Writers: Expect 'Star Trek XII' In 2012 By Alan Stanley Blair
J.J. Abrams' 2009 blockbuster certainly re-invigorated what many believed to be a dying franchise, and now it seems that a direct sequel to his take on "Star Trek" is just a year or so away.
Despite the Internet rumors, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who also co-wrote the first movie in the rebooted series, have confirmed that there will be no "Star Trek XII" hitting theaters in 2011, but there is a very good chance there will only be an additional year to wait.
We think it’s going to be a 2012 release, but I’m not sure,
Orci confirmed at the Screenwriting Expo in Los Angeles. Kurtzman, his long-term partner in crime, confirmed the expectations and also revealed their own timetable for delivering a script.
Originally we thought we were going to have to have the script in by Christmas,
he explained.
But the release changed, so certainly within the next eight months I’d say.
Why the delay when the first one was such a hit? Well, both Orci and Kurtzman want to make sure that the next one is every bit as successful as the last one … and they have no intention of splitting their idea into two movies.
It's very, very important to us to make sure that each movie is good, not, 'Hey, let's do as many as possible,'
Kurtzman said.
We feel like we've inherited this incredible honor and this mantle of Star Trek, and the most important thing is to make sure that we're protecting that first. So, if the studio wants more than one, great.
Their thinking, however, is that they need to focus on the story, and if the story dictates there should be a series of films about it, great. Otherwise, nothing else should play into the decision.
Part of what is great about Star Trek is that it's a continuing adventure, so you naturally think that there will be many, hopefully, but we only focus on what comes next, and then build off of that,
Kurtzman said.
Right now, we're not thinking specifically about making [12] and [13]. It may come up, but it's not where our heads are at right now.
The announcement that there will be a delay in the development of the new movie has been met with a mixed response from many fans. Many are thrilled that the project is being taken so seriously and are building up high hopes for the second movie while others are somewhat disappointed.
But the real question on everyone's lips though is whether the sequel feature a certain genetically enhanced human from the 21st century?
