Abrams: Star Trek Sequel Will Not Be ‘Remake’ – But Khan Still A Possibility by TrekMovie.com Staff
The Star Trek sequel continues to be in the early stages and according to JJ Abrams, the notion of bringing back Khan is still possible. In a new interview snippet at MTV, the producer and possible director of the sequel talks about the possibility of recasting Trek’s ultimate villain.

Khan 2.0?
In an interview with MTV, JJ Abrams noted one of the advantage of the new universe timeline that was set up in the first film, and notes that finding a new Khan is no different than recasting the main crew:
Now that we are in a parallel existence with what fans of the original series love so much, we could introduce any number of characters, settings, references and situations that the original series introduced. Dealing with Khan would certainly be a challenge, but we had an equal challenge in finding our crew of the Enterprise.
It should be noted that Abrams was not saying Khan is in the movie, just pointing out that it is still possible, he went into more detail, saying
While I don’t want to approach the second film as a remake of episodes we’ve seen in the past. I don’t think any of the writers or producers are interested in just rehashing or throwing characters for the sake of it, and Khan is certainly the most obvious one in the history of the series for me, I do think that…nothing is off limits in terms of what we’re discussing. When Bob Orci and the others who know ‘Trek’ so well, when we are discussing stories, the fun of working with them is they know this universe so deeply they’re the ones who are always considering what it means to deal with the stuff in the past, so it’ll be exciting.

Chronicles Network Science Fiction & Fantasy posted the following rumor this morning at their website :

It is probably one of the worst kept secrets in science fiction film history, but finally news is coming out from the JJ Abrams camp that Captain Kirk or how he is also known as, William Shatner, will be appearing in Star Trek 2.

The director has made it no secret that he wanted William Shatner on board with the next film, one thing that highlighted the interest of both parties was when Kirk picked up the award for Star Trek at the Scream 2009 awards.

There could never have been a bigger indication that things are rolling, in fact, it seems that JJ is planning to meet with Bill to discuss how things can progress.

Of course, there is one thing talking about it and another actually putting into practice, if the part is right then yes it could happen.
The original report can be found here (www.sffchronicles.co.uk).

So there's the first news posts!

PS

Here is a link to a news article about the actor who played Pike and the possibility of him reappearing in the next film from a sister website "Room for Greenwood in Star Trek XII" Trek Today

I think it is great to get Shatner involved.

Writers: Expect 'Star Trek XII' In 2012 By Alan Stanley Blair

J.J. Abrams' 2009 blockbuster certainly re-invigorated what many believed to be a dying franchise, and now it seems that a direct sequel to his take on "Star Trek" is just a year or so away.

Despite the Internet rumors, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who also co-wrote the first movie in the rebooted series, have confirmed that there will be no "Star Trek XII" hitting theaters in 2011, but there is a very good chance there will only be an additional year to wait.

We think it’s going to be a 2012 release, but I’m not sure,
Orci confirmed at the Screenwriting Expo in Los Angeles. Kurtzman, his long-term partner in crime, confirmed the expectations and also revealed their own timetable for delivering a script.

Originally we thought we were going to have to have the script in by Christmas,
he explained.
But the release changed, so certainly within the next eight months I’d say.

Why the delay when the first one was such a hit? Well, both Orci and Kurtzman want to make sure that the next one is every bit as successful as the last one … and they have no intention of splitting their idea into two movies.

It's very, very important to us to make sure that each movie is good, not, 'Hey, let's do as many as possible,'
Kurtzman said.
We feel like we've inherited this incredible honor and this mantle of Star Trek, and the most important thing is to make sure that we're protecting that first. So, if the studio wants more than one, great.

Their thinking, however, is that they need to focus on the story, and if the story dictates there should be a series of films about it, great. Otherwise, nothing else should play into the decision.

Part of what is great about Star Trek is that it's a continuing adventure, so you naturally think that there will be many, hopefully, but we only focus on what comes next, and then build off of that,
Kurtzman said.
Right now, we're not thinking specifically about making [12] and [13]. It may come up, but it's not where our heads are at right now.

