"Green Lantern" concept art...

Kilowog's head looks flatter and rounder than I recall seeing him in Justice League and First Flight. But it's an interesting interpretation, and faithful otherwise.

The Guardian design is interesting, a bit more exotic than the comics' design. It looks like the skull is a bit translucent.

That head close-up of Tomar-Re looks like it's missing the beak. There's an outline where the beak would go, and there does seem to be a beak in the full-length image. I figure the headshot is one of those anatomical study images where a body part is omitted for visibility.

How are they going to pull off having a guy named Sinestro be played as a good guy for the whole movie? With a name like that, he might as well have "VILLAIN" tattooed on his forehead.

I don't know what you mean by "pull it off". Just have him be a good guy, with some foreshadowing. That's easy.

The point is, a good guy named "Sinestro?" That's just such a goofy, over-the-top comic-book villain name that it's hard enough to take seriously when applied to a villain, let alone to a hero. Audiences who come into this with no knowledge of the mythos are going to go, "Why the hell did they give this heroic character a blatant bad-guy name like 'Sinestro'?" With a name like that, they're going to expect him to turn out evil, so having him go through a whole movie without going evil is going to be incongruous. And even if he did go bad in the same movie, as he did in First Flight, it's still hard to take it seriously when a story introduces you to a guy named "Sinestro" and tries to pass him off as a good guy. You're basically telegraphing what's going to happen. It's like doing a spy story where a seemingly loyal agent is named Betrayo.

Thank god they're keeping all the kooky aliens in. I was worried they would try to mainstream it. Kilowag looks like the bad guys from Fifth Element there.

It's only obvious when you see it spelled out. When pronounced, "Sinestro" can easily be disguised from "sinister" in a number of ways. And when mixed in with all kinds of other alien names, no one's going to be focusing on his except for the people who already know who and what he is.

Considering, also, that he wasn't really evil so much as obsessed with order, especially early on, this particular nitpick is pretty stupid.

You may as well complain that Kilowog's name is too similar to Kilowatt.

That's the current retcon, in any event. In his first appearances he was simply a megalomanic who used his power ring to make himself dictator of his home world.

They've added the concept art for the Guardians:

In his first appearance, they didn't even have the "used his ring to conquer his homeworld" stuff. He was just some ex-lantern who hated the Corps and wanted to kill them all. They added the whole "He trained Hal Jordan and was obsessed with Order" thing in the 80s when they realized most of their villains lacked depth.

Yep, the "training Jordan" thing was part of the first big retcon - I believe placing Kilowog as the drill sergeant and sticking Salaak in there at the start were the last retcon. Kilowog was completely unknown to Jordan and the other GLs of the 1980s Green Lantern Corps comic when they first encountered him...

I'm always amazed when a mythos based on drawings that have been around for 40 years needs "concept art."

I guess Gil Kane, Neal Adams and Dick Giordano are kibitzers.

Literal translations of old comic book drawings = silly looking movie. Of course they need concept art; there's no other way to work out practical designs.

It'd be like taking the 1966 version of the Enterprise and using it in a huge contemporary version of the show - uh-uh.
