Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

Awesome, another abortion of a superhero movie. The trailer looked just awful. The suit looked awful. Blake Lively even looked awful, no small feat that.

The suit looks almost exactly like the comic books...how can it be awful??

Perhaps because it looks tacked on and animated (so far) on top of real footage? Film is a different medium than comics. Some things work better, some things work worse.

On the other hand, for you all that insist on *everything* looking as close to the comic book, why aren't you calling for plain color backgrounds and color printing? Why bother shooting a film if you can just scan a comic directly and put it up on screen as 'exactly like the comic books'?

A comic based film is an Adaptation. And that adaptive process applies to the story, characters, *and* visuals.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I don't "insist" that things look like their source material - in fact, I generally advocate for filmmakers simply ignoring anything in a property that doesn't make aesthetic or practical sense to them. I'd just as soon do away with the traditional tights that most of these characters wear.

I simply note that this movie is so faithful visually to the source material that any complaints made on that basis are beyond trivially stupid.

And in this case, I happen to like the faithfulness because I'm a complete fanboi for this particular character. Anyone who doesn't share my enthusiasm for Hal/GL, in this case, is invited to make conversation with someone else.

And now, here's something that's just ridiculously cool - to me. If you don't like it, you don't like it...and so what?

The ring

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

That's fair.

I'm freely admit I have never read GL, and I only know very little about the character.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I'm not so much concerned with the visuals being faithful to the comic, as with them not looking silly and fake

So, wait.

Ryan Reynolds is hot?!

Man, smirking douchebags get all of the chicks.

I know where you're coming from.. though I must acknowledge that Reynolds is quite handsome, but yeah, he usually plays the kind of guy I would've hated in high school.
He always seems to try and smile with his top row of teeth and bottom meeting perfectly if you know what I mean. Like a bit of a forced smile.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I don't see the problem with Ryan Reynolds. I think he's perfectly likable, and that likability is probably what got him cast. Plus, he's a damn good dramatic actor when he wants to be.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

Really? I defended him in a way in my last post but I'd like to see how you defend him as a dramatic actor.

Though I will add that I have NO problem with him playing the Green Lantern guy. I agree with Dennis pretty much everywhere there.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

Well, he can be somber and melancholic when he wants to be. I even think parts of the Green Lantern trailer exhibited that. I haven't seen Buried yet, but I hear he's getting rave reviews for his incredibly strong, dramatic performance in that film.

Reynolds is a lot like Robert Downey Jr. in the sense that they both have quirky, offbeat sensibilities but they can also juggle extremely dramatic performances when they want to. They are just mostly known for their comedic, quirky personalities because that's how the audience prefers to see them.

I would have much preferred someone like Bradley Cooper over Ryan Reynolds, but he brings a certain star power and likability that Green Lantern will need in order to appeal to a much larger viewing base. Plus, Reynolds is a perfectly capable dramatic actor when he wants to be, and I have faith he'll balance some of the quirkier parts of his acting with the dramatic parts with ease.

The ring

I want that ring...especially if it's the real deal. I wanna be a GL...

I wouldn't meet the "great fear" criterion, I'm afraid, but even if I did I'd be a real bad choice for other reasons of temperament:

"You have the ability to overcome great fear. You are, however, too easily pissed off. Next."

I don't know if I see him as a good dramatic actor but I find him oddly annoying and yet likable at the same time. I guess that's why I do see him as the perfect casting as Deadpool. Like how his jokes are stupid but yet you find yourself laughing at them at the same time. I also think what makes Reynolds easy to cast as a hero/superhero and adds to the sex appeal is his body. He's not bulky but yet diesel enough where he can pull off wearing spandex.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I think Reynolds would've made a better Flash...at least Flash as he was characterized in the JL/JLU cartoon series which I would guess is probably the prime basis for the Flash in the demo they're shooting for movie-wise. Not sure if the Flash could sustain a movie, though.

Isn't Reynolds a little old for that version of the Flash? We're talking Wally whasisname rather than Barry Allen, right? Or is the JLU version a composite?

The JLU version was Wally West and shown to be around Reynolds' age.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

I guess I haven't kept up with the Flash; I thought he was in his early twenties. Or is West different in the comics and the JLU?

You know, I "mourned" Allen's death mainly for the fact that he and Jordan were buddies - I mean, go double-dating, hang-out-and-grab-a-beer buddies - as far back as the 1960s. Weren't many characters like that in DC. Superman and Batman were partners at times, but Clark and Bruce did not kick back and watch the Steelers (or whomever) on Sunday afternoons.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

Martin Campbell did compare this film to Star Wars, which is interesting because there have been a few comparisons drawn here and there. Both franchises feature a group of space policemen with almost limitless powers (Who are eventually destroyed from within, but that's a different story...).

The weird thing is, this seems more like a Jon Favreau film from the trailer than something by Martin Campbell.

Re: Green Lantern E.T. Spot!!!

Campbell made Zorro and James Bond cool again (twice, in the case of the latter). I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.
