GR character notes...

Here's an interesting memo in which Gene Roddenberry discusses a recap of the original characters somewhere mid season production of TOS' second season.

I find the remarks regarding Spock quite interesting, particularly his obersavation that Spock is a difficult character to write properly.

This must be the infamous 'trying to keep the peace' memo. Or is there a different one?

Dang, I wish they'd made the thing more legible, I can't read it clearly at all with my eyesight.

It strikes me as trying to keep the characters on track. Season two does have a looser and somewhat jokier feel to it and this might have been an effort by GR to rein that in some.

Mel, you can enlarge fine print in most browsers by holding the CTRL key and hitting the + key. Go bigger by hitting the + key an extra time or two.

To return the screen to normal, hold CTRL and hit 0 (zero) once. :bolian:

Thanks, Zap, but the problem I was having with it is the light text against a white background. Though someone saw my post and transcribed the information for me. So all's good now.

I had been debating whether to screenshot the pages, pull them into a paint program, and mess with brightness/contrast/negative image etc.

Now I wonder who that kind soul might've been?

That's a good idea. Should work great if you get just the right contrast, Good thinking! :techman:

Thanks for sharing, very interesting stuff. A few criticisms of Gene Coon in there, maybe?

A note on timing. April 18 '68 places it about three months after Assignment : Earth was produced, and three weeks after it aired, so GR was likely gearing up for Season 3 when he wrote this.

A shame not one of his suggestions was ever followed!

As has been noted by many Season 3 did shift away from the looser and somewhat jokier feeling of Season 2 and back toward the more straightforward tone of Season 1. I, for, one really applaud that and I think there are some Season 2 episodes that would have benefited from that sensibility.

Interesting stuff indeed. :techman: Particularly fascinating to read GR's proposed plans for Chekov in Season 3. It backs up everything Walter Koenig has been telling us for years, about how they were going to sign him as a full contract player in the third season (unique among the secondary cast), and that Gene had big plans for Chekov's further development, all of which went by the wayside when Gene ended up stepping down from the show. A great shame.

Fully realized (or maybe not so fully) with the Wesley Crusher character in TNG? Interesting especially in light of some of the family issues mentioned in the Trek Nation documentary...

...and of course these notes end up reminding everybody involved "hey, there are hot babes on this starship!" Oh, Gene...

Chekov as a major character would have been an interesting show, esp. with the serious tone of S3. Make him less a bafoon. In "Eden" he has a pretty good part. More of that, especially being confused or frustrated by the service occasionally? Hm.

When I was younger I didn't pay attention to it much, but as the years passed I find Chekov's accent too exaggerated. It should have been toned down.
