Give me some reasons to like Nero.

For a psychotic, vengeful villian, his speech over the comm is pretty damned laid back.

"Hi Christopher, I'm Nero..."

Nero wasn't as good as the Joker in the last Batman movie, but God, who is? The Joker made that movie, take out the Joker and the whole movie would've been a giant snooze fest.

Nero was just right. I went to see Spock and Kirk and that's what I got.
In Nero's defense, the Joker got about ten times more screen time.

Also, speaking of the Joker, no one questions his motivations. I wonder how far we'd get in that investigation. (I didn't really like Dark Knight all that much, but it wasn't the Joker's motivations that bugged me but his Rube Goldberg Machine plots that still worked. At least Nero's plans are straightforward and plausibly executed: "1)steal Spock's black hole weapon; 2)maroon Spock; 3)make him watch me destroy shit he cares about".)

I'll echo the "Hi, Christopher" line was great. I almost wonder if it was scripted or something Bana just ad libbed as a joke and they decided to leave it in because it worked.

Nero loved his family very much.

Yes, he did; reading "Countdown" ahead of time did help. It has his family in it and his rationale. Most people don't need any more than just a villain, but if you do -- I would suggest getting the trade paperback of the comics.

"Hi Christopher, I'm Nero."

I think that says it all.
I loved that. For some reason, he really reminded me of Bill Murray in Ghostbusters.

And another reason to love Nero is the Narada. Eric Bana loved "his" set. He said "my set went on forever!" It was apparently huge. He felt rather posessive of it, it sounds like. They did a great job on it. It was a mining ship, and had that same kind of gravitas as one of those big Caterpillar mining outfits.

I loved Eric Bana since "Troy." He's a great talent.

agreed! I loved his Henry VIII in The Other Boleyn Girl. best thing in that movie.

"Hi Christopher, I'm Nero."

Seconded. He had a way of making the silliest things look cool. His attitude was so non-cliche-villain-like I fell in love with him that very moment. No tedious, melodramatic, over-the-top monologues and megalomania. No "mwahaha, I'll expose you to my nefarious plan while using as many adjectives as possible to make me look good".

That being said....

AAARGH!

And then people accuse me of dragging Khan into the discussion. That's exactly what I meant: they're both sort of the same, yet some people like one and not the other.... like me. I like Nero. :D

He's cool, he's got a cool attitude, he wears cool clothes, and he's cute. He's good enough to move the plot forward. Sure, I'd like to see more of him, but I'm happy with what I got.

exactly. I can see the fact that his wife must have been crazy about him. and vice versa. I can see that loss as his primary and only motivator.

sometimes, you only need a simple reason for a big problem.

I would have liked him, had he not indulged in genocide.

All he had to do was fix Romulus's problem. There was no reason to murder six million Vulcans. Had he not been stopped, he would had wiped out Earth and all of the other Federation worlds that he could.

So he lost any sympathy I might have had for him. And it was only fitting that had he survived, the world he knew would have been changed.

Well, you guys didn't sell me :(

In fact the most common reason given that I should think he's a decently written villain is: "Hi, Christopher. I'm Nero." That's pretty sad, guys. You know it too.

I'll try and enjoy it more on the second watch, if I can... but anyone saying this movie is "excellent" is obviously too forgiving on what is clearly bad writing.

I liked him because he wasn't a traditional maniacal bad-guy-at-heart bad guy. He just seemed liked an average guy who went off the deep end. I kinda wished that they left more of his material in the movie as that may have helped fill him out, but what they did do with him gave him a very unique feel as far as bad guys go.

Better then if he were the standard 'plotting' Romulan.

But the plotting Romulan at least has a clear motive and reasoning behind his scheming. :(

They should have made Nero psychotic. At least give him a twitch or something. Even Lore had a good crazy-twitch.

Sorry! Sorry! Gotta think Positive!

Nero was good cause........ cause....... uh....
He was already Psychotic... He was down right Homocidal, Genocidal... He wasssss NERO...

Instead of changing the future by letting the Romulans study the tech on the Narda (SP) He goes out hunting Vulcans. He's tits to the wall mad. Fruity as a nutcake. He's off his bleeding rocker and that's what made him fun.

That's what made this movie fun.

The message of this movie for those of you who missed it. "Emotions can be your worst enemy but to deny them and surpress them (As Spock did) can also lead to your destruction, and it almost did. He almost killed Kirk, Nero's emotions took over, he didn't keep them in check and he became Obsessed with the death of the federation, and failing that, killing Spock even if it meant destroying his own ship.

Tits to the wall mad I tell you.

I thought Nero looked cool that is why I have had the same avatar fro over 9 months. :)

Ah, but the Joker is clearly crazy. The constant licking, the weird scars, the overexaggerated movements, the random violence... The problem with Nero is that people say he's crazy, but they base it entirely on the fact that his plan is ridiculous. Nero seems pretty in control; he doesn't off his crewmembers randomly, he doesn't seem to delight in torturing Robau or Pike, and his general demeanour only changes twice, over the course of the whole film. If Nero is crazy, he's the most stable, most level-headed crazy person I've ever seen.

I'm the only person on this planet who loved Ang Lee's Hulk and Bana is a huge reason why.

As for a good reason to like Nero. His pointy ears are simply smashing. :vulcan:

'nuff said.

but he wasn't for us to like!

I don't think he means "like" as in "would like to hang out with" but to enjoy as a villain. He was just kind of there. He destroyed all of Vulcan and tried to destroy earth, yet I really didn't get any satisfaction with his death.

I've stated in another thread that I found the main villain's rationale for attacking Vulcan and Earth to be utterly ridiculous, bad writing in general.

Buuut there was enough of the movie that I enjoyed, so I plan on seeing it again with a more "positive" mindset.

Give me some reasons why you thought Nero was anything resembling a decently written character, and I'll try and take it into account for my next viewing.

I hear he is a smoking good poker player. ;)

What I really want to know is who the heck chewed his ear off?
