Grace Holloway

EJA

Fleet Captain
Does anyone else fancy Grace in the '96 TV movie? I seem to remember not being all that attracted to her when I first saw it, but after having watched it a few times fairly recently she's grown on me a bit more.

Oh, yeah, Daphne Ashbrook. :)

I liked Grace too, and I really liked Ashbrook in the role. I thought she had good comic timing and her bantering with the Doctor was amusing. I liked her enough that I've been writing a story for fun that has Grace reunite with the Doctor (10, with Martha) as their paths cross in London during an unfortunate event. :D

I've always thought that Fox missed the boat in '96 with Doctor Who. Not in the conventional sort of way, not in the way that Philip Segal intended, a continuation of the Doctor traveling in time and space and all that.

Rather, I think that Segal could have made a really interesting series based on something that happens at the end of "Enemy Within" -- the Doctor asks Grace to come with him, and she says, "No, you come with me." Well, what if he had? What if the Doctor had decided, "I'm going to try this settling down thing?"

Medical doctor. Crazy alien scientist. Together, they get into wild adventures across the world.

Grace turns up in the Doctor Who Magazine comics a couple of times. One storyline is a straight-up sequel to the film. Then there's a dream sequence. And she appears briefly (and unnamed) in "The Flood," the final eighth Doctor storyline.

I liked her appearance in "The Ten Doctors." Of course, the mental image of Daphne Ashbrook and Lalla Ward sucking face has its appeal...

Well, it worked with the Jon Pertwee era. And RTD never let Eccleston's Doctor go very far from Earth, either. It might have allowed the US series to bring UNIT back as well.

I dunno, given the timeframe it would have seemed like an X-Files knockoff.

Was never a huge fan of Grace, and actually thought Chang Lee would have made a cooler companion.

That moment was definitely a big highlight in that comic.

"The Ten Doctors"? I don't believe I've heard of that. Dare I ask how exactly Grace and Romana get into such a situation?

Speaking of Grace, at the time the film was released I thought it was pretty icky when she snogged the Doctor, but now after having gone through all the stuff in the new series with Rose, it doesn't bother me that much anymore.

"The Ten Doctors" is an online fan comic series that ran for a couple of years. You can check out the entire series in PDF form here. As for the aforementioned scene, Romana gets hospitalized and Grace is the attending doctor. Grace gets into her head that Romana must be The Doctor (despite the female appearance) and decides to snog Romana (while she's unconscious...at first).

And after Donna caved in season 4, Grace now holds the honor of being the one companion who said 'hell no' when asked to come travelling.

I'm pretty sure The Brigadier has turned down the offer at least once, and while I can't think of any specific examples, I seem to recall there be several instances of noncompanion characters throughout the years being offered to join The Doctor but turned him down.

As I recall, in the scene with all the companions saying their farewells, Grace and Romana are not content with a handshake and a wave.

Ah, yes, that's right. I had forgotten about that.

she was hotter in DS9, even though her character was a bit of a stick in the mud. at least her character is getting redeemed a bit in the Titan book series.

I dunno, I don't recall him ever asking anyone who refused. But if you come up with a name, let me know.

Can you call someone a "companion" if they don't travel with the Doctor?

Joan Redfern also turned down the Doctor's offer to travel with him.

To me, a 'companion' is someone whos travelled with the Doctor for at least two consecutive adventures. Otherwise I tend to think of them as 'passengers' (Roses mom, Adam, the Brig, etc). Thats just my view though.

How did the brig get back form the antimatter universe in the three Doctors?

And Micky, doh!

And Sarah Jane turned him down too when the old codger triedto make it an affair to remember.
