Giving STO Another Try

When the Borg Queen in VOY Unimatrix goes, "We'll see you soon, Harry," maybe she was talking about the Borg King.

That one was weird and came out of nowhere.
Could have been a great character development thing for Kim if this was expanded upon, but it was just 'dropped' and never heard about again.

I decided to give Star Trek Online another try on my PS4 and I don't know if they changed the gameplay, or if it's just more of what I'm looking for this time, but I enjoying it a lot more than the first time I tried it back when it was released.
Is all of the DS9 and Voy related stuff something that you have to build up to or can you jump right to it? I want to follow the story, so if all of that comes later in the story, I will gladly wait until I'm at that point.
I've gotten into STO myself, also on PS4. Currently I'm playing a Bolian officer called Detaith. I also have a Klingon officer and a Romulan officer. I also have a TOS era Andorian and a human. I've definitely been enjoying the game immensely.

^^ I'll second TJ's post with regards to being able to play the game for free. All of the content designed for single players is perfectly playable without spending irl money; I can't really judge the group stuff as I don't generally play it. My 2 main characters don't even use tier 6 ships, just because I like the designs of the ones I have on them (fleet variants, but tier 5s all the same). I'd recommend the reputation system as a good way to get better gear, some of the sets in there are quite nice. There are plenty of nice 'budget build' videos on Youtube for ideas as well.

As for the 'grind' mentioned by Haggis - true, if you are trying to get the best of the best stuff without spending money, you'll be spending a *lot* of time, a lot of which can't be avoided even with money. So my advice there is simply, don't. Play the game to have fun; better gear is always nice, but not the reason I play. I'm perfectly happy to slap the Borg around using my 10-year old star cruiser without ever considering upgrading it to something better. Sure, it might take 1 or 2 minutes longer, but I don't mind that.
Also keep in mind that you and earn ships my completing special events.

Yep! I still use my Cnidarian Defender (the living Jellyfish ship from “Farpoint”), which I got from one of the Summer Risa events a couple of years ago. That thing kicks profound ass. Probably one of the most powerful ships in the game.

Love the JF, great for elite runs like Starbase or Doomsday, just pops ships like they were bloons, plus great for team healing..........but of course if you use it, remember to close your chat windows, as without fail someone will be red faced with anger that you dared use it in a random pug they also joined. Lol

JF gets hate because it's the AFK Ship.

I go through spurts with STO, been playing since Beta. I've kind of done everything there is to do at this point so I tend to leave it for long stretches and come back when there's a new mission to play.

I miss the Foundry, had alot of fun with that. Too bad the ancient spaghetti code of STO makes it completely unusable now. I two missions I created get fairly popular, and I was working on my magnum opus for a long time but never got the chance to release before the Foundry went away.

Both of my published ones were KDF, the first was a straightforward story about an aging Klingon captain who had called on you for aid. The mission felt odd, going after an old Cardassian outpost dating back to the Dominion War. Turns out that the True Way discovered some information and were trying to use it extort the old captain... turns out his father was captured and held at the facility, which would have led to the captain himself being dishonored. He had worked hard to cover it up, but the information was going to be released. He got you to attack the base and destroy the evidence. At the end, you had the option to either fight the old captain and give him an honorable death, or keep him alive and force him to face his dishonor.

The second was about a rouge Klingon scientist working with Romulans to run experiments on Borg. I was able to create some neat maps with Klingon bases fused with Borg parts.

My last mission would have been a journey to the Pakled homeworld. I was going Borg again... my story of the Pakleds were that the Borg had assimilated their world for some kind of resource it had, but were uninterested in the Pakleds themselves. The Pakleds learned to cobble together Borg refuse to uplift themselves and took some Borg inspiration for their own culture... the Borg assimilate, the Pakled look for things. The issue at the end was that the Borg's extraction of resources from their planet was causing it to destabilize. Our player had to get in, access an elevator that led to the planet core and modify some Borg technology without triggering the Borg to attack. I had planned to add a bit of a twist ending where the Borg catch you at the end, realize what you're doing and... back off, realizing you're actually helping them too. It all ends with the Borg coming as close to a "thank you" as may be possible, leaving you with "you will not be assimilated."

Yeah i have seen that labelled at the JF, i don't know why, i put it down to those who were shouting about the ship looked horrible and they would not bother doing the event to get it, and now the reality is it is a op ship thst damages and team heals at the same time, and they now have to pay to get it...........hence why these days have the chat window closed most of the time, which is a shame because it is only a loud minority that whing and moan in this game about everything, be it the ship other player dare to use without asking permission first, or you don't treat a pug tfo like it is a military simulator, or dps gods who do random elites tfos and then for some reason instead of doing the tfo they sit at the side whinging about who is doing the least dps..........we can think ourselves lucky these player never got their wish of a tfo team vote kick.

I have to say I don't really have that same problem. Although I generally stay out of the Elites and as far away from the DPS cult as possible.

I have seen the JF be an AFK machine. You can cheese the system with it. Usually the game will auto-kick you for AFK after awhile but the JF will do enough on its own in it's jellyfish mode to trick the game into thinking the player is doing something. So you can park it somewhere where enemies will spawn, pop the mode and walk away.

I personally don't care... although again I don't normally do Elite's. Advanced are usually challenging enough without having to risk outright fail conditions, so even if someone does AFK it's not usually that big of a deal.

My biggest with the game nowadays is the ridiculous overreliance on the gamble boxes. There are plenty of things I want in this game, that I would buy, but they don't let me. I'm not going to buy a chance to get the thing. I'll buy the thing, but it's not an option. It's gotten so ridiculous to the point that ANYTHING actually shown on screen is box-gated. Maybe occasionally they are a generous god and toss some shitty kitbashed Wolf 359 ships you can buy in the c-store.

I do like that KDF T6 Dyson ship, though. Been hankering for a new KDF ship for a bit. I bought the Lego D7 and that has been my kind of forever-ship.

I hope you are doing the yearly campaign, as this year you get the 1500 lobi, the 2 T6 zen store tokens and the 1 elite T6 ship token, works out as 1 T6 lock box ship, 2 lobi store ships, and 2 T6 zen store ships.....great rewards this year. :-)

Will the Kelvin timeline constitution II Intel cruiser be available as an elite T6 option in this year's campaign? I really wouldn't mind adding that TOS Kelvin captain's ship roster.

No not for this year's campaign because it made it's debut in April of 2024. The cutoff date for any campaign is December of the previous year, so for this 2024 campaign, it's any ship that debuted prior to January of 2024.

So yeah it'll be available as a choice for the 2025 campaign if they continue with the tradition of doing it yearly as they have for the last 3 years.

Yeah kinda crazy they're giving EVERYTHING.

Not sure what my Promo ship will be yet, will probably use the Lobi for items rather than ships, and i'll probably grab the Fed and KDF Dyson ships with the T6 coupons. If the Borg Assimilator is available for it, I might get that. Otherwise, maybe the Excelsior II or Connie III. A part of me wants to get La Sirena just because you never see them. Or the World Razer, that could be a solid option too.

I aslo play STO (spacetravellerx is my name if anyone needs more friends in STO)

I've been playing as a TOS Andorian, a Romulan, a Klingon & a Jem'Hadar

I wish Cardassians and Ferengi were playable factions though

Next story update coming next week
