Gotham - Season 1

Its not a matter of him failing but what he will be forced to sacrifice personally and or professionally to get the job done that will drive the drama.

It's not realistic to expect Gordon to mount a one-man crusade to clean up Gotham. He's only one man in a bureaucracy. As he rises through the ranks he'll gain a little power in terms of appointments and policy, but he can't hold every cop personally accountable, or prevent people with deep pockets from controlling city hall, or somehow end crime. However noble his ideals and brave his actions, there will still be plenty of crime in Gotham.

Of course not, because he won't be alone in the fight forever. As I said, the story will probably be one of Gordon building a cadre of allies around himself, a group of honest cops and officials who will push back against the corruption and help clean up the government and police. In the comics, Bullock, Essen, Montoya, and Allen are all parts of Gordon's core group of clean cops, so presumably they'll move into such roles in the show eventually.

i'm finding this show really dull.

its like watching inconsequential filler that now and again goes 'oooh this is something vaguely to do with batman'

Pretty good showing tonight. Some pretty violent deaths for the time slot and the catfight at the end was short but brutal. Penguin has more great moments even though they were telegraphed. Cracks in the Gordan/Barbara relationship have widened which is good. Young Bruce was again excellent.

Well Fox has no 10 p.m. time slot, so that's why Jack Bauer was allowed to torture people during family hour.

I hope Nolan is watching. He said he couldn't do the Penguin.

"I'd be more excited to have Philip Seymour Hoffman in the film than to have the Penguin. There are certain characters that are easier to mesh with the more real take on Batman we're doing. The Penguin would be tricky."

That's really weird. Penguin's just a gangster. He's basically the most grounded member of Batman's rogues' gallery and would have fit in just fine.

The full-on "Gangster Penguin" is (comparatively) recent in the comics - last 15-20 years or so. Before that he was a "themed" villain like all the rest of them.

Fucking Tim Burton.

I like that movie! Nothing wrong with a different twist on things; it's not like Burton tried to push "his" Penguin on any other iteration.

...it's not like Burton tried to push "his" Penguin on any other iteration.

Except that Batman: TAS was required to use Burton's Penguin and Catwoman designs rather than the more classic designs the producers wanted. Not sure whether Burton himself was personally responsible for that rather than some Warner Bros. exec, but it was pushed on another iteration.

Penguin and Catwoman were both awesome in TAS, IMO. TAS Selina and the Batman Returns version had almost nothing in common, though. Two completely different back-stories.

^I'm talking about the design of the characters, not the writing. TAS had to make Selina a blonde because Burton's was a blonde, even though she's almost always been a brunette in the comics.

This page shows Timm's original designs for Penguin and Catwoman. (The image isn't very large; frustratingly, Google's image search has dropped all its most useful features like the ability to search for a given image in different sizes, or else hidden them away where I can't find them.) He wanted Penguin to look exactly like his original 1940s comics appearance, and gave Catwoman a look that was basically her 1966 comics outfit, much like Julie Newmar's TV costume only green. The site claims that Catwoman was changed to reflect Michelle Pfeiffer's figure as well as her hair color.

When the series was brought back as The New Batman Adventures and the characters redesigned, the producers reverted Penguin to the original '40s design Timm had wanted in the first place, and gave Catwoman black hair and an all-black costume. (A tie-in comic explained that she stopped dying her hair after discovering that the makers of her hair-color product were mistreating animals as part of their testing process.)

I like Liza. Good show this week.

ETA: Is she supposed to be like a DC character? The make-up & demeanor was "cold".

That "Search Tools" button doesn't appear on my browser. There is a menu on the side that seems to have the same options as the dropdown menu you show. But it doesn't do what I want, which is to search for a specific image in various sizes. It just narrows the search to all images of a certain size range. There used to be a function in Image Search where you could select a specific image, input its URL into the field, and Google would display all results for that exact image in different sizes. That's what I was looking for.

But he didn't go back to his original Catwoman. TBH I prefer the Penguin he was forced to use first - much more sinister.

Obviously, and I never claimed that he did. The point is that Catwoman has almost always been brunette (except for a few issues in the '40s, I think), but B:TAS had to make her blonde to resemble Pfeiffer. Once the pressure to follow Burton's lead was gone, they reverted Selina to her proper dark hair color.

This might be what you are looking for: https://images.google.com/

No, that doesn't help. It just gives me a page of various B:TAS-related images.

For some reason, Google Search keeps getting less precise and useful. It used to give you exactly what you asked for. These days, it tends to list things that are just generally similar, as if it assumed we're all idiots incapable of knowing precisely what we want. Even putting search terms in quotes doesn't seem to limit it to the exact words anymore.

Not only that, but Image Search doesn't seem to let you preview images anymore or open them directly -- you click on an image and it just takes you to the site that contains it, even if it's a really long blog page and you have to scroll down 20 posts to find the actual picture. It's a ridiculous change for the worse.

I never claimed that you claimed that he did! My point is that he stuck with a Burton-style Catwoman design, which is very different from his original design, and much more important that the question of hair colour IMO.

Google.com doesn't take all of us to the same place.

It sucks any of us to a regional google.

Most countries have their own google home page which is delineated by your IP number.

Your IP number says which country you are from and what company you buy bandwidth from, that any one can read or look up.

Are you using any java blockers or ad blockers?

Too strong a setting on those things can remove useful buttons.

See how well Google Canada services you?

http://www.google.ca/

Maybe they have a slightly different lay "oot"?

Instead of 'I never said that' followed by 'I never said that you did', how about saying something like "That's not where I was going (or what I meant), but thanks."

Threads get derailed with side arguments all the time here. It would be easy to avoid that, if one were so inclined.

Just pointing it out, trying to be helpful. Take it with as many grains of salt as you like.

Now, back to the topic at hand.
