Great trailers but terrible movies

What movies can you think of that had really exciting trailers, but you ended up being very disappointed with the movie itself.

Some that come to my mind:
The Phantom Menace
X-Men 3
Spiderman 3
Broken Arrow

Right off the top of my head I can't think of one in particular but it seems to be especially true of comedies. You see the trailer and think it looks hilarious, then you see it and realize all of the funniest scenes were actually in the trailer. That annoys the hell out of me!! :scream:

I thought the Spiderman 3 trailer was about 70 times better than the movie.

I liked Revenge of the Sith, but thought that the trailer was more epic and told the story better :)

The League of Extraordinary Gentleman. I absolutely LOVED the trailer and while I enjoyed the movie it didn't come close to my expectations after watching the trailer.

The Vantage Point trailer was a work of art. I've rarely seen a better trailer.

The film was balls, though.

the phantom menace ( I was 13 at the time and totaly stooked for this movie. Then I saw it, OH THE HORROR THE HORROR) judge dredd, robocop 2 & 3, deep blue sea, the matrix sequels, Indiana jones and the kingDUMG of the PLASTICskull, blade 2 & 3, and I could go on N on, but I won't.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace
OH MY GOD! I cannot forget the absolute offeder. SUPERMAN RETURNS. This movie had one of the BEST trailers I had ever seen, with the Kripton homworld theme playing in the background and seeing clark thru the years growing up and discoveribg his powers, PLUS the fact this was being directed by Singer, they just coulden't get it wrong! Than I saw it:( And the rest is history.

Van Helsing
Alien-3
Pearl Harbor 2001
Alien: Resurrection
Con Air
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Judge Dredd
Australia
Matrix-3
Blood Rayne
8 Legged Freaks
Batman and Robin
Underworld rise of Lycans
Titanic
Godzilla
Blair Witch
Terminator-3
Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?
StarWars Phantom Menace
Starship Troopers
TMNT animated
Xmen-3
Superman Returns

8mm.

The trailer was just Nick Cage in the flickering lights of a projector. You see his face change as he's obviously viewing something so horrible he can't deal with it. This is after the voiceover has told you he's the tough as nails/ seen it all private eye type.

The movie was a rather boring and contrived trip from "colorful character" to "colorful character" as he hunts down a killer from snuff films.

Pearl Harbor.

It made the film look like a truly epic and great WWII movie. Wow how wrong that was. Also I'd like to nominate the trailers for Cast Away and What Lies Beneath for RUINING THE PLOTS OF THE MOVIES IN THE TRAILERS!!!!!!! This is a crime that should be punishable by whipping!

God help me I went to see "The Covenant" just because of that sweet trailer with the shot of the guy disassembling the car with his mind and then reforming it on the other side of him. It was a mistake!

I can't think of better examples than the ones named but you know there actually is a 'formula' for making a compelling trailer even if the movie sucks. A quick Google doesn't find it spelled out everywhere, but I know I have a site with references saved somewhere.

Similar to how footage from the 'Mary Poppins' trailer was used to make it seem like a horror movie, or 'The Silence of the Lambs' used to make it seem like a romantic comedy. (Good youtube views if you haven't.) The formula works almost every time.
