obnoxious and care nothing about the source material, but will appeal to "prestige" TV snobs. Basically, it sounds like DC's version of Andor.

Well, it makes sense that some of the new DC stuff that Gunn isn't directly making is going to suck, hopefully this Green Lantern project is a black sheep among the new DC stuff and doesn't lead to more things like it.

Guess you never read GL/GA from the 70s?

Guess you never read GL/GA from the 70s?

He was in the American Heartland as a door to door toy salesman, not as a superhero, because he couldn't hold down a job as a test pilot. I was wondering about Green Arrow though, while he's out there where is he getting his dope, and since he's lost all his money to the IRS, is it likely that he's selling his surplus?

My problem with the plot to this series, is that it is going to take 2 Green Lanterns 12 weeks to solve one murder. Which is what happened in the first season of Preacher. It's supposed to be about a road trip, but they stay in one town for ten episodes.

If they do well, HBO will give them more money for season 2.

I would have loved this show a few years ago but I just imagine it will be rubbish.
All they need to do is adapt Johns' run and you have gold.

Guess you never read GL/GA from the 70s?

You mean the storyline that had a point, and was pretty much the culmination of years of character development for two different characters, one of which was Green Arrow? Yeah, I read it. Guess what? There were no "Murders in the American Heartland", it wasn't a police procedural or a mystery story. The story was a long road trip and even included a Guardian along for the ride, and while events happened it was very character focused. Plus, and its obvious but it must be said, Tom King and the guy who made Lost wouldn't be worthy of being in the same room as Dennis O'Neil.

Honestly You might as well have asked me if I'd read "Wonder Woman from the 40s" for all the relevance GL/GA has to this Lanterns show. Outside of hal jordan being in a story with a second lead that comic has literally no resemblance to the show as described at all.