The announcement that there will be a delay in the development of the new movie has been met with a mixed response from many fans. Many are thrilled that the project is being taken so seriously and are building up high hopes for the second movie while others are somewhat disappointed.

But the real question on everyone's lips though is whether the sequel feature a certain genetically enhanced human from the 21st century?

The original post can be found here.
That's what I have today (Oct.11,09), I hope there will be more to post tomorrow (Oct.12,09).

So I have no update today, and I suspect that I won't have any for at least a week, I will of course be checking everyday at all of my many websites though if I see any news on any of Star Trek XI's actors or any speculation by them about XII I will post it here for you to see. As a side note I will check out the next issue of the Star Trek magazine when it comes out which is an issue on Star Trek's various villains but from what I have read I suspect there will be no news in that issue regarding XII yet; I'll keep checking each issue though.

If you see something relevant to this thread feel free to post it here, it would be appreciated by everyone.:techman:

Till then

Crave Online posted an interview conducted by Fred Topel of Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci today (Roberto? I always thought it was just Robert), its got lost of questions about many of their films including Star Trek (XI) and some questions about Star Trek XII but nothing new was really stated.

You can read the interview here.

From the interview I posted in another thread minutes ago, from TrekMovie.com, November 16, 2009.

Exclusive Interview: JJ Abrams Talks Allegories, Design, and Release Date For Star Trek Sequel by Anthony Pascale
TrekMovie: You [and the writers] Bob [Orci] and Alex [Kurtzman] have talked about how you would want to go deeper in the Star Trek sequel, telling an allegorical story like old-school Star Trek. Are you envisioning the next film to have a message, like Star Trek IV had with ’save the whales?

J.J. Abrams: It is too early to talk about what the next movie will be or what we are imagining, since we are just getting started. But, I would say that because the first film was about these characters coming together and meeting, there is an inherently more immediate and, in a way, naive quality to that kind of an origin story. I think the key to Star Trek moving forward is that it retain the sense of adventure and fun and excitement, and at the same time, go a little bit deeper. Now that these people know each other, just like any friendships you have, the first month of knowing that person is not going to be the same thing as the first year, or the fifth year or tenth year. No one wants a movie that is a ‘preachy’ film. No one wants a movie that feels like it is moralizing and some manifesto, but I feel like it has to go a little deeper. I don’t think that is something you can really argue.
[...]
TrekMovie: Originally Variety reported the plan for the sequel to be a 2011 movie, now Bob and Alex have talked about it maybe being a 2012 movie. You have a million projects going on right now, what is your best guess as to when you think the Star Trek sequel will be released?

J.J. Abrams: I believe the next Star Trek film will be in 2012.
[...]
TrekMovie: Do you, or the studio, have a preference for Summer or Winter?

J.J. Abrams: I don’t. My instinct is that the studio wanted to take Star Trek, which was a winter film and move it to the summer.
[...]
The whole interview which includes comments on the whole use of Budweiser Brewery and the power plant can be read here.

JJ Abrams is exactly who I thought he was from the fact that I heard he had been so careful with making XI and who along with Orci and Kertzman were listening to the criticisms of the film. I had expected a more in depth film in XII and it sounds like JJ wants to give us exactly that, I believe that by XII all the Trekkies and fans will be united in liking the next film when it premiers, now in 2012. Also before I had my doubts about Shatner being in or even belonging in XII but if they are careful and execute it correctly Shatner coming back one last time in XII could be a very memorable moment, in a positive way too, and hopefully a great send off for the first captain James T. Kirk. Star Trek looks from this interview to have a bright future.

If you didn't read the post at my other thread from the 15th I will put it here as well.

Unfortunately it's an almost universal constant that you can't please everyone. Some fans already have decided they will not like Trek XII, here and now - nevermind even waiting to see the damn thing. I'm sure some fans have a JJ Abrams dart board or a JJ Abrams punching bag. It wouldn't matter if Trek XII ends up being a better movie than Citizen Kane, some people will hate it. For some it will be a matter of principle (in their minds, whether consciously or unconsciously), for others the style or substance just wont suit them. For some it will be because the ships aren't quite the right shade of grey or because of a leading zero...

