News Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire anticipation thread

Yeah, a lot of people have complained about that, along with Janine's character development getting gutted because the execs didn't like having a well developed female character. :p In my experience, the eps with good writing have generally aged well.

I was recently looking at an interesting gallery of unused concept art for the 2016 movie, and someone was pointing out how strange it was for the suits to seemingly reject a lot of interesting concepts, including the idea that ghosts would be pulled from other dimensions into New York (so they would seem quite different from Earthly ghosts). One of the more oddball concepts was that they originally wanted a scarier version of Slimer, who would initially be a regular human ghost that got warped into his green form during the first test of the equipment. Not sure what I think about that idea.

Just more evidence the EPA was right to shut them down. As if running around town with unlicensed nuclear accelerators strapped to their back wasn't enough.

Yeah.. I have fond memories of TRG as a teen, but as an adult, it just doesn't hold up, especially the later seasons where Slimer was the focus.
I haven't watched the show in many years but I do remember even as a kid, I didn't like how the show became more focused on Slimer in the later seasons. I was never a big fan of the character...aside from that one episode where he explored the inside of the ecto-containment unit (which may or may have not be during that period).

I keep meaning to go back and watch again because I had such fond memories of it and didn't know until years later that JMS had worked on the show, but I do worry that it hasn't aged well in certain aspects.
I think the show holds up for what it was, at least the early seasons . . . the good ones anyway. Hey it was one of those "you gotta make 60 episodes in a year" type orders, so there was a lot of filler nonsense, but there's still plenty of gems in the mix (and yes, a lot of those were the JMS ones.) I mean it's not 'Batman: the Animated Series', but for it's time it holds up better than most.

I'm honestly not sure if the later stuff ever even made it onto TV over here at all since I've seen clips & images of them on the internet over the years, and none of it rings any bells. I wouldn't be shocked if CITV just bought the first couple seasons and called it a day. That's still 70-odd episodes, which is more then enough to run weekly for a year and change, not counting repeats.

For those that want to take a look for themselves; the official youtube channel has a bunch of full length episodes up and available to watch (legally) for free. I think they actually have them all uploaded, but delist & cycle them through periodically. So if there's a particular one you want to see again, it'll probably come up eventually.

Have you went back and rewatched the Real Ghostbusters on Prime? It’s not that good. It’s not bad. But it’s not great. Much worse as an adult than as a kid. And maybe the Ghostbusters guys didn’t even remember JMS had worked on the cartoon.
I watched some of the first season while back while it was up and Netflix, and I thought it was OK. I enjoyed it, but it was nowhere near as good as Batman:TAS or Gargoyles, which are pretty much the gold standard of pre-'00s animated shows for me.

A lot of shows still hold up if you only count the good episodes. ;)
True enough. But when it comes to something like this where a show is produced en masse, on a short schedule and a tight budget, and primarily as a means to sell merchandise; one must bare in mind the context. Compared to similar shows that preceded it, I think it does much better overall in terms of longevity.
Indeed with this kind of thing; if they managed to get even a handful of good stories out of it, it's an achievement!

Like I said though, it's not up to the level of something like BTAS, but very few shows of the era are. Western 80's cartoons are a very different breed from 90's & 00's.

The first few seasons are excellent. It really pulls a lot of mythology from different sources and makes it work as part of the Gostbusters world.

So they were fans of it but didn't know who wrote it? The writers from here went onto Batman TAS, Babylon 5, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles etc.

My controversial opinion is that Walter Peck isn't quite the bad guy he's made out to be. I mean shutting down the containment field is a dick move, being concerned about what the Ghostbusters are actually doing on the other hand is perfectly acceptable!

...Most people don't know who writes tv shows or movies, especially kids watching cartoons...

Oh sure. I just think the people who actually make Ghostbuster movies and mention that they were inspired by the animated series would know.

Ah I thought you were referring to the person you quoted being a fan and not knowing who wrote

Not all that controversial given it was the Regan years and deregulation was all the rage, so of course the EPA would be cast as a mindless bureaucratic roadblock to the successful independent entrepreneurs! Fussy government overreach, always telling people where they can't dump their toxic waste! ;)

Peck wasn't meant to really be a villain anyway though; just an impediment to propel them into the third act.
Still, right or wrong he was an uptight arsehole, and cutting power to a possibly hazardous device he has no idea what it even was doing, let alone how it works was enormously irresponsible, even if the engineer he brought on site didn't explicitly raise safety concerns. Seriously, what if they'd built an ad-hoc miniaturised fission reactor in that basement and he'd just shut off the coolant pump? Idiot.

Dark Horse just announced they'll do a tie-in comic set between Afterlife and Frozen Empire:

DARK HORSE PRH
DEC230991
DEC230992 – GHOSTBUSTERS BACK IN TOWN #1 CVR B LAMBERT
(W) Greg Pak, David M. Booher (A) Blue Delliquanti (CA) Steve Morris
A year and a half after the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ghostbusters are officially back in business and headed to where it all began: New York City! Callie, Gary, Trevor, and Phoebe are moving into the Firehouse and ready to take on the Spengler family business… or are they? Ghostbusting on top of changing family dynamics has a way of going awry-and that's exactly what one paranormal force is counting on. See what the Big Apple has in store for the latest generation of Ghostbusters with the first installment of an all-new series that bridges the gap between Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the upcoming sequel!

Exactly, the whole point of making something part of a franchise is actually acknowledging that the thing is part of the franchise. And I can see where a movie that is reviving an old franchise is especially going to want to include a lot of references and callbacks. I thought Afterlife did good of giving us enough new stuff that it wasn't totally overwhelmed by the references and callbacks.

The fact that it was a continuation was a huge plus for me. And the different location was refreshing and allowed the story to flow in intriguing ways without being hamstrung by NYC as a location. In fact, I don't think it would have worked nearly as well if it was set in NYC ironically enough.

(And back in the day if you didn't see something you didn't see it).

Tell me about it. I'd heard of many cartoons back when I was growing up in the 80's and 90's, but never seen them, due to the simple fact of syndication making them available only in certain markets.
