Green Lantern (2011)

If GL opens to less than $60 they can claim some fatigue with the genre being the 3rd film and save face. If GL opens to less than $50m the write ups are going to be harsh.

Doesn't help that around the corner is "Cars 2" and "Transformers 3"

People thought X-men First class disappeared quickly after it's first week? Wait till Green Lantern gets left in the dirt.

First Class is performing as it should given it's opening. Who thinks it's "dropped off"? It's placed #2 in the dailies all week, typical drops. It'll be at about $109m after Thur #'s are figured in and likely pull in another $12-13m this weekend for a total of about $122m +/- after some 17 days in release.

Does Blade no longer count? Marvel comics daywalking vampire slayer played by Wesley Snipes in 3 films.

Blade had a mid-range budget at $45 million, though it surely is a superhero movie.
Nothing hinted that budget was part of your criteria. Major Motion Pictures have various budgets.

I'd love to see Black Panther or maybe Night Thrasher show up somewhere.

Should have been clearer. Actually, it's a shame that even when it comes to films with mid-range budgets Blade is still an outlier when it comes to the casting of the lead.

What more do you want? Blade is probably the most commercially viable black superhero. John Stewart is cool, yes, but not the most iconic Green Lantern. If there's a sequel I'm almost certain he'll be included. Like it or not, though, Hal Jordan is the Green Lantern. Everyone else is just a Green Lantern. Black Panther? Barely known outside of comic fan circles, and perhaps a little stereotypical. Luke Cage is kinda a goofy character rooted in a bygone age. The Falcon? Total second-stringer. The only thing you could possibly do is race bending another character, but that opens up a whole different can of worms.

I really don't know who either is and I do wonder how many non-comic book fans know about the iconic Green Lantern(s) and the less so.

I do know that comic book movies often make characters who were white black (rarely, of course, the leads); and simply using an equivalent black character to the white guy seems a more straightforward method.

C'mon.

Lance Reddick smouldering on camera.

Don't we all want that movie? Work out the plot later.

I think that's true of comic book fans, but to a lot of kids who saw the Justice League cartoon, John Stewart IS Green Lantern.

I missed Thor at our local cinema so I'll have to wait for it on dvd. Green Lantern is now playing there, but I refuse to pay a premium to see it in 3D so I'll probably have to wait for it on dvd as well.

Yep. To my young nephews, John Stewart is the "iconic" Green Lantern. The *true* Green Lantern. Even after my brother has explained to them that Alan and Hal came before, they don't give a shit. John is Green Lantern to them, period.

He's on their back packs, coloring books, DVD's, they have his action figure, etc.

When you can be replaced....no, no, scratch that...when you can be SUCCESSFULLY replaced for a decade....you're not an "icon". Not by any stretch or definition of the word.

Superman and Batman are "iconic".

Hal Jordan is not "iconic". He's the most well known GL to a particular age group just as Alan Scott was the most well known GL to a particular age group. Just as Kyle and John are the most well known GL's to a particular age group of comic collectors and kids. Like it or not, Hal is just a face in a crowd of GL's nowadays.

The 70's are over.

Alan Scott was GL in comics for less than 10 years before disappearing, and not too many of his original fans are very vocal these days. Hal was GL for over 30 years - and even after he disappeared briefly, his spectre (sorry) hung over every subsequent GL. They were clearly placeholders. Hal Jordan will always be the iconic Green Lantern.

I would have been happier to have had John Stewart in this film. I never followed the comics, just the cartoons with him. He's the first one I think of when I think of GL.

What's the rough estimates on how much this needs to take a) this weekend and b) US domestic to be seen as a success?

A big-budget superhero that stars someone other than a white guy, clearly. Granted, following the biggest properties in the comic book industry, that's a bit difficult. They're mostly white guys. Then again, there's nothing that says second-tier superheroes can't be the subject of a big movie. Hell, Green Lantern already seems second-tier to me. Other than knowing he's one of relatively few superheros who has been something other than a white guy, I can't say I know a thing about him.