Leonard Nimoy Doesn't Think He'll Return for Star Trek 2 (author not posted yet) November 18th, 2009
[...]
"I am very happy with the direction J.J. took this particular film. He has a great cast, and he's in great shape. I was fortunate enough to work with an exceptional group of actors, and the fans really seemed to enjoy the film." He continued by telling us, "I don't think there is room for me to return in a sequel. I don't think they need me. I am happy to see Zachary continue on with the role. I don't believe a second film would benefit from me being a part of it. If J.J. asked me to come back, I would consider it. But I don't think it is necessary, nor do I think that is part of J.J.'s plan."

Zoe Saldana Dishes on Star Trek 2 and Avatar (author not listed) November 18th, 2009
"Yeah, it's quite a love triangle," Saldana said. "I'm not really sure where that relationship will go in the sequel, but it will be fun to explore."
Saldana also spoke out about getting into some more of the action pieces in the sequel as well.

Bruce Greenwood Isn't Sure If He'll Appear in Star Trek 2 (author not listed) November 18th, 2009
"I know they're writing the film right now, but I'm not sure if we'll see Pike or not," Greenwood said. "He was mainly there to bring Kirk aboard the Enterprise and it's hard to say if he'll be popping up in the sequel."
Greenwood also spoke about his history with the series and what he learned from his predecessors who played Captain Pike in the past.
"I did go back and look at Jeffrey Hunter's performance in the original series,"
Greenwood said about his preperation for the role.
"This is obviously a very different kind of Star Trek, but it was nice to see the history of the character unfold."
Keep an eye out for our video interviews with Greenwood and many more in the coming days.

Exclusive Video Interview: JJ Abrams Talks Star Trek Sequel November 18, 2009
Everyone wants to know what is going to happen in the Star Trek sequel. At the Star Trek DVD/Blu-ray launch party TrekMovie had a moment to talk to JJ Abrams. The producer talked about the status of the project, what he will do to boost international sales, if he will direct it, and yes, Khan, and more. See below for video.

Rumor Control: Nestor Carbonell NOT Being Eyed For Khan In Star Trek Sequel November 18, 2009
[...]
The new wrinkle this week seems to have been kicked off by ComingSoon, which stated JJ Abrams and the Star Trek team "already have a favorite" to take over the role made famous by the late Ricardo Montalban. Coming Soon says that the team are looking at Nestor Carbonell, who plays Richard Alpert on JJ Abrams’ and Damon Lindelof’s Lost. Many other sites are now running with this rumor.

However, multiple sources have confirmed with TrekMovie that there has been no change on the decision regarding Khan. And for this week’s rumors, a trusted source tells TrekMovie that discussions of Carbonell being on some sort of short list is "total BS." Sources do confirm that Khan is still a possibility for the film, but that is not anything new.

I haven't been able to access the front page on TrekToday for some reason but I used the link in the news section here at TrekBBS to a story there where they talk to Orci about Khan where he says nothing definitive, but TrekToday repeats the rumor. If you missed it or are having troubles with the front page the link to TrekToday's news posts is here.

A good comment from Orci about Khan at http://www.newsarama.com/film/091118-Roberto-Orci-Star-Trek.html

Nrama: Sooo, are we admitting anything about Khan yet...?

Orci: [shakes head] Cause in a way, even if we do Khan, or not, we're trying to approach the story as just what's best for it, and then can that character become Khan or not, you know. You're not trying to rely on previous knowledge or love of it, so you almost want to strip all the names away and just come up with the emotional forces and the scientific forces that are going to come into play, and then start letting the details kind of bleed in.

No doubt, but hopefully they'll keep us interested, and put out more news on the progress from right now in the writing stage, to news of a finished script, though the wait for them to start filming we be longer I bet hopefully they'll have started preproduction by February and in the summer actual production.
