I logged on here because this is the second episode in a row that is giving me some hope for Enterprise. The A story is decent, the characterizations all very good for this series especially and somewhere close to other Treks; the acting meshed pretty well, especially Montgomery and the woman who played his mother. Montgomery's scene dealing with his father's death was convincing, a fine acting job without a great deal of help from Archer.

The B story was really good--that's what gives me the most hope. There was real wit in it--the conversation about shouldn't there be families on the Enterprise, starting off to be the cute prequel stuff that this series usualy does, but then something really funny especially for fans--"if they do they should have a psychologist on board..."

The same with the movie--it was the typical too-cute by half crew antics, until T\Pol interpreted the movie from the "monster's" point of view. Not only was this unexpectedly funny in a witty way, but it is exactly what Star Trek did to begin with: it took the point of view of the alien, which was unlike TV sci fi or most movie sci fi before.

Yeah, the pace is off, but pace is a lost art it seems. I just saw Sum of All Fears on DVD and it was a multimillion dollar movie and big hit, and it had no sense of pace either. And it didn;'t have to tell a story in 34 minutes.
So I'd say this was a B, grading on the curve for a generally underachieving series.

This episode was a pleasant surprise and turned out a lot better than I was expecting. It gave Anthony Montgomery a chance to shine and he certainly deserved his own episode after being neglected this season.

It was nice to see the "sweet spot" again. One of the most poignant and moving scenes was between Archer and Travis, after the Captain has learnt of Travis' father's death. Both Montgomery and Bakula played the scene beautifully and full of emotion.

I thought the B plot was very amusing. It was nice to see Archer and T'Pol go on their first "date" together.
I loved T'Pol practically telling Phlox to shut up during the movie.

I'd give it a B+.

I finally got to see Horizon, from some of the comments I was expecting the entire crew of the Horizon to be black, which would not have bothered me at all, but this wasn't even close. I really don't understand that comment at all now. I enjoyed this ep, I give it an A.

I realy wanted to like it. I did.

This is the first time that I have gotten up and walked out on a new trek episode since I stopped watching Voyager.

It was just so predictable. About half way through the episode, my friend predicted the entire plot. And I don't just mean the ending, I mean the entire plot he predicted. We got up to play pool (the table is right next to the TV so we could still kinda tell what was going on). We stopped our game to see the end, and my friend was DEAD on. Someone may say "Well duh! Anyone could have predicted the plot!" But what does that say about the state of trek.

Travis is also a terrible actor. He seems to have fewer emotional states than he can count on his arms.

The B movie things was interesting. Kinda.

There have been some really good episodes of Ent, but this was NOT one of them.

C/C-

More reheated leftovers. Not bad enough to toss in the garbage, but when are they gonna serve us something hot and fresh?

I sometimes wonder if these people even *watch* television to see what the shows they "compete" against are able to do in the time-frame allotted.

Grade: C

The Good:

1) This episode clearly benefitted from having a new composer.
2) Nice work from the set designers and FX guys.
3) The scene between Archer and Travis discussing his father's death. We need to see more of this kind of scenes on Enterprise.

The Bad:

1) Somebody please remind mr. Bormanis he's no longer writing for Voyager. Way too much <TECH> in this script. Besides the Travis/Archer scene, the death of his father was hardly discussed.
2) The ending blew. Since the aliens wanted to take the ship and not simply its cargo, the argument between Travis and his brother on how to act was instantly turned into a non-event. Way too convenient.
3) The teaser was lame and a waste of time.

The Ugly:

1) Frankenstein ;)
The B-plot was ok, but it only helped to illustrate that the A-plot lacked substance. Some of T'Pol's lines were funny, other fell flat.
2) "You'll be my date"

I thought it was fabulous episode. Athony Motgomery was really on his game in this one. I hope they give him more episodes because he really can hold his own. Also I liked the little converstation between Reed and Travis about haveing familes on the ship. How prophetic.

indeed.. if oNLY they'd listened to him.. they could have saved us from MANY PAINFUL HOURS of watching weanie crusher RUIN every episode he was ever in  :D

I thought it was pretty good, better than Judgment and much better than The Crossing. I would say one of the top 5 of the season.

Geeze what is this anti-Wesly thing some people have. Personally I never had a problem with him. Honestly I think its envy. He was a kid who was probably far smarter than most fans.

Just saw it tonight.

B-

Not bad, but again, very predictable. The "family is pissed off at me, but by the end I'll save their asses and they'll be proud of me" has been done before.

It was nice to see a little of Mayweather's life though.

Yeah, by other shows. At least ENT isn't repeating itself here. And really, this was an episode about the character's relationships. Not just a plot machine episode which I liked. And this episode does demonstrate that Montgomery can act. It's nice to be reminded of that. I hope he gets more than one chance at this every two years.

I give Horizon a 'C' (Well, that's ALL you ever give these E eps, Dixon!)... For the usual reasons... Though I did like it better than the drawn out "Breach" episode...

Yeah, Travis gets a more meaty part here...and in fact there's more meat in this episode than in "The Breach" and "The Crossing" combined, I think... (Yah, there's tons of stuff for me to digest and incorporate into my little timeline in this one)... But it's all still played out rather routinely, predictably... If TPTB really wanted to blow us away, they'd have demolished the Horizon with Travis being the lone survivor--recovered in a Bad way, and radically transformed into a character swearing vengeance...a storyline which could have Really taken on a future arc... But, B&B naturally wouldn't allow such a thing, oh no...

Strange how the Horizon crew's all-black--but Travis has a nice all-white girl! Well, must be one of those politically-correct canon rules or something...

The one-liner about having families aboard a starship... Further proof, dare I say it, that TPTB are trying to cutout TOS completely and make this series a prequel to TNG...

Deneva station: OK, I guess that jibes with the info in "Operation--Annihilate!"...

But what's this about the Orions being mentioned? OK, I really have no problems with it, honestly... It's just that with the Klingons, Romulans, Vulcans, Tellarites, Andorians, Ferengi, Tholians, Borg... WHO'S LEFT to contact?
Maybe some new aliens who'll never show up in TOS, TNG, DS9, or V, right?
