"Goodfellas" TV series possibly moving forward

Some of you may remember that last month (though I couldn't find a thread about it), a Goodfellas television series was announced as being in the works. Now we have some comments from Wiseguy author Nicholas Pileggi suggesting that the television series will proceed forward.
Nicholas Pileggi said:
I want to do it, Marty wants to do it, Warner Bros wants to do it. Of course, you can't pick up from Goodfellas, since we murdered everybody, or rather, everybody was murdered! There's nobody left.

But I think we're going to figure out a way to do the early years - sort of a prequel.
I'm not sure how I personally feel about the idea of a television prequel to Goodfellas, let alone any sort of follow-up product at all. If Scorsese and Pileggi are both involved, it may stand a chance and I wouldn't be surprised if Scorsese would want to shop such a series to HBO, considering his current series Boardwalk Empire is currently airing there. To be taken seriously, a Goodfellas-based series would naturally need to be on a cable channel; a broadcast network would never fit the tone that would be needed. As with anything else, I suppose the bottom line regarding possible quality will be the writing staff and especially the actor who will be taking over Ray Liotta's Henry Hill.

Does anyone have suggestions on an actor who could pull that off?

I love GOODFELLAS, but I must admit I'm perplexed what new ground a series could cover that wasn't covered in the film or on THE SOPRANOS. I suppose it will be a bit of a period piece, but not far enough removed from the present to have the interest that is provided by the period details on, say, BOARDWALK EMPIRE.

As far as being a prequel, what kind of ground would it cover? A young Henry Hill who occasionally sells stolen cigarettes while skipping school? Or are they going older?
